View Full Version : Random Questions/Observations/Computer Problems

I thought a catch-all thread for quick questions or observations might be a good idea. There have been times when I just wanted to ask a quick question or make an observation, but didn't want to start a thread.

My question is, I bought a new DVD/VCR Player. For some crazy reason, only one videotape works. If use any other tape, it just tapes a mess. I bought new tapes, but only that one tape works, and it doesn't have a brand name written on it, so it's not like I can buy that brand. I'm wondering if it's the player itself, the settings or whatever.

My observation is this. Am I the only person who is grossed out when someone blows their candles out on a birthday cake? I don't like to eat food that someone has just blown their breath (or worse), all over it.

This is a great idea for a thread Janice!!! There have also been times where I've wanted to ask a computer question, or bring up some silly thing, but didn't want to start a whole new thread on it. I think a whole thread dedicated to those kinds of questions and observations, is perfect. Thanks for starting it!! :D

As far as your observation goes, you know what, I never even thought about it. Now that you brought it up though, you're right, that is pretty nasty. LOL!!

Regarding the candle thing... Oh, Janice. I have to say this, you're making too much out of it. BUT, I respect that. I've never really been grossed out by that thought - but then, I don't eat birthday cake that often.

I do have an observation, though. This one grosses me out AND pisses me off. I get really grossed out when somebody is in a public bathroom, and they flush the toilet with their foot. UGH - would you flush your own toilet at home with your foot?? Then WHY are you flushing a public toilet with your foot?? You have no idea what kind of germs and bacteria are lurking on your shoes. All kinds of urine and feces, food, dirt, gum, etc. But MOST ESPECIALLY urine, because you KNOW there are idiots who hover over the toilet (another thing that pisses me off) AND they always manage to get urine on the floor. NASTY. This also makes NO SENSE to me, because if you are a hygienic person, you will flush the toilet WITH YOUR HAND and then you will come out AND wash your hands right afterwards. You are just putting more gross bacteria on the toilet handle for the other people going in after you.

Could be, but think about this. Would you take a plate of food and ask someone to blow all over it with all their might before you eat it? It's not so bad usually, but when you've got a kid with the sniffles or your Aunt Bertha, who's 85 and drools to begin with...it's just something that has always struck me as nasty. :barf:

I always buy the single candle or two at the most. If they're 13, I buy the 1 and the 3. Lowers the spit spray factor, lol.

There have also been times where I've wanted to ask a computer question
That's right Brad. Computer questions or problems fit nicely on this thread, which leads me to this....

For the last several months, I can't save a pic or cartoon as a jpeg file The only option is to save it as a bitmap file. The dropdown feature doesn't work. I've figured out how to convert it from bitmap to jpeg, but it's a pain. I have to save it as a bitmap, then go to my AOL Picture Finder...put in an e:mail, then it will save as jpeg. It's not a big deal, just more of an annoyance than anything. For no reason at all, it just happened one day.

You say that when it records onto other tapes it's a mess. Have you played any commercial tapes or others that you may have recorded on another VCR to see if they will play in the new one?

If you have and there's no problems then more than likely the unit is defective because this doesn't sound right at all. Does the unit have automatic tracking? If it does, Try it manually and see what happens.

If you just bought it recently, The place you got it from will most likely exchange it or give you refund. I've gone thru several VCR's in my lifetime but don't recall ever having this type of problem. If you have a head cleaning tape, You might want to try that if you haven't already done so. I can't see the problem being in the tapes especially since you've tried recording on more than one.

 So true, though! And I can see where you're coming from with that. Oh, and with the candle thing... YES, YES, YES! You don't have to put in as many candles and don't have to spend all that time lighting up candles. :)

Oh, and re: the pictures, that's easily solved. Clear out your internet cache. If you're using Firefox, it's Tools > Options > Cache tab > Clear Cache Now button. If you're in IE, it's Tools > Internet Options > General tab > Browsing history area > Delete button > Temporary Internet Files > Delete files... button.

Just close out of your browser after that and then you can open Firefox or IE again, and everything should be good to go. :)

Haha! Great thread, Janice!

I also have never really thought about the birthday candle observation either, but it does sound a little nasty now thinking about it. What's worse is when a child blows out their cake and blows too hard where they spit on it. *cringes*

My observation - well, it's more of a personal thing - I never grab the first magazine or newspaper from newstands/magazine racks. I have always been picky about that. When there's a stack, I always like to get a fresh, new, untouched copy by digging from the middle of the stack and away from the top where people placed their dirty hands and fingers all over it. I actually have never really thought deeply about this with myself up until recently.

the title of tv guide's "look-a-like" thing pisses me the hell off. "alike" is one unhyphenated word. it should be "look-alike". i've been tempted to add their myspace page just so i can comment and tell them that.

I will not eat cake that has been contaminated, which is what blowing on it does. I think its rude.

Someone will flush after you and who knows where your foot may have been. It's also alot easier to wash your hands than cleaning your shoes. One things for sure, All restrooms especially public ones are full of bacteria and germs. Here's another one you might not have thought of. What about the faucet? I doubt that anyone cleans it after washing their hands so their germs are left on it for the next person.

Basically, the toilet flushing comes down to protecting your personal health vs. protecting that of others. Personally I prefer the ones that flush automatically (see below, though) - but otherwise I'll just flush via the hand, and wash my hands.
---
That said: Why does it seem like, with the automatic flushers, they only flush when you sit on them - I can't speak for anyone else, but the one time this has happened to me, I was just a bit...disturbed.

Um. Don't you two ladies wash your hands RIGHT AFTERWARDS? You could always take a wad of TP, hold it in your hand when you flush the toilet, ditch the TP in the flushing toilet and wash yer hands.

That's the thing I just don't understand. Your hands are _ALREADY_ DIRTY when you go in to do your thing (OMG HAY THE STALL LATCH HAS GERMS ON IT TOO), so the "adding germs to your hand" concept is pointless.

And, THANK YOU, Zoneboy. You ACTUALLY understand. :)

Glad to help. :) I ran into that problem years ago myself. It's one of these weird but common problems with no obvious solution (i.e. your hard drive is full; delete things to free up space, and empty recycle bin too).

You should be clearing out yer temporary internet files on a semi-regular basis anyway -- maybe once every month or two -- just to help keep things running smoothly.

Yes I wash my hands afterward, BUT I still don't want to touch anything that has other people fecal matter on it. When I unlock the door to the toilet I use tissue same when I lock it. After I wash my hands I'll open the door with paper towels. Having strangers pee and poop bacterial on my hands doesn't thrill me at all.

Yeah, but I know who's touched my toilet handle at home. I have no idea who or what has touched that public handle (hell, toilet splash from the flush could have gotten on it), so I'd rather my shoe touch it. I'm not touching my shoe with my hands, so my chance of germs is pretty nil. If you exclude the seat itself of course, but that's a whole different matter.

You need those self-flush toilets. I personally despise those, mostly because they seem to like to flush while I'm still sitting on it, but it sounds like your ideal toilet.

Does anyone know anything about salmon...is it good, what's the best way to cook it? We went grocery shopping, and when we got home, there was a pound of fresh salmon in one of our bags. We paid for it too. It evidently was from the person behind us in line, and somehow fell over that bar that separates the food. I called the store, and I can return it and get our money back, but the store is kind of far.

I'm wondering if I should just cook it. I've never had salmon before, and I only eat shellfish....lobster, crab, shrimp, scallops. I don't like strong tasting fish. I don't know what to do, but I have to do something fast, lol.

Last salmon I had was really salty, but it was frozen, not fresh. I think you can just bake it like you would any fish; at least mom baked ours. Check the web for some recipes. Gotta be some hints out there somewhere.

I think it's one of the less fishy-tasting fish. We buy it canned and it doesn't taste like fish at all to me.

That sounds good, and the foil pouch might contain the smell a bit, lol. For now though, I put it in the freezer. I'll probably end up tossing it a month from now.

YOU STILL HAVE THAT SALMON????? How abt giving it away?

My former husband used to bake the fish like that too, except he used aluminum foil. I will admit, it looked and smelled great, although I love my fish fried. I too love shellfish A LOT MORE.

My observation is this. Am I the only person who is grossed out when someone blows their candles out on a birthday cake? I don't like to eat food that someone has just blown their breath (or worse), all over it.
Saw this in today's paper, lol.

http://www.tmsfeatures.com/tmsfeatures/subcategory.jsp?custid=67&catid=1843 (http://www.tmsfeatures.com/tmsfeatures/subcategory.jsp?custid=67&catid=1843)

DEAR AMY: I'd like to respond to "Disgusted By This Tradition," the reader who was disgusted by the tradition of blowing out the candles.

I am a biologist, and while I agree that our society is germ-phobic, having someone blow on your food is just icky (yes, we use that term in the lab).

When kids blow out their candles, you can actually see the spit flying.

I simply think of the frosting as the "protective spit barrier" over the cake and scrape it off. Then I can enjoy the yummy spitless cake below. - Biologist From Long Island

DEAR BIOLOGIST: Many readers were similarly grossed out at the thought of blowing out birthday candles.

Thank you for providing us with the technical term for this behavior: icky.

Okay I'm taking advantage of the "computer problems" part of this thread.

I have a 30GB ipod video. I plugged it in and it updated everything like normal. Then a few minutes later it disconnected and reconnected on it's own. I didn't touch it. But it started to update it again...A message popped up and said that some of my files would not transfer to my ipod because the software was too old and to download the latest version. According to the little bar on the bottom, all of my videos were deleted from the ipod. And I couldn't download the latest version of the software because I do have the latest version, despite what it told me.

So then I disconnected it and reconnected it and this time it added all of my music and pictures, but only added my podcast videos. I disconnected it one more time and now when I reconnect it, it says the USB device is not recognized. I restarted my computer and it still says the same thing.

HELP.

I noticed that as well. I always see that the pilots have more laughter and is often funnier than other episodes. Those PR statistics.

I have a semi computer question. Well - not really - it's more a SO CP question. How come when I try to type in customized text right above my avatar, I get an error forcing me to add a year to my birthday? I thought it's an option. I don't want my year to show - only my birthdate. This is the error I get: You have entered an invalid birthday. I didn't know a birthday can be invalid! Well, that's why I always have the same text right above my avatar. How can I override this, mods?

A couple of questions:

1. What OS (operating system) are you using?
2. Do you have more than one USB? If so, try another one to see if it'll recognize it. Your USB appears to be losing its connection.

There _SHOULD_ be an option to hide your year. You DO have to set the full date of your birthday, though.

Control Panel > Edit Profile > Date of Birth > Hide Age and Date of Birth

This is what I see when I go there:

Date of Birth - August 16, 1985
Your date of birth and age are displayed in several places on the forum. Only the administrator will have access to your date of birth should you choose to hide it via the privacy option below.
Please contact the Administrator if your date of birth has changed.

Thanks! Yeah, I saw that option, but I was originally hesitant to apply the "hide age and date of birth." I originally thought that option meant that the mods wouldn't be able to see when my birthday is, but if mods can see it, then it's okay with me. I know it's a silly thing, but I like my birthday threads. :D

Are you talking abt making a pic smaller so you can make it your avatar?

I have pics that are waaaay larger than that 150x150 thingy, but it doesn't matter, the system automatically resizes it for me. I never have to adjust the size.

If you download the program Irfanview (totally free!), it's easy to resize pics to the exact dimensions you want without making it look weird or squished...you can do a few other things with the program too. I use it all the time :)

I've got a computer problem. I'm pretty sure my computer is infected with a virus. Norton Anti-Virus and Ad-aware disappeared from my desktop and programs list and Norton disappeared from the taskbar. This is what happened the last time I got a virus so it makes me think I have a virus again. The thing is, I can still run Norton and I did so but it doesn't detect anything so I don't know what to do about getting rid of the infection (the last time Norton detected it and quarantined the infected files). Also, on the Security and Scanning Features on Norton under Email Scanning the status is error (which is also what happened last time). The computer seems to be running ok but I'm pretty sure it's infected. Any suggestions?

Nothing happpens. I insert a CD or DVD to play, and nothing comes up. When I use my Sonic software to burn data to a blank disc, I put in a blank but the "E" drawer ejects the disc and says "Please insert a blank disc..."

When I got into the drive section of "My Computer," I click on the "E" icon and nothing pops up. When I click on "F." it says "Please insert a disc.." The "F" drive works.

I saw something on tv that I thought was odd. Last night on the 10pm local news the weather guy (he does the weather on the weekends) was wearing a black suit jacket, black suit pants, a white shirt with a collar and a pink tie. What I thought was strange looking was the color of the tie. I'm in no way a fashion expert, but I wouldn't think that color would go with the suit. Another color would have looked ok. I have to admit that pink looks a little odd on a guy, imo, no offense. I don't normally pay a lot of attention to what they wear, but that seemed to stand out.

Ok, for the life of me I can't recall what this kind of "poem" this is called. It was bugging me last night when the question came up. Let me post a sample and if anyone knows what kind of "poem" style this is, I'd appreciate it:

There was an old man from Peru
He dreamt he lived in a shoe
His pockets were bare
and he couldn't help but stare
as a dish ran away with a spoon

Anyone??????^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ see above

Also, how many posts does a thread here on S.O. take before it gets "full"? Is there a limit???

On the CC boards, 5000, I believe. On the other boards, it's 1000.

There's no actual limit, though. If you hit 5000 here, the thread won't abruptly stop. You just need to move on and make a new thread. :)

My computer keeps giving me a message that it's low on memory. When it happens, I can't do anything, but close it down, and then it works fine. It's happening more and more. I don't have a lot of windows open, and I haven't downloaded any new programs. I've done the virus testing and all that, cleaned up temp Internet files, etc.

Anyone?

It could be something in your Processes tab. First, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. When you do that, the Task Manager window pops up. Processes is the second tab from the left. A lot of the things running on your computer should generally stay in the hundreds - thousands range for memory usage (for example, 200 K or 4,000 K). There are some processes, such as Firefox (image name: firefox.exe), that eat up a lot of memory (right now, mine is running at 38,000 K). If you leave Firefox open and running for a long time, it can hit 256,000 K and then bog down your computer. To fix that, it's just a matter of closing Firefox completely and giving your computer a minute to recover.

Are there any other processes that are in the ten-thousand range or higher? If you can give us the names that are in the Image name column, that'd be great. Your problem is most likely a program that runs in the background, such as a virus scanner or instant messaging program.

I did that, and I didn't see anything with huge numbers. I don't even see Firefox. I wish I could copy and paste the list, but it won't let me. Do you think I should call Gateway...who would I call?

Any good recommendations on spyware removal software?

My home computer got badly hit with spyware two days ago, so I am really avoiding going online at home until I get it cleaned up well.

I tried running Ad-Aware SE, but the scan freezes up once it gets to a certain portion of the scan. For now, I am researching effective spyware removal software while I am at work. Any advice?

I use Spybot Search and destroy. It's wonderful for removing spyware.

Janice, it wouldn't hurt to give Gateway a shot. :)

That's weird that Firefox isn't there when you Ctrl + Alt + Delete. THAT'S the first I've heard of such a thing happening. Heh.

You'll need HijackThis if you haven't gotten it already. It'd help you remove the nasty **** that's there and causes Adaware to freeze up. Spybot is another good one too, but this sounds like this is a problem that won't be fixed simply by running these two progs.

To get better help with your spyware probs than what we can provide for you here, go to the SWI Forums http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ and post your HijackThis log in their Malware Removal forum (first board at top). Malware Removal is a VERY high-traffic forum, so it takes a few days to get help with your thread. But trust me, these guys are great. I've had a lot of computer probs in the past, and they always really helped. :)

That doesn't seem to catch anything but cookies for me. I have A-Squared and it catches more, but I'm sure not everything.

Man, it totally bites not being able to get online access at home! I'm at work for 9.5 hours today, so I can catch up. I was behind with PMs and emails in the first place, and now it's going to take even longer. Well...at least, I can slowly get my computer cleaned off.

on the results page, there should be a box to the left with the title "filter your friend search", where you can enter their zip code and a number of miles to search within that area.

This will sound silly, but it genuinely perplexes me. I don't know why French toast takes so long to cook. I have a good non-stick pan that holds four slices of bread. I use three eggs, a little milk, cinnamon, and I whip that real good. I melt butter in the pan, and when it's hot, I put the egg soaked bread in the pan. I use a medium flame, but often turn it up because it takes forever to brown. I don't understand why. I use thick bread. Maybe too much egg? I just cooked some now, and it took so long to get to a nice golden brown. The end result is worth it, but I just don't get why it takes so long, even with a medium high flame.

You know, I was reading just a few months ago abt cooking and heating, so forth. It said something to the effect of, the colder the items are that you are cooking, the longer it will take to cook. For example, if you are going to fry up frozen chicken nuggets or french fries, even though the pan and oil are extremely hot, the minute you put in something cold, the degrees go down significantly. It went on to say the similar thing happens when you pan fry or use a skillet to cook. The pan and/or oil or cooking spray are HOT but the minute you add food - especially cold food - the cooking will take longer.

One reason if you are going to bread something like chicken, you should always allow the milk and egg mixture to warm up a bit to room temperature OR after you bread it, allow the pieces to sit before sticking them in the pan or else it will take longer to cook, etc.

One reason my daughter hates to make French Toast is because of what you just posted above. She loves them, but she said it takes too long. How weird, I thought it was just her not wanting to make them.

^ Thanks, Irene. That's some good and helpful information you posted. It's nice to have someone take my post seriously, because it does take sooooo long for it to cook. The next time I make French toast, I'm going to let the egg and milk mixture get to room temperature. I made it today, so my husband can have it tomorrow morning, lol. These days, I am NOT a morning person. I set the table up, with the juice glass, syrup, coffee machine set up, etc. All he has to do is zap the French toast, and LET ME SLEEP. :sleep2:

I make omelettes the night before too. I use mushrooms, onion, broccoli, ham and sharp provolone cheese. I cook when I can. I have to take advantage of the spurts when I feel good. I'm sure you can relate, my friend. :) I hope you're feeling better. I know you recently had a bout of feeling bad.

It's weird how you mentioned this dilemna and here I had just heard abt that kind of cooking information. It came in handy for sure. If it works next time, post the results here. Either way, post the results. I am anxious to know how it came out.

Noooooo, you are not crazy, we are not crazy...NOT CRAZY, NOT CRAZY!!!! *stomping my feet*

The time it takes to make French Toast, you can read WAR AND PEACE.

Believe me, I sometimes want to ask a question here on the board and I wonder, "they will think I am crazy." But you never know, someone can either validate what you think or at least offer some humor. ;)

Mmmmm, those omelettes sound deeeeeeelicious. Makes me hungry for some. Whatever makes it easier for you to help you through your day, you just do it. I know how you feel. Laying in bed is sometimes the best thing for you, don't want to overdo it. Take care of yourself.

Lately, I have to re-enter my username and password for certain websites. My bank, Netflix, and a few other ones. I use AOL with Firefox if that matters. I've been going to these sites for years, and I've checked, "Remember Me" or whatever on all of them. Anyone else have this problem?

Janice

Is the cookies option enabled on your computer? That can cause problems if cookies aren't enabled. I've had that problem before where I would have to keep re-entering information even though I would have the 'remember me' box checked.
Thanks Jenny. Maybe that's it. Where do I locate that part?

Thanks Jenny. I called and was on the phone for an hour with a tech support person, in Argentina of all places, lol. She said it was cold today. I was surprised to hear that. As it turns out, the problem is with AOL. I have IE, and if I log on with that, there's no problems, but I really like AOL and have been using it since 1995. AOL doesn't offer live tech support because I have it for free. Do you know how to do the cookie thing with AOL? I know you have AOL too. Sorry to be a pain.

I just had to respond. I too have AOL. I have been using Internet Explorer for the last week to be on S.O. because on AOL it is so friggin' slow. I tried IE and it runs smooth here. I have no idea why only S.O. gives me a problem when I use AOL.

Thanks for trying, Jenny. That movie, dear God, it was so sad. It was very well-acted and a real tear-jerker. Thanks for the recommendation.

Irene, I guess I may have to do what you do, but the thing is that I love my AOL e-mail setup. I tried it with the IE AOL Welcome Page, and it just wasn't the same.

I hear you Janice. I know how you feel. I am so into AOL. I have my page set up the way I want and my emails, my favorites, etc. I can't see myself changing to anything else. So now, I have to use IE (for now) for S.O. and just go back and forth when I want to use AOL. It is not so frustrating, but it is more frustrating waiting for a page on S.O. to come up on AOL.

I have an observation.

Last week, every night around 2 in the morning, I received blocked phone calls, WAKING ME UP and putting me in a ****ty mood. The first time I got a call, I would say something along the lines of, "Hello?" and it'd be a group of girls giggling and not saying anything. So I'd hang up, only to get another call a minute later. This time I opened my phone and shut it, and tried to get back to sleep. After all, these calls did wake me up. Most nights, two phone calls would not be the end of it and the third time, I'd most likely pick up and be like, "What the **** is your problem? It's 2 in the ****ing morning, so unless you actually have something important to say, stop calling me at such a ridiculous hour." That isn't what really angered me, however. What angered me is that after saying that, one of the girls would say, "Can you be a little nicer?" UMM CAN I BE A LITTLE NICER WHEN YOU CALLED AND WOKE ME UP AT 2 IN THE MORNING, ON A BLOCKED NUMBER, JUST TO PISS ME OFF?

I think it's really rude when someone does something rude to anger someone else, the angry person yells, and then the instigator has the nerve to say, can you be a little nicer. **** NO.
