Comedian Jeni Dies In Apparent Suicide
By ANA BEATRIZ CHOLO

WEST HOLLYWOOD, California (March 11) - Richard Jeni, a standup comedian who played to sold-out crowds, was a regular on the "Tonight Show" and appeared in movies, died of a gunshot wound in an apparent suicide, police said Sunday.

Police found the 45-year-old comedian alive but gravely injured in a home when they responded to a call Saturday morning from Jeni's girlfriend, Los Angeles Police Officer Norma Eisenman said.

Eisenman said the caller told police: "My boyfriend shot himself in the face."

Jeni died at a nearby hospital.

Eisenman said suicide had not been officially confirmed and the investigation was continuing.

I thought the same thing too Cheryl. I've never seen this comic but it eerily sounded like our beloved Freddie. Freddie's the 1st person I thought of when I saw the news on Entertainment tonight this evening. Comics go through alot of highs and lows. Some more than others. I wonder if this comic was using drugs or alcohol?

Hi y'all!
Yeah this is so sad!:( I was shocked when I read about this because I used to watch him way back when. Richard Jeni was never a BIG star, but in the comedy circles, he was a name to know. He was a comic who could be funny without having to be too graphic or vulgar. Matter of fact, I had to stop watching Stand-up shows because the language has just got too bad for my taste. He was always good for a laugh though. From everything that I've been reading about him, he did NOT have any problems with drugs or alcohol. He was "sick" or "ill' as it has been put and there are rumors that he may have had an incurable condition. Rumors though! Nothing definite! It really is a shame that this had to happen and he will be missed.:rip:

I'm not really familiar with him but I wonder what made him do it. With Freddie we knew it was cuz he was heartbroken over his divorce...

The reason for this recent tragedy has been announced from Richard's family. They say that earlier he was diagnosed as clinically depressed with bouts of paranoia. It's very sad that this had to happen. :crying:
You know when you read about Richard and you know about Freddie, there are a lot of similarities between the two. Both grew up in rough neighborhoods in New York. Both seem to have kind of distant fathers. Both learned quickly that the best way for them to avoid trouble was to be funny. Both wrote their own material for their stand-up acts and worked tirelessly to perfect every routine. Both were very loving guys towards their families, even if they did have a reputation for being a lil difficult to work with at times. There are just many things that they seemed to have in common and its a real shame they both are not here to see what they meant to the people they touched.:(
