I was just reading the Monkees 'diary' book by Andrew Sandoval and found a few interesting things.

When the Monkees started recording Headquarters, Davy wasn't really a part of things. He was clinging to the Kirshner formula which IMO must've irritated the other three who were trying to go another direction. Of note is how much weak material (many unreleased recordings) was coming out of the Kirshner camp anyway so I think they were making a good move.

Also. the book mentions a radio promotion or something of the like where the Monkees were giving away copies of the second album (More of the Monkees). This was late '66 I believe. However, sometime in early '67, the story is repeated how they were surprised by a new album with them wearing their JC Penny clothes on the cover and had to go buy it for themselves. Im not saying its the fault of the author but this second story which has kind of become legend in Monkee-dom makes me wonder if it really is true or not.

The book sounds interesting. Did he interview any of them for the book?
