View Full Version : If UM is Revived, What Current Stories Should be First?
Thiussat 03-09-2007, 04:18 AM I have to say the obvious one would be Natalie Holloway, even though it has been beaten to death already.
I would also say the new "unabomber" copycat who calls himself "The Bishop."
Anna Nicole Smith might qualify (if the medical examiner's statements of late mean anything).
The college student boy who dissapeared from Purdue recently after attending a frat party. No trace of him, and his cell phone is missing.
How about the Lawyer guy who just dissapeared one day and has been supposedly spotted several times since...
I am at a loss for more, even though I am sure Nancy Grace and Greta have many more on their list that I am just forgetting.
This also begs the question... With the success of Greta and Nancy, is there room for UM? Don't the cable news networks already publicize missing persons enough? It seems like that's all they do after 8 P.M. Of course, missing persons and murders aren't the only topics for UM, but you know what I mean.
I just hope if it does come back that they don't hire some cheesy narrator. I hope it isn't a woman (no offense ladies). I just can't imagine the creepy factor being there with, say, Keelie Shay Smith doing the show. Or how about Clint Eastwood? He looks like Stack sorta and he would do well in a trenchcoat. ;) In all seriousness, my vote is for Bill Curtis.
Anyway, help me out with more cases...
The Flying Dutchmans 03-09-2007, 09:26 AM Well I think the girl who was out boating and then hit by a guy piloting anoher boat and she gets her face destroyed and then the guy looks at her for a minute and then takes off, the jacass, I think that one would qualify
Id like to see some updates on the ones who were caught, and see how they feel now that they are in jail, Id like to see how Charles Warren Boomer is doing, the Sachal bandit, and even how Rachel the girl he was with the one thats deaf is holding up. I fealt really bad for her
greatgarrett2 03-10-2007, 12:27 AM I would think some of the older ones that aren't solved. They could re-air them again and see if there might be any new leads......to start fresh. Re-look into the so-called Son of Sam case.......
Bazorro 03-10-2007, 12:12 PM Trenton Duckett would be a good missing persons one as well...
Tap Dancer 03-10-2007, 12:31 PM I'd like to see more unknown missing persons stories. There are so many missing people out there who never make it into the papers or on TV. They deserve to have their stories told.
crystaldawn 03-10-2007, 02:31 PM I think Jonathan Luna would be a very good one to be profiled. No real updates on this case but here is a recent article:

His death has to be one of most bizarre I've ever read about.

There are too many missing persons case that have received little, if any, national exposure. This includes both recent and old cases.
One that comes to mind is a case from my home state of Massachusetts, and it's one that I have mentioned before: Virginia Douglas. She was an elderly woman who has been missing since September of 1988. Her husband, Frank Douglas Sr., claimed that she disappeared from a shopping center in Belfast, Maine. But when the cops searched the couple's home in Lexington, Massachusetts, they discovered evidence that was inconsistent with Frank's story.
I've made no secret about my belief that it would have been an appropriate case for UM to feature. I still have no doubt about it.
boco357 03-10-2007, 04:16 PM Jacob Wetterling and Johnny Gosch cases.
West Memphis Three
Christa Worthington case
The Third Man 03-21-2007, 08:20 PM How about the Lawyer guy who just dissapeared one day and has been supposedly spotted several times since...
You're not referring to Ray Gricar, the assistant DA for Centre County (PA), are you? That would be a great case...there are allegations that he was seeing someone on the sly, and his laptop computer was found in a stream minus its hard drive. All kinds of possibilities in that case.
And I second the nomination of Bill Kurtis as the new Robert Stack. Of course, I've always wanted to do it too :)

I just saw this segment tonight and was particulary intrigued because much of the story happened in my area including his capture which occurred down the road in Hamilton, Ontario.

Right with you, Kane. That one has always intrigued me ever since you referenced it way back and I checked it out.
James T 06-29-2007, 02:08 AM Chris Benoit as there was no suicide note and a lot of speculation as to why he did what he did.
wiseguy182 06-29-2007, 03:38 AM I would be very interested to see a report on the controverial death of Ephraim Lewis, who was an up-an-coming r&b singer in the early 90's. the LAPD ruled it as a suicide, but there is evidence to suggest otherwise. Some have compared him to Seal, but I think Seal has quite a bit higher pitched voice, where as Ephraim's was deeper and smoother. "drowning in your eyes" is one of the hidden gems of the adult contemporary/quiet storm, worth listening to if you can find it.

You mean you don't want Mario Lopez narrating! He's got enough shows anyway as it is! Yes, Bill Curtis or someone like that would be great.

Big3sCompanyFan 06-30-2007, 11:59 PM Chris Benoit as there was no suicide note and a lot of speculation as to why he did what he did.
He could have done it because his son's disability is lot worse than he thought since his son would've been disabled for life and short which is why he was giving him HGH.
The poster who said the missing Purdue student--He was found dead in a utility closet or something.
I would say the Jennifer Kesse and Johnia Berry cases are both pretty intriguing.
Also, I don't think UM ever did the missing Springfield 3 did they?
wiseguy182 07-01-2007, 12:17 AM Another wrestler died a few weeks before Benoit - Sensational Sherri Martel, a former women's world's champion and manager. There are conflicting reports about whether she died from natural causes, drug overdoes or met with foul play. They said it will take about 5 to 6 months for the toxicology reports to come back, which seems like a long time. This should be one to watch as well.
I used to follow pro wrestling back in the late 80's/early 90's before all of the overly dramatic stuff they show nowadays. It is a bit strange that so many people in this profession die relatively early, for an assortment of reasons. Perhaps an unsolved mystery?
James T 07-01-2007, 03:26 AM Sadly not, most of it is due to heavy usage of muscle relaxants/painkillers throw in steroid and cocaine abuse and you have a lethal mix.

yeah, you're probably right. I know a lot of people think wrestling is 100% fake, but it's more real than some people realize. Of course, it's scripted mostly and they try not to injure each other as much as possible, but injuries still do occur.
LooksLikeCRicci 07-02-2007, 07:42 AM Wade Steffey, the Purdue student, was found in an electrical room. The authorites believe that he wandered in and was electrocuted on the night he disappeared.
I just can't believe that it took so long for his body to be discovered...

You're right in that the sort of women who get hired to do TV or voice work now are perky types, preferably busty, or with voices that sound perky and busty.
However, just b/c it's the Keelie Shay Smiths who tend to get hired, doesn't mean a woman couldn't be creepy and effective. I listen to a lot of old time radio shows and there are plenty of women on those old horror shows who are definitely capable of being creepy or disturbing, and/or having a husky-voiced gravitas. Many (not all) of these actresses were pretty plain-looking (which may be why they developed their voice talents so much) and so would never get hired, but the ability is there.
Right with you, Kane. That one has always intrigued me ever since you referenced it way back and I checked it out.
I am very glad to know that there are other people on this forum (besides myself) who have taken an interest in the Virginia Douglas case.
There's a lot about the case that didn't add up (and still doesn't). One example was her husband's claim that he purchased some items at a store as an "omen" for her to return. I've heard cases where potential crime suspects gave stories that struck me as suspicious or extraordinary. But I cannot recall any story like the one that Frank Douglas gave to authorities.
ididn'tdoit 07-12-2007, 09:47 AM I'd like to see UM do a segment about John Gosch, Eugene Martin and Marc James-Warren Allen, although it hasn't been proven that these cases are related, I feel there's a strong possibility they are, however.
Also how about Heidi Zampell, a 22 year old girl who disappeared in Florida in 1987, she was dropped off by a friend near her minister's house and was never seen again. But the twist is the minister Arthur Sims, claims Zampell didn't belong to his church and that she didn't even come to his house
Well maybe not very current but intriguing cases nonetheless :)

Most missing persons cases are not covered by the likes of Nancy Grace (who I can't stand by the way) or Greta. The cable news networks cover the heck out of a few stories but they are only a very few stories. Most murders and missing persons cases (especially involving adults) get very little media coverage so there is ample room available for a show like UM.

If it's of any consolation to you, a caller insulted Nancy Grace on the air last year. If you go to a search engine (like Google or ask.com) and type in "Nancy Grace" and "East Coast Bob", you will see that I'm not kidding.

Yes, there would be room for UM, as it was the original. Plus, I don't watch FoxNews, and I don't watch Nancy Grace.
