View Full Version : Nick at Nite Acquires AFV for April 2007 and George Lopez for Fall 2007
Pavan 03-08-2007, 11:24 AM Nick at Nite Adds Two Hit Comedies: George Lopez to Join the Lineup This Fall; YouTube Predecessor America's Funniest Home Videos, Hosted By Bob Saget, to Premiere Monday, April 30
George Lopez will premiere on Nick at Nite in Fall 2007. The award-winning series stars famed comedian George Lopez in this comedy series loosely based on Lopez's own experiences as a Mexican-American native of Los Angeles. Also stars Benny (Belita Moreno), Ernie (Valente Rodriguez), Angie (Constance Marie), Max (Luis Armand Garcia) and Carmen (Masiela Lusha).
New Series Will Join Previously Announced Home Improvement, as well as Hits Roseanne, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and The Cosby Show
NEW YORK, March 8 -- Nick at Nite has acquired two new hit comedy series - George Lopez and the show that began the user-generated content phenomenon, America's Funniest Home Videos, it was announced today by Tom Ascheim, Executive Vice President, General Manager, Nickelodeon Television. The network will roll out 111 half-hour episodes and two, one-hour specials of America's Funniest Home Videos beginning Monday, April 30 at 8:30 PM (ET/PT). The reality comedy hosted by Bob Saget (1990-97) features viewers' wacky candid videos, as Saget (Full House) does double-duty on Nick at Nite. In addition, the network has purchased all 120 episodes of George Lopez which will premiere Fall 2007 during Hispanic Heritage Month.
"Both series are huge favorites with families and are perfect for our audience. Nickelodeon/Nick at Nite is a pioneer of sharing 'user-generated content' with viewers, and America's Funniest Home Videos fit the 'UGC' definition before the term existed," said Ascheim. "George Lopez is one of America's funniest comedians, and he and his TV family connect with all ages and ethnicities."
The two new series join the Nick at Nite lineup of comedies, which will include Home Improvement, the recently added Growing Pains, the Emmy(TM) Award-winning series The Cosby Show, Full House, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Roseanne.
George Lopez debuted on ABC in 2002 and is now in its sixth season. Stand-up comedian George Lopez (Bread and Roses, Resurrection Blvd.) stars as the first guy to be promoted from the assembly line to plant manager at a Los Angeles airplane-parts factory. George's life at work and home never gets dull, thanks to his hilariously stubborn mother Benny (Belita Moreno), his pal Ernie (Valente Rodriguez) and his devoted wife Angie (Constance Marie) and kids. Their dyslexic son Max (Luis Armand Garcia) is a ball of energy, while daughter Carmen (Masiela Lusha) struggles to assert her own independence and conquer high school hurdles. George is further tested daily by the arrival of his newly divorced father-in-law Vic (Emiliano Diez). The executive producers of The Drew Carey Show - Bruce Helford, Academy Award(R) winner Deborah Oppenheimer and Robert Borden - team up with superstar actress/producer Sandra Bullock (Miss Congeniality, 28 Days, Speed) for this comedy loosely based on Lopez's own experiences as a Mexican-American native of Los Angeles. George Lopez is produced by Fortis Films, Mohawk Productions, Inc. in association with Warner Bros. Television. Lopez, David A. Caplan, Paul A. Kaplan and Mark Torgove serve as executive producers.
America's Funniest Home Videos premiered on ABC on January 14, 1990. Bob Saget served as host for eight seasons of the timeless American TV institution (1990-1997). Each episode features hilarious home videos that capture unexpected mishaps, practical jokes, embarrassing moments, animal acts and more. Bob Saget lends his extraordinary charisma and sense of humor, tying clips together in a style all his own. He has a humorous way of interacting with the audience and his voiceovers are truly memorable.
Now in its 17th season, America's Funniest Home Videos continues to entertain audiences nationwide. America's Funniest Home Videos is the longest-running entertainment program on ABC. It is produced by Vin Di Bona Productions and is distributed by Disney's Buena Vista Television.
MLBonTBS 03-08-2007, 01:07 PM The AFV episodes with Bob Saget were always my favorite. And they are picking up a show that's still on the air? (actually 2 shows if you count the new version of AFV). Is this part of the influence of Nickelodeon running Nick at Nite now?
Pavan 03-08-2007, 01:11 PM Yes, you can expect newer stuff on Nick at Nite now since Nickelodeon is running the show now. George Lopez is not a lock yet to return for season 7 this fall on ABC. If it does, I think this might be the first time a show is still on the air and also in reruns on Nick at Nite.
George Lopez is coming to local channels in September and Nick at Nite probably October 1.
Chillerfan 03-08-2007, 02:12 PM Actually, AFV would be the first! Lopez is such a bad show. It can't be expected to well in syndication if they are grabbing every dollar they can by selling to Nick at Nite.
Madness 03-08-2007, 03:28 PM Hmmm...never expected that, especially George Lopez. Interesting picks to say the least!
TVJunkie101 03-08-2007, 03:40 PM I'm a bit surprised at George Lopez. That belongs on TBS and syndication, not N@N, not that it's not a good fit for it. Too soon.
AFV isn't a bad choice, actually. It could lead into the night well.
Doesn't Roseanne's contract expire this year?
EmoJoe 03-08-2007, 03:53 PM AFV kinda fits, but George Lopez?! isnt Scrubs coming next year, too?
NASHMAN 03-08-2007, 03:58 PM AFV kinda fits, but George Lopez?! isnt Scrubs coming next year, too?
Scrubs is already in syndication and on Comedy Central. George Lopez is expected to air this fall.
Ireneparalegal 03-08-2007, 03:59 PM GOOD FOR GEORGE LOPEZ SHOW. However, I would have loved to see it on TBS or something like that...weird that N&N picked it up.
JulieSomoski 03-08-2007, 04:27 PM Something has to be done. Nick at Nite going to just modern classics was bad enough, but now going to shows still on the air? What are they doing? What are they expecting? There is no way George Lopez is going to do well on Nick at Nite. It can't even do well on ABC let alone a cable station.
It's about time they brought AMF to Nick at Nite. I've been waiting patiently for a long time, and this is it. It is sure to do well, Especially at 8:30.
So now since Home Improvement and [help me] George Lopez is coming in the fall, does this mean that Roseanne and Full House are not going to get renewed when they end in September? I mean, where else are they going to find room on there schedule other than not renew these 2 shows?
I am still really angry that Lopez is coming to NAN. I'll tell you, when Nickeodeon first bought out NAN, I was glad, since I thought we might see some great improvements. But now, it could be just about the worst thing that has ever happened in the history of NAN.
Scoobiedoo30 03-08-2007, 04:29 PM I think they will put AVF at 7:30 pm Central Time
I somewhat agree with Roseanne88-97. I thought Nickolodeon was really going to improve it, and with Growing Pains coming, maybe we could get some more decent 80s sitcoms in there....then came those constant schedule changes, the pre-emptions, etc now this..what are they thinking? I am starting to wonder how they expect to cram all of these shows in the line-up in addition to Family Matters coming next year and if they decide to air Scrubs. Except for Roseanne and Full House, I don't think any of their shows are expiring for a while.
Well at least they're getting on the ball and acquiring some shows. TV Land seems to keep everything hush and announce all of their shows at once, but the 'surprises' (like GP) are rather pleasant, IMO. I hope TV Land says something soon about their upcoming acquisitions.

Hmmmm, what ratings are you looking at?

3. Deal or No Deal (NBC), 4.6
4. Primetime (ABC), 4.5

Pav, can you provide more recent ratings regarding George Lopez show...it seems someone is mistaken regarding how "badly" it is doing...
Brian Damage 03-08-2007, 08:16 PM eh...
Chillerfan 03-08-2007, 08:20 PM What demo are those ratings from? That may be the week with the lowest HUT levels of the year but don't even try to tell me that George Lopez beats CSI, Grey's Anatomy and other hit shows that were in reruns (not to mention the shows pre-empted during that holiday week). Lopez couldn't be #1 anywhere except among Latina viewers.
troopoleon8897 03-08-2007, 08:34 PM this is probally what will happen when everything launches:
Nick
8:00 Full House
8:30 AFV
Nick @ Nite
9:00 Family Matters
10:00 Home Improvement
11:00 Roseanne
12:00 The Fresh Price Of Bel-Air
1:00 The Cosby Show
2:00 Marathons
5:00 Scrubs
5:30 George Lopez
Pavan 03-08-2007, 10:14 PM George Lopez is not a top 20 hit or anything, but it does respectable. Why else do you think it has been on for six seasons? The show is pretty durable even. Airing on almost every night during the week in first-run except Mondays and Thursdays (and it has aired in reruns on those nights lol). It is also reliable when something fails.
Nick at Nite really wanted it because the show is just entering syndication this fall on locals. Normally cable deals come 3-4 years after local airings. Scrubs is an example of a show entering cable and locals at the same time...which is strange, but I guess Comedy Central really wanted it. With Nickelodeon now in charge of NAN, I am not sure if Scrubs will be shared now. If it does, it sure wouldn't fit.
While I do agree it is too new of a show, family shows do very well in reruns and especially on Nick at Nite.
AFV will probably air 8:30pm and maybe another airing during the night.
Here is what I'm expecting by the fall:
8:30 AFV
9:00 Full House (I bet it will be renewed)
9:30 George Lopez

11:00 Roseanne (also bet it will be renewed)

1:00 Growing Pains
1:30 George Lopez
2:00 Marathons of Home Improvement, Roseanne, Fresh Prince and Cosby Show
5:00 AFV
5:30 Full House
thetornado 03-09-2007, 03:58 AM I am just glad they are showing something new instead of reruns of their current shows night after night also George Lopez is ABC's successful comedy right now along with according to Jim!
Also with N@N getting AFV does that mean ABC Family will stop playing them?
icecream 03-09-2007, 09:17 AM There's room for Roseanne and Full House to be renewed if they cut the marathons down to two hours. This is what I think they should schedule in September.
9:00 PM Growing Pains
9:30 PM Growing Pains
10:00 PM Home Improvement
10:30 PM George Lopez
11:00 PM Roseanne
11:30 PM Roseanne

2:00-4:00 AM Marathons
4:00 AM Home Improvement
4:30 AM George Lopez
5:00 AM Full House
5:30 AM America's Funniest Home Videos
That could be their schedule for Monday-Thursday nights. Move the Tuesday movie to Sunday so they can have the same schedule on weeknights.
Friday/Saturday schedule

10:30 PM Growing Pains
11:00 PM Home Improvement

5:30 AM America's Funniest Home Videos
Chillerfan 03-09-2007, 02:20 PM It does "respectably," not "respectable." Broken English aside, Lopez has been on because they have little else in the sitcom genre. It's good PR to have diversity and they had a big commitment to Helford after Drew Carey.
JulieSomoski 03-09-2007, 05:43 PM Again with George Lopez, it does have a stable fan base, but compare to other ABC shows, it is pretty low i nratings. I mean, look at Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives--they get almost 4 times as much ratings as George Lopez. Again, six seasons is amazing for a comedy today, but currently, it gets around 6-7 million. It is just an opinion, and I didn't mean to offend the George Lopez fans out there. I also think that is just too new of a show to be on Nick at Nite, which is why I believe it won't do as well as the other shows on the schedule.
Back to the schedule, Nick at Nite might end up renewing both of them, since they both do well, but then again if George Lopez and Home Improvement are hits, then they are not going to have much room. In my opinion, they should continue one contract, and drop the other, opening some space for other shows. If they renew both, here's what I believe the schedule would be:
Sunday's-Thursdays:
8:30 AFV
9:00 Full House
9:30 Home Improvement
10:00 Fresh Prince
10:30 George Lopez
11:00 Roseanne
11:30 Roseanne
12:00 The Cosby Show
12:30 Growing Pains (or Home Improvement)
1-5:00 Rotating marathons of Roseanne, Fresh Prince, The Cosby Show(and eventually Home Improvement)
5:00 AMF (or Growing Pains)
5:30 Full House
Pavan 03-09-2007, 06:31 PM roseanne88-97: While that is true, George Lopez would repeat better.
Chelsea 03-09-2007, 06:35 PM Scrubs airing on N@N is something I could *definitely* get behind - moreso than George Lopez or AFV. Scrubs is a damn fine show, and it's about time wider audiences are exposed to it.
Pavan 03-09-2007, 06:49 PM Scrubs wouldn't fit at all. I doubt they air it. It does fine on Comedy Central.
friendsfan77 03-09-2007, 08:25 PM Just when I thought Nick at Nite could not be getting any worse. ohno:
samanddiane4eva 03-09-2007, 10:52 PM Wow. Just when I thought Nick at Nite couldn't get any worse, it did.
If I was in charge of programming on Nick at Nite and Nickelodeon, Nickelodeon would air a lot of the shows it had from the 1990s and I'd take requests for what you'd want to air on Nick at Nite (up to a certain extent, of course).
I wish I was in charge of programming!
Brent88 03-10-2007, 01:41 AM I feel REALLY old now. Sheesh.
ClassicComedyFan2 03-10-2007, 02:46 AM Wow...such a recent sitcom on Nick @ Nite.
I remember the very first day I watched Nick at Nite. Had Beverly Hillbillies and Gilligan's Island and the most awesome TV motto ever: "100% Unreality."
N@N jumped the shark with the Cosby Show and its more modern ilk (Not that I have a problem with those shows, but they're so readily availble in syndie, TBS, etc.) and TV Land did when it stopped changing its fluid schedule and become more static and added their dreadful "original programming."
On a side note, the Bob Saget AFV is fine...but it still doesn't fit for me on Nick at Nite...
Mr. Monitor 03-10-2007, 01:02 PM Wow Pav,
I had no idea that Nickalodeon didn't have control over Nick at Nite as I always assumed they were essentially the same.
JulieSomoski 03-10-2007, 07:12 PM Lopez would definitely repeat better than most other shows, including Scrubs, which has kind of the same deal in syndication. In my opinion, if they do air Scrubs, it will only be a late night thing, like they did with NewsRadio.
I love the Saget Version of "America's Funniest Home Videos" better than the Bergeron version.
ABC Family is aquiring the Bergeron version in October, but The saget version will be on N@N. I hope they air the episodes from 1989-93.
ABC Family has the Saget version from 94-97. My company (Digiview Productions) has 90% of those episodes. And i am producing a spoof on YouTube called "The New America's Funniest Home Videos" using the saget theme, saget voting think music, the videos from the saget version, funny clips from animated movies (which i called it "Animation's Funniest Home Videos"), animated laugh tracks, clips from Bergeron's version. And for YouTube members, send in their funny or amazing videos electronically.
SAGET VERSION ROCKS!
