I don't know if this topic has been posted before, but how does everyone feel about the "Fats of Life" euphemism, or whatever?

I think it's stupid and very mean.:mad: Jo, Blair and Tootie weren't at all fat and neither was Natalie but she was a little chubby. I think the people in the 80's who started this mustv'e had their TV pictures on stretch or something because Jo, Blair, and Tootie were actually kind of thin.

I think back then people had those wide-screen console tv's and the pictures had no choice but to be stretched horizontally, thus making everything and all objects in the picture look wide. Kind of the reverse to what they did to Kung-Fu movies back in the 80's, where everything and everyone looked unnaturally thin and tall.

THE PRODUCERS WANTED THE GIRLS TO BE THINNER, SO THEY SENT THEM TO "FAT FARMS". THE GIRLS SAID THERE WAS ALWAYS FOOD AROUND THE SET AND SO THEY ATE. YOU CAN TELL THIS IN MANY EPS, AND I WONDER IF MANY OF THOSE SCENES WERE JUST "REAL MOMENTS" OF THE GIRLS JUST MUNCHIN DOWN:lol:

WHEN THE GIRLS WERE PROMOTING THE DVD'S, THIS CAME UP. I THINK LISA EVEN LOOKED AT MINDY AT ONE POINT, AND I REMEMBER FEELING A LITTLE UNCOMFORTABLE FOR MINDY. I DON'T KNOW IF NANCY NOTICED IT, TOO, BUT SHE QUICKLY ADDED, THAT SHE HAS NEVER BEEN A SIZE 0 AND STILL ISN'T.

I THINK THE GIRLS LOOKED GREAT THROUGHOUT THE SEASONS; AND GROWING UP WITH "FACTS" (I WAS 11 Y/O THE DAY IT AIRED) SO I WAS AROUND THE SAME AGE AS KIM. I NOTICED THAT MINDY WAS A LITTLE OVERWEIGHT, BUT WHO CARED!? SHE HAD THE BEST KIND OF PERSONALITY, AND I WOULD'VE LOVED TO HAVE BEEN NAT'S FRIEND:D

DOES ANYONE REMEMBER GROWING UP AND GOING THRU PUBERTY? MAYBE SOME OF YOU ARE GOING THRU IT RIGHT NOW. IT IS TUFF. NOW, HAVE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE STARE AT YOU EVERY WEEK, SCRUTINIZING YOU. NOW THAT'S REALLY TUFF:eek: I THINK THAT'S WHY THE GIRLS, WHEN DOING THE DVD TOURS SAID, GREAT! NOW THEY AND EVERYONE ELSE CAN RE-LIVE THEIR PUBERTY YEARS:lol:

I WAS ACTUALLY WATCHING THE EP, "ON THE EDGE" TODAY, AND THOUGHT HOW BEAUTIFUL ALL THESE GIRLS LOOKED. I THEN REFLECTED ON HOW FORTUNATE, PROUD AND HAPPY I WAS TO BE ABLE TO "GROW UP" WITH THESE WONDERFUL ROLE MODELS, BOTH ON SCREEN AND OFF.

THE QUALITIES OF THESE GIRLS SHOULD HAVE BEEN WHAT MATTERED AND NOT THE ISSUE OVER THEIR WEIGHT. REMEMBER WHAT MRS. G TOLD BLAIR, "NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER." BOY, I WAS FORTUNATE INDEED:D

I can relate to the gaining-weight-through-puberty thing. I was never fat as a kid, but when puberty hit, I felt the weight hit. Ironically, my nickname as a kid was "fatty" even though I was terribly skinny.

I could be wrong, but I think Joan Rivers coined the phrase, "The Fats of Life". I recall that she used it in her standup back in the day, but not sure if she was the first to say it.

I think it was pretty mean. I mean, like Jo jr said, all of us women go through puberty...We gain weight and loose weight and gain it all back again! Just because you're a star of a hit tv show doesn't mean it's not gonna happen to you!

Take Mindy Cohn for example. When I saw her on the first and second season, I honestly thought she was just fine the way she looked! I think the extra weight suited her and I was never fascinated in her pant size, but instead her perky personality.

Then when the second season rolled around, I noticed Lisa Welchel had gained a bit more weight, but I thought it was better for her because in my opinion, she was too thin in the first season. Kim Fields looked the same, just a bit more taller. And I always thought Nancy Mckeon was the skinniest of the group and in my opinion, too skinny for her height and age.

Then, later on in the second season I noticed a huge difference in Lisa. She hardly ever wore pants anymore. She always wore denim skirts and one size too big shirts ticked into the skirts. I never understood why she dressed like that because I thought she had a great figure.

Then came the third season. It looked to me like Mindy had lost a small amount of weight, which like I said was small, but noticeable. And it was evident that Lisa, Nancy, and Kim had gained a bit more weight. But it never made me think that they were fat...I always thought that they were just growing into their bodies! And yet again, Lisa was only wearing the skirts during the shows and when "The Four Musketeers" came along, she finally wore pants in the famous paint fight scene, and I thought she looked wonderful! She didn't look fat to me at all!

Then season 4 came along and to me, it seemed like Lisa, Nancy and Mindy were getting thinner while Kim was only about 13 or 14 when they taped the episodes, and her body was still growing. Then after that, it was Nancy pretty much staying the same size, Lisa going from kinda thick back to thin and then back again, Mindy loosing TONS of weight, and Kim staying kinda thick. All of which I think was NO PROBLEM!

I totally agree with Jo jr when she says that the reason for the girls weight toubles was because of puberty. That's the reason why most of us women gain weight and I mean, c'mon if you have a table full of food, and you're bored, of course you're gonna eat the food without thinking about the consequences. So overall, I don't think it was fair to blow up the fact that the girls all gained a little weight during the time of the show. I mean, that's what the show was all about! Tennage girls turning into young women...And that's what the Facts Of Life is all about! Growing up, experiencing different things, and obsessing about your weight...Lol. Baiz.

I relate to you, Jo jr. Whenever I buy liquor, I have to show ID. One time (about six months ago) this cashier wouldn't even let me buy smokes because I had no I.D. The guy behind me in line bought them for me. Another time I was 17 and the waitress asked if I needed a children's menu!!! THAT'S how bad it was. Oh and about summers? I left in May (I was in a private school and we got out mid-May). When I came back in September, I had grown about three inches and my bra size went from 34B to 36C. My hips grew too. In fact, I developed so quickly, I had stretch marks for years. Big, nasty stretch marks. I remember working out at school on this weight machine and this girl I hated shouted out, "Boy you have a big chest for your size". I was mortified. I said something snotty in response, but I can't remember what it was. We had a strict dress code at my school, so I couldn't really hide it. Man, that gave those kids ammunition! First, they singled me out because I was the scholarship kid and THEN it was because of my body. I am SO GLAD not to be a teenager anymore!

Jodi and Anne, I can totally relate to how nobody believes that either one of you are the ages that you actually are. The same thing happens to me all the time. People think that I am at most only in my early 20's. If I go out to eat and order an alcholic beverage (the only time I really ever drink alcohol) I often get carded. I sometimes get asked for my I.D. when I see a rated R movie too. :lol:

Yes, Nancy said she's never been, nor is a size Zero. And who want's to be uber skinny, anyways? I think you might get a laugh or two when you look at these 3 pics! These are what size 0's look like! Can you guess who 2 of the 3 size zero's are?

Janice nailed it, Joan Rivers, the same who made rape jokes on Arsenio Hall, called the girls from FOL "The fats of life" it wasn't funny then and it isnt' now. Natalie may have been chubby, but never fat and the rest.. Please! Speaking as a guy and pardon the language, any of the four lead girls were "Do-able". One of the reasons FOL was so successful was that the girls were so real and relatable. None in my opinon were fat. As far as the clothes go, it takes some girls a while to be comfortable in thier own skins. Kim and Nancy particular, went through periods were they weren't at ease with thier new curves. I think its really stupid the way people obsess over how other people look, really who wants to be super skinny and starve themselves. I thought the girls were fine, and so what if they did gain weight everybody does, its normal especially throught pubery. Even though it might suck alot it happens and its all part of human nature. :)
