OMG I agree! Ringo was not the best singer in the group, but I liked his version MUCH better!

As for other theme songs I dislike, I was annoyed by the one from Seinfeld. I know, it wasn't really a "song" and didn't last long--but maybe those things were the problem. And although I looooove Will Smith and Fresh Prince of Belair was one of my favorites, I didn't care for hearing that song every week LOL! It was cute and funny a few times, then it started to grate!

Reaching back a bit, the theme to Welcome Back Kotter was another one that was overplayed (on the radio, even!) and began to get on my nerves.

It doesn't surprise me since I can't stand the goof who wrote it either - Alan Thicke! He brags that it took him only minutes to write - no sh*t sherlock!! It sounds like it too! And could they find more annoying singers??!! ARRRGH!

Yeah, it had to grow on me, and even at that, I still scratch my head as to how he got to be so famous with that scratchy voice! I guess I was influenced a bit by an older brother's girlfriend who just loved him. I like Little Help better than his version of "You Are So Beautiful" but that was a top 10 hit???? Go figure!! I always liked Belushi's take on him on SNL tho!

I think why that song got used is because it was from the period - everyone knew the song and its about "friends" which is the central focus of the show -Kevin growing up and interacting with friends. I'm sure they would have used the Beatles version had they been allowed, but before McCartney "sold his soul to the devil" (MJ buying the Beatles catalog) they didn't allow their music to be played for commercial purposes. Hence, the use of Cocker's version.

Hey - as popular as they are, I still scratch my head over some of Janis' songs and for the life of me, can't see what everyone sees in Alanis Morrisette (sp?) (Her voice is like nails on a blackboard to me - luckiest Canadian on earth)!!

Thank God there's someone else out there like me!! I cringe at the crap that's popular especially today! Makes me wonder what's happened to the music industry.

I could NOT STAND Gimme a Break's theme. I know someone who always used to say, "I'll give ya a break... in your teeth!" to the TV whenever that song came on.

The Facts of Life was also bad. What was it with NBC and the early 80s themes? (Except for CHiPs... that rocked.)

OMG! Don't even remind me of that PoS! I can't stand Nell's screeching voice in that song! Same way w/ Linda Lavin & Alice. (No offense, but I don't like Linda Lavin singing that theme.)

I rather liked the Dear John theme song..."Dear John. Dear John. By the time you read these lines I'll be gone". I can see why some would hate it. The woman sang it in a pretty high pitch.

Actually, I did live in that time (graduated HS in 78...when I was born, the 1950s still had a couple of weeks left:elvis:, and I remember Joe Cocker very well... a lot of my friends liked him, but I couldn't stand his voice... he just never impressed me at all...never understood the appeal.

But you are right...I know a lot of friends of mine just raved about Joe Cocker. One friend in paticular kept asking me if I'd ever heard Joe Cocker,and kept pestering me to listen to one of his records... I don't remember which one, but when I did finally hear it, I thought, "what's the big deal about this guy?"...

But the other morning, my wife was watching a show early in the morning. After her show was over, Happy Days came on, and the TV was still running.. and they played the last version of the theme song...omg, that was horrible! I'd stopped watching Happy Days a long time ago, and never even knew that version existed... that version definitely belongs in the pantheon of bad TV theme song performances... wow, was that ever bad!!

I recall turning on the TV at the same time I always had, to see the syndicated "Taxi," while I was still snuggled in bed, just listening, not watching, and could hear that theme song and Judd Hirsch's voice, and thought it was another episode of Taxi, yet couldn't figure out who the other characters were. I dozed off, and this went on for quite a few mornings, until I figured it out. I hadn't recalled that show at all, when it was originally on. But I resented the local channel replacing Taxi with it!

I agree. The Who's The Boss theme was horrible. Friends theme was terrible. What I Like About You theme is almost as awful as the show itself. More often than not the instrumental themes are far better than the ones with words.

The theme from Psych. I love the show, but I usually skip the theme song when watching it.

it's a great theme song. I love the actual theme song the best . . . I've only heard the entire song a few times, but it's also good. Didn't like the last season theme as much, though. It was still a great melody (at the beginning), and it was time for a change, but the entire theme with words was better!

The opening and closing theme to ABC's version of "Matlock" was not one of my favorites,(The ABC version aired from 1992-the first ABC episode was "The Vacation"-to 1995 -all of the episodes from 1986 to 1992 were NBC,with the last NBC episode being 1992's"The Assassination",had a great theme),nor was the military-march sounding theme to the color episodes of "Gilligan's Island".The opening and closing theme used in the black and white first season episodes was a light-tropical sounding theme and was much better.

Themes I really disliked were:

Friends - I couldn't stomach watching the show already, but the theme song sealed its fate.

Roseanne - I always cringe the second the opening note from this show plays and I really disliked the final version w/ lyrics.

Cosby Show, The - The last two versions, especially the final season one.

Rhoda - The ones used after the 1st season.

The theme song to the TV version of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" really sucked just like the show.

I'm the opposite, I love that version while I'm not too buzzed over the earlier ones.

Oh man, that's SO true! I have most of the DVD seasons and on EVERY show they have the theme song! I noticed on the Joan of Arcadia Season 1 DVD, the theme song (which I love by the way!) is only on the first episode. That Full House song does get annoying after hearing it 20 or so times; even the chopped up versions!

I liked the theme when it was just instrumental. When lyrics were added, I couldn't listen to it anymore.

Hopefully, when the show has been on for a few years, they'll decide to ditch the intro and just start showing the opening credits during the first scene.

If the "Two and a Half Men" opening theme floats your boat, it's all good. What you do about "Friends" is something that I would do if I enjoyed the series, which, of course, I, for one, do not. You don't happen to have any of the DVD releases of that series, do you? The reason I ask that is that, if you had the DVD releases, when you heard the first bars of that song, you could probably skip ahead to the next scene (unless I'm mistaken). Is that true?

Amen to Happy Days final season. What were they thinking? They should have left well enough alone. Also, although it wasn't bad, there was no need to change the Diff'rent STrokes theme for the final season, either.

Not necessarily DISLIKE, but the second season variation of the Muppet Babies end music makes me rather sad because it retained the music (VERY 80s music) from a practically non-existent show (Little Muppet Monsters) at the end. It disturbs me slightly to think that I've been hearing a montage of a theme to a show that basically did not exist for 20+ years. I did catch the pilot for LMM on YouTube and I thought it was rather weird for a kids' show. No wonder it didn't work out.

I always liked it, espescially the long version. And I agree with TripperFan on "The Facts of Life" and everyone else who's not a fan of Joe Cocker's cover of "With a Little Help From My Friends." John Belushi's spoof of him kicked ass.

Speaking of Alan Thicke, the theme from "Growing Pains" has never been anything else but annoying to me. In one episode late in the series I think they made fun of it(Kirk Cameron & Chelsea Noble were supposed to be in some acapella singing group or something, I forget the story line behind that).

"I'll Be There For You," from Friends was irritating, but for the first season and a half, I thought it was catchy. The same goes for "Found a Way," from Drake & Josh, however, lately I'm starting to warm up to it a bit again.

Another candidate I nominate was the final season theme tune of Diff'rent Strokes.

Of the three or four '80s Embassy-TV-produced shows "Diff'rent Strokes," "Silver Spoons," "The Facts of Life" and "Who's the Boss?," the updated theme tune for "Diff'rent Strokes" had the worst updated theme tune of the four.

The "La La La LaLa La La Lala" version of the Rhoda theme. It sounded like the kids from Sesame Street.

Out of curiosity, I found the theme song you are talking about on Youtube. That was pretty bad! They should have kept the original, most definitely!!!

Like another poster who got over emotional, I feel the need to defend a few that are some of my favorites: Sanford & Son, All in the Family, Good Times, Amen, Perfect Strangers and Silver Spoons. Also some other good ones like: Gimme a Break, 70s Show, Wonder Years (you would think the original would have to be better, but no, Joe Cocker sucks - his version of nothing is better), Who's the Boss, Charles in Charge (hated the show, but good song), Matlock, Big Bang, Facts of Life, Growing Pains, Dear John, Newhart, St. Elsewhere. Sorry, but I feel protective and sentimental over all of these and makes me agree that some of you have questionable taste. These were great themes.

Now to the list of the ones I hate...

Step by Step (this was like the last show that attempted to have a good, traditional theme song...fail).

Can I just say everything after 1990? Sure, there are a couple good ones sprinkled in, but the % goes way down with each passing decade. Starting in the 2010's and going backwards it creeps up through the 90s, then there is a huge spike in the 80s that bell curves back to the 50s.
