View Full Version : Geico's Cavemen Getting a Comedy Series

ABC has turned the series of quirky Geico commercials featuring caveman characters into an actual half-hour comedy project, reports Variety.

"Cavemen" will revolve around three pre-historic men who must battle prejudice as they attempt to live as normal thirtysomethings in modern Atlanta.

The project, from ABC TV Studio, is written by Joe Lawson, an advertising copywriter who was behind the "Caveman" ads -- as well as other Geico commercials like the cockney-speaking Geico gecko.

Daniel Rappaport, Guymon Cassady, Will Speck and Josh Gordon are executive producers. Speck and Gordon, commercial directors who recently helmed the Will Farrell feature Blades of Glory, are on board to also direct.

Jeff Daniel Phillips and Ben Weber play the cavemen in the Geico spots; no word if they'll make the transformation to the TV project.

I would defintely watch, i mean he had my attention on a 2 min commercial so you know I would love to see 30 min of him-lol

I agree, this could be a sitcom I might actually enjoy. Granted, 30 seconds or a minute is waaay different then a 30 minute show, but it might work.

I think what Brian meant was the project is still in the development stage.

They have to make a pilot episode, but that doesn't guarantee the Network (in this case ABC) will like it and "pick it up" and make it into a series.

If they are careful, this thing might just work! I love the commercials...I would just hate for the commercials to be forgotten if the show is a flop. It could go either way very easily and I'd hate for it to go the wrong way! I'm rooting for them and hope it turns out to be a decent show!

I don't know. I think that too much exposure would diminish their charm. Once a character has expanded he gets dull.( ie: Fonzie, Urkel, etc.) I guess it would be fun for a few episodes but it would probably wear thin very quickly. I say stick with the ads!:D

A sitcom COULD work if they don't ruin the intergrity of it; such as changing Snow White on The Charmings into a regular, interchangable 1990s-style modern woman ---what was the point of that? I could watch that on any show. Or making Ugly Betty beautiful and trendy; or Mork and Mindy's various incarnations ( some things I liked, others not ). ABC messes with its shows.
:bash: :smash:

The activist Geico caveman should stay angry and peeved at matters. But I see rich material in this. It's a show I'd want to work on, as a writer or crew member. I'd be IN on this.

Little Red Light ain't no porno. This is a simple and sweet short tale about a husband, a wife, and a video camera. He gets the camera and is dying to make a video with her. She is not so enthused. In fact, she wants nothing to do with the camera at all, and locks herself in the bathroom. Crestfallen that she won't participate, he reluctantly hands over the camera, and she proves to be a much more demanding director than he had ever imagined.

The montage of goofing around for the camera is priceless improv from the writer/director Ben Weber, who a lot of people will recognize as Skippy from Sex in the City. It appeared at several festivals where it was well received. Well worth a look.

This idea has been done before! (well sorta) In 1966-67, CBS aired a short-lived series called It's About Time. Synopsis: Hector and Mac are two astronauts who break the time barrier and travel back in time to prehistoric days. Gronk (Joe E. Ross) is a caveman with his wife Shadd (Imogene Coca) In the middle of it's run do to low ratings the creators reversed the concept and sent the cavemen to 20th century earth where they tried to fit in.
