Hello,

The show Unsolved Mysteries had to be released by categories due to legal reasons which prohibited a season by season approach. I always knew that there was something unusual why a top rated show couldn't be released season by season. The person wouldn't say specific legal grounds for it, but if they did it seemed a legal injunction could be filed against their holding company. My guess is that when the show was transfered from NBC to CBS there was some general releases with stipulational clauses that gave NBC and not Cosgrove/meurer the rights to how the show can get rebroadcasted. So if NBC dosen't give permission then they can't do the season by season thing. But that is pure speculation. Your guess is good as mine!

When I saw the show from 1988 to 1997 it was often in the nielson top 10 ratings. So even a Limited pressing would make sense. But that won't happen either due to legal reasons.

I also found out some other things by reading between the lines. But I won't speculate further. Well atleast the hardcore fans can stop blaming them for the category releases.

I can't help but laugh whenever someone asks why they couldn't do season sets of UM. It's not unlike asking for season sets of "60 Minutes" or the local news.

:) "Where ever possible.. real people ....This is NOT a news broadcast".....:) ;)

Different Genre... but then again it is easier to get a years worth of old news papers (go to your local library) then it is a full season of UM.

Ok so when do we head toward rockafeller plaza with our torches and pitchforks!

We want full season dvds!

Head toward First Look instead. First Look, not NBC, is responsible for the distribution of the UM DVDs.

Although NBC aired UM for a decade, they never officially owned the series. So they have no control over the show's DVD releases.

Write to First Look at the following address:

First Look Studios, Inc.
2000 Avenue of the Stars
410 Century City, CA 90067

I always thought I remembered hearing that the reason they didn't do season sets was that a lot of the same segments were run in many episodes and if they released it by seasons many of the same segments would have been used. I can't remember where I heard that.

Well, Lifetime was known to "splice" different episodes together. How many times did we see the School Bombing and Resurrection Mary woven in with other segments that they didn't originally air with?

Someone mentioned that the reason for this was because the episodes were purchased in such a manner that Buena Vista got copyright for some, but not other segments. You could search the threads for that, as I know it's there. Or maybe Justin or DarkDante can elaborate more for me. :)

i think it is a shame really that they have not already released the season dvds of this show!!! they can easily make dvds without repeating segments...

That was always the reason I assumed there were no season sets. I'd be curious to know whether they even still have the original episodes (that is, not rearranged by Lifetime or edited for time).
