Which of these shows do you prefer? Post comments here and cast your votes! The Addams Family was more of an ensemble, a little bigger cast of characters and they all had their contributions to the episodes. The Munsters, while also a family was more about the antics of Herman Munster and Grandpa. The secondary characters were less involved in the episodes, and it's noticeable when compared to The Addams Family. Both shows have their merit, but over the years I think The Munsters has generally been the more popular show. It had better writing overall, and nothing can compare to the goofy and lovable persona of Herman Munster. So my vote goes to The Munsters.

The Munsters is a little more important to me, but I love The Addams Family as well. They're both such fun series!

I know a lot of people try to compare the Munsters and the Addams Family but frankly, they were two different shows. I am a Munsters fan, so I prefer the Munsters. It was slapstick, screwball comedy. The performances were more over the top and farcical.

The Addams Family is viewed by critics as more "sophisticated". To me, it was more subdued. Not really screwball comedy, just a comedy which often times had rather lethargic pacing. I always got the impression the show took itself too seriously. Plus, The Munsters were actually monsters while the Addams Family was more wildly eccentric characters.

The Munsters contain more endearing characters. Herman, Lily and Grandpa were lovable characters. The Addams Family is more like an ensemble show with no one character standing out.

Sorry, I'm going to have to go with The Addams Family...they had Lurch and Gomez, two of my favorite TV characters ever!!

I liked both shows too, but the Munsters seemed funnier to me. So I'd go with it.

I am going with the Munsters and I loved Grandpa Munster and I would love to marry Marilyn and help grampa in his lab in the dungeon

I always preferred The Munsters over The Addams Family for the
same reason that I like The Three Stooges more than The Marx Brothers:
broad slapstick, to me, is funnier than subtle humor. One could draw the
same comparison, in terms of sophistication, between Everybody Loves
Raymond and Frasier. One seems to be low-brow, the other high-
brow. And I've always gotten more laughs from low-brow humor. I don't
know what that says about me but ... :lol:

I remember answering this question on the Addams Family board years ago, and the answer remains the same-- Munsters. My simple reason is that The Munsters was just more flagrantly funny-- they were more spoof than satire, while the AF was more satire than spoof, or maybe they were close to equal on AF. And another thing about their humor was that AF was too repetitive-- how many times can you laugh at "Ah, the mail's in" with Thing handing it to them," or pulling the hangman's noose, wherever they happened to be, and Lurch comes and says "YYYooouuu rrraaannnggg?" But they do a laughtrack in every case. And eventually everything gets to where it is totally expected-- they have a visitor, Lurch introduces him in his vocal vibrations and roughtly pulls his hat off; Gomez is playing with his trains and wrecks them, Uncle Fester puts his head in the clamp for a headache and pop! he's okay... yeah, too many of the very same gags.

It's not that the M's are completely clear of that, but there's almost always some new angle with it. For example, the raven in the clock comes out and says "Never more!" but it's always a sassy reply to a question. But the M's did overdo a thing or 2, such as when something is proposed, one of them (usually Lily) says, "No-- the last time we did that....." and she describes a wild incident probably too hard to film; such as, 'let Spot out for while'-- "No, the last time we did that he drank 10 gallons of gasoline and ate half a Jaguar." But the point is, it was nearly always something not said before, as well as their visual gags being unique instead of the too-expected as the AF.

Out of the 2 I like The Munsters the best. Herman is so likeable,and funny.Grandpa too? I do like Addams Family as well. Both shows never fail to make me laugh.And I bought both shows on DVD. But out of the 2 The Munsters is defently the best.

The Addams normal? Ok theres a guy that can light up light bulbs with his mouth.They have a pet hand called Thing,and then theres cousin It-Dont know what he is? He sure does talk funny thoe. Yeah sounds like a normal family to me.

Both shows have merit, but I think most fans of classic TV would prefer The Munsters. Overall, it is the more likeable show, appealing to the majority of people. The Addams Family is more of an acquired taste. While I prefer The Munsters and I have the DVD's, I'll probably get The Addams Family DVD also because I would like to have both shows in my DVD library.

I liked the Munsters better. As others have said, the characters were more endearing and I liked the story lines more.

The Munsters. I brought The Addams Family set on dvd not long ago, I wished I never did because..well this may sound mad..but I feel like I'm cheating on the The Munsters :lol: I think its Gomez I find him sleazy! lol.

I would of liked the Addams Family better if had been more like the Charles Addams original with them more dark and gothic instead of how they were adapted for television, steering more toward cheery and eccentric.
I don't buy the opinion that the Munsters were lowbrow by comparison with a dependency on slapstick, high-speed film visual gags. You saw those high-speed chases on rare occassion, the show was as dialog-driven as the Addams Family.

I never liked the notion that "The Addams Family" was suppose to be "sophisticated" somehow. It was a "fantasy" sitcom, much like "Bewitched", "The Munsters" and "I Dream of Jeannie". Any reasonably intelligent viewer knew it was totally make-believe, but these shows were watched in a desire to be entertained, not be apart of the intellectual jet set. "The Addams Family" was thought to appeal to a higher-IQ'd audience, but it really didn't. I enjoyed the slapstick and the characterizations much better on "The Munsters" than "The Addams Family".
