This is about the 2nd time Col. Potter left Hawkeye in charge when he went to visit a sick friend in Tokyo. The first time, he had trouble running the base, especially when he and B.J. got into a disagreement, which Col. Potter subsequently put an end to with his command. The second time, Hawkeye was able to relax, have B.J. assist him and allow the platoon to work, free of instruction, while Klinger took care of the paper work. Of course, the unit still had work to do as far as attending to incoming patients, especially children. When the children had a complication with the medicine they were given, Hawkeye calmly handled the situation by having the unit place bunks for the kids to sleep in for the night. Col. Potter returned the next day, the kids were treated and were on their way. Afterwards, Hawkeye turned command back over to Col. Potter. The second time around, I believe Hawkeye received first-hand instructions from Col. Potter on being acting C.O., which included relaxing, giving the unit the freedom to work without instruction, have B.J. assist him and not panic when serious situations arise. Potter knew he could trust Hawkeye, and the second time around, he didn't let him down. This is from the episode "Old Soldiers". Now, chime in with your thoughts.
