I'm going to go with the Roth years. It was in that era they came out with "You Really Got Me" and "Pretty Woman". I prefer VH's versions to the originals!! They also did "Jump", "Panama" and "Ice Cream Man" during that time, also terrific songs!! :D

EVH and DLR also had that certain singer/guitarist chemistry, ala Mick Jagger/Keith Richards and Axl Rose/Slash. The Hagar period is good, but I prefer the band's early years...next?

I actually like both equally.

I also like both but I kind of like Sammy Hagars singing a little better than
David Lee Roths.

Both era's put out great music but the Roth time was the best. He was the first and Sammy was the replacement. DLR was the ultimate frontman for a band. Not too many of those come along that can put both music and showmanship together. Freddy Mercury was one of those type frontmen.

I love both eras, but my favorite will always be the Sammy Hagar era. Sammy is a far better singer than Dave and a better lyricist too. Sammy and Eddie were just a great pair and wrote such amazing music together from heavy stuff like "Black And Blue", "Poundcake" and "Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)" to mellower songs like "Dreams", "Love Walks In" and "When It's Love".

You're right, and I would say the same goes for Steve Perry/Journey.

I've been listening to more and more Van Halen lately, and I believe that Sammy Hagar was the better vocalist of the two. But most of my favorite VH songs are from the Roth era, so the Roth era of VH is still my favorite.

As much as I love the Dave era music, I will always a special place in my heart for the Sammy era music. Sammy era Van Halen is what I grew up on afte rall.

There is a comic strip in the Chicago Tribune called Hagar the Horrible. I wonder if Dave's behind this strip since it is no secret that he and Sam don't like each other.

So I guess they just did the "Sans Valen" tour together in 2002 strictly for the money and not because they enjoy each other's company, huh? I've been listening to a lot of VH music this year and one song I keep coming back to over and over again is "Dreams" - I can't see Dave pulling it off. Sammy was amazing on this track. :D

"Dreams" is probably Sammy's greatest vocal performance. And yeah, there is no way that Dave could pull that song off. I'm wondering that if the band finally comes around to record a new album and tours to support it, how Dave will manage to sing Sammy's songs.

Roth's era was the best, although for years Eddie and Roth were not on the best of terms. One of the reasons Roth got fired by EVH in 1985 was that Dave was too controlling and unprofessional, according to Eddie. Sammy was a great vocalist, but their music and image was too conservative compared to their wild "Diamond Dave" era.

The Roth era for me.

I have never been a fan of anything Sammy Hagar has ever done

What?? No Montrose, "Rock the Nation", "Space Station #5", "Bad Motor Scooter", no "Rock Candy"?
How about "Red", "Trans-Am (Highway Wonderland)", or the classic "Heavy Metal"?
