I don't really think there was a problem with Kirk becoming a religious person...I actually thought it was better for the show. It was in the later years when Kirk decided he didn't want to play a slacker anymore Thinking back, it actually made sense, because Mike was getting older, and he couldn't be immature forever. He had to grow up sometime.

And I liked your point about no Titanic, LOL. Without Leo coming to Growing Pains, he might not have even been discovered by hollywood.

I think if Kirk had not "been saved" his role on GP and the show itself would have changed. As Mike transformed from a cute kid to a handsom man, the producers were trying to move him into more provocative sexual situations. He had the well known dispute with producers over a scene where he was supposed to be waking up in bed with a girl and asks her what her name was. He refused the scene and set a standards line with the producers.

yea, i'm sure we would have encountered an episode wher emike lost his virginity and then waking up in bed with a girl would have been a very common thing... i'm sure mike's character would have been the "party college kid" that i find to be pretty typcial on my campus... but yea, things for mike sure would have been different!

The results would had been the same but in a different form. When that happened Growing Pains was beginning to play out. The show was slipping each season after 4th season. The show ran its course. Unfortunately whole thing with Kirk becoming a Christian and Tracey Gold's battle with anorexia at the same time impacted the show.

I agree. The show would have run it's course after 7 or 8 seasons anyhow. No show can go on forever. The only bad thing about what happened on the show as far as I'm concerned is they wrote Julie off who I liked better than Kate. But After they aged Chrissy it was all down hill from there.

When did Kirk actually become a religious fanatic? That was such a downer for me, because I will always have him embedded in my head as Mike Seaver the slacker! It's very surprising that Kirk would have taken that path. I tried to watch his, "Way of the Master" series on TBN or whatever it's on and I just can't get through one sitting. In personality, this was too large of a transformation for me to handle.

Yea I totally agree with you. You hear about so many child stars who get into trouble...Kirk is first class all the way. Still married to the same girl too. Their's a lot worst things than finding religion. And who knows if he would have stayed a big star anyway. Many of them do fade. It didn't matter to Kirk. He went his own way. Yes he did make mistakes in the early going with Growing Pains but the series was only going to last 7 or 8 years anyhow. He didn't ruin anything.

I agree with Noelia. I'm a Christian and think Kirk is awesome. Him becoming a Christian didn't ruin anything. He became a Christian in the third season, correct? The third season was great.

No Titanic movie? I beg to differ. "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" is what made Leo's acting career boomed. I don't think Growing Pains had much at all to do with him becoming famous. Then again, thats just my opinion.

I don't get where all the hatred for Kirk's choices come from either. What's sad is if he had became a burnt out child star on drugs or in jail, he would be much more respected, then he is for becoming a moral decent man, with a long standing marriage who raises his children to be moral. even if you don't like what he has to say at least he stands up for what he believes in- and is an individual- unlike most of Hollywood.

If Kirk Cameron had not converted to Christianity................... (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088527/board/thread/237962288)

Arguably, the real beginning of the end (https://web.archive.org/web/20140407131419/http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/topic/2851490-growing-pains/page-9#entry7478350) for the show was once Mike began teaching. It just rang so false that this knucklehead that had little ambition in life (until he wanted to become an actor) suddenly became a teacher.

They did the same to Who's the Boss and Perfect Strangers and for the same reasons.

They did the same to Who's the Boss and Perfect Strangers and for the same reasons.

I remember that ABC during (https://www.reruncentury.com/primetime/1991-1992/) the 1991-92 season (https://benjamonsterstv.blogspot.com/2021/12/schedules-of-past-1991-1992-saturdays.html), had a block called (https://www.reddit.com/r/theGoldenGirls/comments/wtwk2a/golden_girls_on_the_nbc_saturday_night_lineup/) "I Love Saturday Night", which was meant to be an extension of their big TGIF block on Friday nights. The block didn't last very long, I think in no small part because Who's the Boss?, Growing Pains, and Perfect Strangers (https://www.everything80spodcast.com/perfect-strangers/) were already on their last legs (https://www.reddit.com/r/ObscureMedia/comments/2q2vgx/1992_balki_and_larry_host_the_first_airing_of/) at that point. So it's within reason to just suspect that ABC sent those shows out (https://www.facebook.com/GrowingPainsTV/photos/a.615712151811180/1849285525120497/?type=3) to Saturday nights (https://perfectstrangersreviewed.wordpress.com/page/14/?cat=-1) to quietly die.

The BBC and ITV over in the UK call their version of that same strategy that the American ABC used in 1991-92 to kill off GP, WTB and PS "suicide".
