Okay, they have a phone number but "no area code". My question is, couldnt they just have tried the various area codes in the area of the concert, county, or even the various states where this happened.
For instance, If I went missing now and just left a number, they could try maybe 7 area codes for about half the state of IL and somebody would answer this number eventually.
Any thoughts?

Yes I've thought the same thing too. Surely they should be able to try all the possible combinations of that number and come up with some sort of clue.
Let's toss around the possibility that law enforcement tried many area codes with that number. Could it be possible that these girls gave him a wrong number because they didn't want to be contacted? I've done it in the past with my friends as a joke. After calling Pizza Hut twice they gave up. Maybe the number was disconnected because the girls moved and didn't leave any forwarding addresses or contacts? Perhaps the number was valid but it connected the caller to a person who really didn't know either girl or maybe had not heard from them in a long time?
