SAN DIEGO - Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer was fired Monday night in a shocking move by team president Dean Spanos, who cited a "dysfunctional situation" between the coach and general manager A.J. Smith.

Less than a month after San Diego's NFL-best 14-2 season was wrecked in a playoff loss to New England, Spanos cited the exodus of both coordinators and other assistants in firing Schottenheimer, who had a year left on his contact.

"The process of dealing with these coaching changes convinced me that we simply could not move forward with such dysfunction between our head coach and general manager," Spanos said in a statement. "In short, this entire process over the last month convinced me beyond any doubt that I had to act to change this untenable situation."

The bigger shock was keeping him to begin with. I guess once they lost both Cam Cameron and Wade Phillips, the Chargers management didn't have enough faith in Marty.

I don't understand why the GM is considered more important than the coach? Anybody can go out and get the players. Coaching makes the difference between good and great teams. Coaches usually make more money than the GM.

Wow. Marty may be jinxed in the playoffs but he know 's how to build teams. I'd take him over Wade Phillips anyday. S.D. waited to long now because I don't know what coaches are left. Maybe Norv Turner. lol

I'm so tired of coaches getting fired everytime a team doesn't do well. I know the Chargers were supposed to go farther in the playoffs this year because they had the best record in the AFC but Schottenheimer shouldn't have been fired. I saw on ESPN today that he didn't get along with the GM so that's why he was fired. I can understand that. If a coach doesn't get along with the GM, there's no point in staying with a team who doesn't respect you.
