You cannot make this stuff up!

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Woonsocket mother and her boyfriend are headed to trial on charges they had intercourse in front of the woman's 9-year-old daughter as a way to teach the girl about sex.

Rebecca Arnold, of Woonsocket, and her boyfriend, David Prata, have pleaded not guilty to felony child-neglect charges. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for next month.

When questioned by an investigator from the state Department of Children, Youth and Families, Prata, 33, said he and Arnold, 36, had sex "all the time" in front of the child and that "we don't believe in hiding anything."

He said the girl would often be on the bed watching as the couple had sex. Though they did not ask her to leave, they also did not force her to remain on the bed, Prata said.

Asked why he thought a child that age should know about sexual acts, Prata replied, "We wanted to prepare her so she would know how," according to a report from the investigator, Vanessa E. Cisela.

...Wow. I have no words for this. Except to laugh.

Does this make me a horribly deranged bitch, or something? *cackle*

...Although I will admit that I want to bitchslap the mother and her boyfriend. I wouldn't want to watch my mom having sex with somebody else. That's a private thing.

See, IMO people like this should have thier parental rights taken away.

You have no idea what you are doing. You are idiots.

Also, since the guy involved in this is the "boyfreind" and not the father, it just seems to me like he probably would have turned his attention to the girl eventually.

Again, they are idiots. They should not be allowed to be parents.

That's like one of those "scared straight" programs, only for teaching sex.

It may not necessarily screw the child up. In the Conversations With God books, God remarks that He doesn't see anything wrong with children being made aware of sex.

Some quotes from God's dialogue from the second book:

"In some societies, parents couplein full view of their offspring - and what could give children a greater sense of the beauty and the wonder and the pure joy and the total okayness of the sexual expression of love than this? For parents are constantly modelling the "rightness" and "wrongness" of all behaviours, and children pick up subtle and not-so-subtle signals from their parents about everything through what they see their parents thining, saying and doing."

"So talk about sex with your children, laugh about sex with your children, teach them and allow them and remind them and show them how to celebrate their sexuality."

Now, admittedly, I wouldn't want to watch my parents have sex, and it is very unusual to do it in front of your child. But it may not necessarily screw the child up. If she has become aware of sexuality and comfortable with it from a very early age, then she may develop a very healthy attitude towards sex when she is older, and she may not see it as a shameful act.

Yeah, when did God say this and to whom?

You should teach your children about sex, like you should teach them about a lot of things in the world. You don't demonstrate each act though.

That is just plain stupid, wrong, and pretty much unconscionable.
If anyone has to look up that word, then don't have kids just yet.

Yeah, when did God say this and to whom?

The quotes are from the second book in the Conversations With God series. (There are three.) They're by Neale Donald Walsch and the second one was published in 1997.

The three books are transcriptions of conversations that the author says he had with God. Of course, there are some people who think he made it up, or was just imagining, but I believe that God did speak to him and that these are accurate transcriptions of his conversations with God. There is a lot of helpful, comforting stuff in the books, and I find quite a lot of stuff I agree with.

For instance, in one of the books, God talks about life after death. He says there's no such thing as Hell. He says He doesn't judge or punish people, and that when people die, they create their own reality.

And people say that gay couples shouldn't have children...

Were these "parents" planning to drink and do drugs in front of the girl to teach her about the evils of alcohol and drugs?

I wouldn't be surprised. For what they did is extremely way out of line. One can teach sex education to a teen-ager but for someone who's only nine? It's like they're forcing the kid to watch porn against ones will.

I actually believe this couple had good intentions.

Granted, their method was very unconventional, and, from my own perspective, I wouldn't want to watch my own parents do that, I think it's very possible that it won't have an adverse effect on the child.

I think it is possible that if she's watched her parents do it, then she'll see that sex is a positive, loving and altogether good thing to do, so therefore she won't feel ashamed of it, and may well have a very healthy attitude towards sex.

I'm not saying this definitely will happen, but it's possible. It might have a good effect on her.

Well, for one, it's an adult activity, that's why adult movies come with an R-rating (or 18 here). Being unashamed of the human body is one thing, but what they did is quite another. Children of that age are not mentally or physically equipt to deal with real life activities of that sort, explaining it to them is one thing, but making them witness it is something else entirely.

Secondly, it could be very dangerous in terms of sexual abuse by others. If the child is lead to believe that sex is no big deal, then he/she may not realise that an abuser is doing them wrong.

Plus, you know how cruel other kids can be. Can you imagine the hard time they'd get at school if the other kids found out.

Good points, I hadn't considered those. Was the child actually being forced to watch, though? Or was she free to leave, if she wanted?

She was probably a bit young, but I think if done in a good way, something like that might end up being a positive thing. The child gets to see that sex is okay and nothing to be ashamed of, but the parents could also impress upon them the dangers of sexual predators and abusers.

I also want to add that the young girl could possibly try to have sex with another child all because her parents were trying to teach or show her. People need to be aware that kids listen and also DO what they see their parents doing.

I think the couple meant well but they went about it the wrong way. She's 9 not 29. They should have taught her little by little not go at it in front of her. They could have talked with other parents, counselors or therapist on how to talk to their daughter about sex.
