Did you like Mickys hair better in the early days or do you prefer his afro-style
hair later on in the show?

I liked the early years look.

i don't know i think he looked pretty good with both hair styles i mean his was the only one that hair changed you know! which kinda confussed me a little bit cause his hair would change so much even in the later eps i think he must have had it permed or something like that! or tesed it up or something! but anyway yeah i think i like his hair not curly!

Yeah that big hair was kind of distracting but I guess he must have liked it.

His hair was naturally curly and he used to have it straightened in the early days and eventually just got tired of doing that. He started to grow it out between seasons and in the second season there are episodes where his hair is still parted a bit, some where its combed back, and others with the afro. This is because the shows weren't aired in the order they were filmed. If you look at them in production order you can see how his hair gradually changes.

The funniest example to me is in the second season opener "Its a Nice Place to Visit" where his hair is slicked back for the story yet in the musical number sequence where you see them playing the song, he has the fro. This is becasue these musical sequences were all shot either on one day or in a few consecutive days at a studio here in Chicago I believe.

I never knew that; I had wondered how it changed so often, .

I've been reading the Monkees diary and wanted to forward some more info on the 'hair' thread.

So for season two, they started to film it in April of 1967, five months before its debut. Those episodes filmed (in order) are The Picture Frame, Art, For Monkees Sake, Monkees Blow Their Minds, Everywhere a Sheik Sheik, The Devil and Peter Tork, 99lb Weakling, Monkees Marooned, Monkees Watch Their Feet, Its a Nice Place to Visit, and Monkee Mayor. This initial filming of 10 episodes was completed by early June while the Monkees prepped for their summer tour.

Later in the month, they filmed Monkees In Paris and you can see his hair is getting longer and starting to curl more. When they filmed the videos in the rainbow room in early August (which were filmed here in Chicago BTW) Micky had the curly hair. When production resumed on the series proper in September of '67 with "Hillbilly Honeymoon" Micky has it as well.

By the time the second season premiered, the episodes didn't air in the order they were filmed which is why he has the fro in some and doesn't in others. I always get a kick out of Its a Nice Place to Visit because aside from the musical number of "Hangin' Round" Micky's hair is obviously longer and slicked back in the rest of the episode.

The weird thing about that is the episode Monkees Blow Their Minds which I find to be one of the weaker ones (along with Monkees Race Again), it seems like it was filmed later than it was in the series. Just my opinion.

I did wonder if maybe he had worn a wig but I guess he didn't. It sounds like
alot of interesting info in that Monkees Diary.

Just to make sure in case you are looking for it, the book is just called "The Monkees" by Andrew Sandoval. It goes into a day by day description of what they did in the 60's. Its a very good read and reference.

I always liked the second season of the Monkees better than the first. To me, the first season was too "clean". In the second season, their clothes were more in line with the end of the 1960s. More "hippy" as they would say. I think Davy in the second season was really handsome. Oh, yes now the question, I liked Micky's afro-type hair and the tablecloth top he wore while playing the drums in that rainbow type stage.
