When MASH was origionally on the air, how did certain people (like conservatives) respond to Klinger's cross-dressing? I can see people making a stink out of Klinger's character.
Personally, I think Klinger is pretty tame and normal compared to so many current TV characters.
I don't think there would have been a major uproar. I mean, Klinger wasn't a transexual or gay; he just wanted to get out of the Army by making people think he was nuts, and dressing up as a woman was his idea of crazy.
Actually, i would think that transvestites would have a problem with Klinger.
Transvetities don't think dressing up like a woman is crazy. I'm surprized in the litigeous society we live in today, some transvestite rights group hasn't sued to have M*A*S*H taken off the air.

When MASH was a prime-time show, or thereafter, I never remember anyone making a big issue about this. Knowing, as was mentioned, that he used this as a ruse to get out of the army, just made people think it was funny.
(Last night, I saw a rerun of MASH where this one sergeant was going around trying to get enlisted people to re-enlist. Well Klinger had just gotten a "Dear John" letter (or "Dear Max", I should say--from his ex) The sergeant was trying to capitalize on Klinger's depressed state to get him to re-up. Klinger's reaction to his ex's letter showed some pretty normal moods.)

He wasn't actually GAY. If he was, that would have been a sticking point.
