Spies Like Us Headed For A Remake

There's a stage of life that no one ever talks about, and that's the stage at which you are first faced with a remake of a film you first saw in theaters -- not something that came out in the 1930s. That's what I'll be dealing with if this proposed remake of John Landis's Spies Like Us actually gets produced.

According to Movie Hole, the film is at Warner Brothers who will be teaming up with Imagine Entertainment and Thunder Road. The screenplay will be written by Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and Dave Mandel, a writing trio with Euro Trip, The Cat in the Hat, and many episodes of Seinfeld to their collective credit (or shame depending on your perspective).

The 1985 film dealt with two low-level CIA operatives (Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase) thrust into a mission of global importance. It will be interesting to see how the story is updated, as the original relied heavily on the nuclear arms race and cold war politics. I feel much the same about this project as I did about the proposed remake of Weird Science.

The original Spies Like Us is no classic in any sense of the word, which is one of the reasons I think a re-imagining might be a good idea. There's no golden idol to tarnish here, and it is well within the realm of possibility that they could improve upon the original

They must be getting desperate. I haven't seen this movie probably since seeing it in the theater when it came out. I remember liking it at the time, but it was hardly an all-time classic.

Hollywood needs to invest in some creativity and stop these tired remakes. This is why I seldom go to the movies anymore and enjoy very little of what I do rent.

My sentiments exactly, plus Hollywood has hit an all time low.

What's next?? Police Academy Reloaded?? Johnny Dangerously???

It's bad enough when they remake classics, but now they're just grasping at anything, really.

Yet another movie remake I won't be watching in the theatres, on DVD, or even late night on some third rate cable network...
