He has been gay in private. While in the NBA, at least. If he came out of the closet while being a player, all of the 6th grade educated NBA players would have been all, "Ewwww you're gay, I don't like you lol."

And the reason he came out, is probably either he didn't feel like living a lie anymore, or $$$ for his book.

He could have came out the closet but not tell the Media about it. He's Gay, who cares. It's not like he was a NBA star, he was John Amachei-lol

I think he did this to send the message be proud of what or who you are. A couple of other athletes have admited they're gay after playing. The only one that comes to mind is Sheryl Swoops admitted she was a lesbian. Also a couple of retired NFL players have admitted also that they are gay.

Like I said, maybe he felt like it was something he needed to do. He played in front of millions of people, maybe he felt like he needed to let millions of people know. And again, it could be for promoting his book.

And yeah, he definitely was not a star. I was looking up his NBA profile, and the guy shot like 40% from the field. How does a big man shoot so poorly? It's not like he attempted a lot of 3s.

To be fair, someone from the WNBA coming out of the closet as a lesbian would be like someone from the NBA coming out of the closet as a pot smoker.

I think he did it just to **** you off Solomon! :lol Just kidding.

Maybe he wants to be a role model of some sort. Who knows. He probably couldn't come out earlier because he did have to share showers and private time with his team.

He felt the need to come out in public because he was probably tired of hiding it. Hiding one's sexuality is painful and very stressful and when they finally come out, it feels like a weight is finally lifted off of their shoulders.

Because "coming out" is all the rage these days.
If he didn't announce it and just lived his life, he wouldn't feel important or validated.

I agree with Solomon. John Amaechi should've kept that to himself that he's gay. That's not the public's business to know. He also shouldn't have written a book about it. Who cares. I could care less what a person does behind closed doors even though i don't like gays LOL. I will never understand men being gay. How can a man be attracted to another man? That's disgusting hahahahahahahahahahaha. There are so many beautiful women.

Honestly I hate to say this but I think he came out to generate more publicity for his upcoming book where he talks about his experiences of being a gay NBA player. More publicity ='s more $$$$. It's funny how his announcement coincieded with his upcoming book release. I think he mentioned in an interview how when he played for Utah coach Jerry Sloan referred to him using a derogatory gay term even though Sloan never knew he was gay. I think Amaechi also would rather come out publicly and personally rather then have somebody read it in his book or catch him publicly.

I think he came out because felt like it was the right time especially since he is retired. Just imagine how long he's been gay and had to hide it and now he probably feels free. Sheryl Swoops came out and she's not even retired. I think it differs for different people.

Suddenly, all that preaching you do about "ignorant blacks" seems kind of ironic.

 True. The shocking news out of the WNBA is when someone accounces that they're straight!

I think it is admirable that he comes out and says it since people don't expect pro athletes to be gay. It shows that gay men can be professional athletes too.

I also think it is important for his book. Isn't it the main point of his book since he wasn't a very famous NBA player.

Some of ya'll dissing WNBA female athletes are ignorant. Why do WNBA players have to be gay just because they're women playing basketball? Sheryl Swoopes is the only gay WNBA player to tell the public about her sexuality even though she should've kept that to herself. I admit there are some manly looking WNBA players but that doesn't mean that they have to be gay.
