Mark-Paul Gosselaar has busted law-breakers, assisted law-makers and now he's getting ready to practice law himself.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the "Saved by the Bell" star has booked a lead role in an untitled CBS drama about the lives of Los Angeles public defenders. The series, from Barry Schindel ("Numbers"), also features Janeane Garofalo.

Gosselaar will play a privileged young attorney who opts for a gig in the public defenders office rather than taking the opportunity to run for Congress.

After a career rejuvenating stint on "NYPD Blue," Gosselaar became a guest star on ABC's "Commander in Chief." His other TV credits include "DC" and "Hyperion Bay."

In other CBS pilot news, Oscar nominated director Stephen Frears ("The Queen") has been signed to helm the network's Stephen Dorff pilot "Skip Tracer." Dorff stars and will executive produce the drama, which focuses on a man who finds people who are trying to disappear.

Frears previous worked with CBS on the network's 2000 live "Failsafe" with George Clooney.

I've got mixed feelings about this... I like crime/legal shows- The Practice when it was on, Shark, Law & Order, etc. and would give this show a good shot, but I can't stand Janeane Garofalo. I guss you can alway shave characters you root for and against....

Does anyone know anything about this show? I don't remember anything like this starring Mark-Paul in reading the networks' lineups for fall/winter replacements for next year. Did it just get scrapped?
