What is your feeling about double sided DVD's? Personally, I hate them. For one, they don't mark them clearly enough to tell which side is which. Another reason I hate them is that I have a DVD changer. It holds 400 dvd's. When they double side them, I can't load them and leave them there because to see the other side, I'd have to pull the dvd out and flip them over. It's not the end of the world, but it kinda defeats the purpose of the dvd changer. What's with the studio's? How much money are they saving? Personally, I'd pay the extra buck or 2 to get the dvd's single sided. The other drawback is, if you break or lose a double sided dvd, you've in fact broken or lost 2 dvd's. Do this bother anyone else? or is it just me?

The King of The Hill boxsets are like that and i hate it! It's confusing I think. :mad:

they are crap - especially the double-layer double-sided disks, i haven't had a set with those yet that DIDN'T have at least one disk that freezes up or won't play.

I agree. Worst idea in the world. Warner Bros. was almost going to do this with 3 of there releases, but changed them last minute to 4 single sides discs, thank god. The double sided discs scratch easily, are confusing to see which side is which, and are not colorful as single sided.

I hate those too. They scratch easy. When I got Knight Rider sea 1 I diddnt realize that the dvd's were double sided and i skipped a crap load of episodes! But I don't have many dvd's like that.

Joan of Arcadia S2 discs are single-sided, so at least you don't have to worry about those, especially when you don't pay for it.

I cant stand these! They can get marked up so much easier then the one sided ones.

I don't have too many double sided DVD's. My only TV-DVD is the Simple Life 4. They don't mark which side is which clearly enough at all. I can barely make out which side is A or B. I definitely prefer single sided discs.

Personally, I think it is someone in the technology department becoming overzealous about something new in dvd without testing its quality. They are so quick to release something like that solely on the strength of the money they might save without taking into consideration that dvd-buyers will not be happy with the release.

I hate double sided dvd's, especially the dual layer double sided ones. I much prefer single sided and do not care if it runs to 9 discs (like some of the Dukes of Hazzard sets do). Of course, Universal is the worst as their quality control is non-existant. I have had endless trouble with Adam 12, Dragnet 1967, The Munsters, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents - Season 1.

I do like the single layer DVD's, but I have no problems with the double sided ones. My Dukes of Hazzard Season 1 set is like this, plus some Wrestling DVD's I have, I think its cool to have 2 DVD's in 1.

yes, you are right, I forgot about the munsters being double sided. I have them loaded in my changer, but I am going to pull out all the double sided dvd's so I can flip them over easier.

Count me in as one of the double-sided dvd haters-they stink! I have a 6 disc changer so it does kind of defeat the purpose like an earlier poster said of having the changer. Watching sitcoms this way is not so bad because I just play one side of each all the way through and then flip them over. But tv shows with a story arch are the worst like Dallas. What I end up doing is watching one disc, flipping over and watching the other side and then skipping to the next disc and then the same thing. But it is a drag. I noticed on my Munsters double-sided dvds that there is fluttering on the sides and my disc player becomes noisier than normal. I will be glad when the industry gives up on them. I have never had any freeze up on me though so I have been lucky that way. Well that is my gripe for the day. Thank you and good night.

Count me in as a hater. I also have a dvd changer (5 discs) so like you guys said it defeats the purpose. Also, it is easier to get finger prints or scratch them. Not to mention the fact that most of the time I can't figure out what side is what.

ok, if a studio is set on using double sided dvd's, i would think it would make more sense to do the following:

on a multi-dvd set, take all the episodes and put them in order. for example, episodes 1-6 on disk 1, side 1. episodes 7-14 on disk 2, side 1. 15-21 on disk 1 side 2, 22-28 on disk 2 side 2.

this would allow us to load them in a changer and at least watch a decent amount non-stop without flipping. seems to me this is logical, but then i guess the majority of people don't have a changer, so for them it would be a pain. best solution is to stop cheaping out and put them on single sided dvd's.

The FOX Home Entertainment releases of "Dynasty" S1, "Hill Street Blues" S1 and S2, and "St. Elsewhere" S1 (all of which I have) are double-sided, whereas the Sony releases of S1 and S2 of "Hart to Hart" (I have these also) are single-sided. It would stand to reason, then, that if you buy a FOX Home Entertainment series, whether it be from Aaron Spelling ("Dynasty" S1) or MTM ("Hill Street Blues" S1-S2 and "St. Elsewhere" S1), you're more than likely looking at double-sided discs.

I don't like them.Their cheaply made and they freeze up too bad.I got lucky with Emergency S2 it didn't but S1 did and I had to swap it.Universal put Emergency S3 on single sided disc so maybe their getting the message.

I wish "The Addams Family" set would be rereleased with single discs.

I dislike double sided DVD's also, but fortunately I haven't had a problem with any of them not playing. TV shows with double sided DVD's that I have in my collection are- Addams Family, Munsters, Gilligan's Island, and each season of The Flintstones has one double sided DVD, the rest are single sided. I also have The Time Tunnel and The White Shadow DVD's from Fox studios which are double sided, and My Favorite Martian DVD seasons 1 and 2 from Rhino have most episodes on double sided discs. I might have a few more but those are the ones I can think of right now.

I'm not a fan of the double-sided style of DVDs either... But, I will say I've not had any trouble with the ones I own, at least none of those that I've watched them all the way thru... I did buy "The Munsters" Season One when it was firct out, and as mentioned in older posts, that was on double-sided discs... I didn't buy Season Two back when it first came out, but last year at Walmart, the had the complete series (with two "Munsters" movies) so I picked that up and it was nice to see that they were on single-sided DVDs...

I do know you have to be extra careful when handling them, which I am, but I bought two seasons of "Leave it to Beaver" used from eBay and the previous owner left a few fingerprints and some scratches on a couple of them, so they don't play as well as they should due to that...

I've got some ancient flipper movie dvds (some are like a laser disc with half the movie on each side) that still play perfectly today. I do worry about my tv on dvd flippers going kaput and being out of print so I can't replace them.

I never had a problem with playing the double-sided discs in my dvd players. But when my dvd drive on my desktop stopped working I had to buy a Dell external dvd burner and they won't play on it, the one sided dvd's play fine though.

Then there's some good news coming-- the Dallas releases are being redone as singles, and will be released at the bottom of this month (all 14 seasons' worth); the tradeoff is that the bonuses that were on a good many of the original double releases will probably not be included. It's all a matter of what you want-- do you want the doubles with the bonuses (I take it you don't), or do you want these soon-to-be-released redos, possibly without the bonuses?

If you dislike double-sided disks I have a solution, BACK THEM UP. If you don't have a program I strongly recommend getting 123CopyDVDPlatnum. It LAUGHS at "Copy Protection" encriptions. :rofl: It can take a little over an hour to make each backups, so you'll have to be patient. However, once you're done you have the series all on SINGLE SIDED DISKS! :D You can put the flippers in "cold storage" and play the backups, and if something goes wrong with a backup you can make a new copy o replace it. :thumbsup:

Sorry, this is off-topic: Would I then have an un-copy protected disc, so I could copy it onto my DVD recorder's hard drive? (I won't bore you with the reason I want to do that.)

123CopyDVDPlatnum has a way to make a copy on a hard drive drive, once again copy protection would not interfere with this. ;)
