View Full Version : These were the QB's that had WORST performances than Rex Grossman in the SB
TVFactFan 02-06-2007, 12:38 PM Craig Morton of Denver in 78
John Elway in 1990
Kerry Collins in 2000
Jim Kellly in 1991
Don't know why ESPN felt the need to bring that to everyone's attention like they are a Chicago Cable station-lol
Tweety 02-06-2007, 10:04 PM It's because ESPN is determined to give 100% of the blame for this loss to Rex Grossman, and none to Lovey Smith, who was badly outcoached by Dungy.
ESPN would be silent if Donovan McNabb had the same game Grossman had. They proved this when McNabb threw three picks against Carolina in the NFC title game in 2003... as soon as that game was over, ESPN was falling all over themselves explaining how McNabb's receivers couldn't hold on to the ball, and how his receivers didn't "run the right routes". Earlier that day, ESPN was all over Peyton Manning for throwing 3 (or maybe 4) picks against the Patriots in the AFC title game.
Your list (or ESPN's list) of bad Super Bowl performances was a good start, but how about:
Other bad QB Super Bowl performances:
Fran Tarkenton, 1975,Super Bowl IX (vs Steelers) 11-26 102 yds 0 TD 3 Int
Billy Kilmer 1973, Super Bowl VII (vs Dolphins) 14-28 104 yds 0 TD 3 Int
Earl Morral 1969 Super Bowl III (vs. Jets) 6-17 71(!) yds 0 TD 3 Int
Those have to be as bad as Grossman's 20-28 165 yds 1 TD / 2 Int
I felt bad for Grossman...Poor Rex even completed a pass on 4th and 9 on the Bears' last drive, but that pathetic receiver dropped a perfect pass... big deal if he was hit, you're still supposed to hold on to the ball.
Grossman outplayed Brees and Hasselbeck to get to the Super Bowl... and halfway through the season, he was being touted as an MVP candidate (no one said he'd win it, but a ton of sportswriters were throwing his name around).
The Bears were beaten by a better team. And I wouldn't blame Grossman for the Bears' inability to keep the Colts offense off the field for 40 minutes of that game... (granted, Grossman, didn't engineer much in the way of long drives himself when he did have the chance though).
But the blame being heaped on Grossman (and no one else) is ridiculous.

I don't think he would have received he blame if he didn' throw TWO HAILMARYS in the 4th Qtr that led to INT-lol Those were AWFUL passes and you never just throw the ball up in the air like that and hope something hhappens-lol

Not to mention fumbling the snap and tripping over his own feet. LOL
Tweety 02-07-2007, 08:04 AM It is true that the two INTs were bad. But jeez, is Grossman the only QB to ever throw a couple of interceptions in a Super Bowl?
The fact that ESPN is trying to make Grossman's performance look like an all time top 5 worst in SB history is a joke. Any one of the players we've lister here were every bit as bad as Grossman was, or worse.
And I think that McNabb WOULD get a free pass from ESPN if he had the game Grossman had... I know that because it's already happened (just in the NFC title game, not the Super Bowl, though).
There has never been a game in SB history in which a QB received 100% of the blame for a loss from the media, including the poor performances we've listed here. In all of these other cases, there was always plenty of blame to go around, but never has a QB been blamed for a loss to the exclusion of not only EVERYONE else on his ENTIRE team (on BOTH sides of the ball), but the ENTIRE coaching staff as well.
Heck, Brian Urlacher is the best inside LB in the game today, but where was HE on Sunday? Peyton Manning literally TOYED with him at the LOS all day long. Urlacher did nothing. I'm not hearing too much about who won THAT particular match-up though.
The entire Bears defense let Indy run the ball...and run the ball...and run the ball... it was a joke to watch them trying to make a tackle...
Grossman really had no business even being in the Super Bowl... but he made the play in OT against Seattle, rather than Hasselbeck making the big play, and he outplayed Brees in the NFC title game...
Plus, is there any evidence that Brian Griese would have done any better in that slop? HE'S never won anything.
Grossman had a bad game...but he wasn't the only one.
Tweety 02-07-2007, 08:08 AM Where's my boy Tony Eason??? ;)
  Eason! You're exactly right... He was the first starting quarterback in Super Bowl history not to complete a pass, going 0-for-6 against the "other" Bears Super Bowl team! That had to be THE all time worst!
46 defense or no 46 defense, that was BAD!
ESPN obviously has very short and selective collective memories to not inlcude him.
And all I did in making my short list was check a few early Super Bowls that were basically over by halftime (even though the scores were fairly close).

I love how everyone has jumped on this espn loves dmac & the eagles bandwagon. As an eaglefan, I feel with the exception of the swammy & jaworski, the rest of the network hates them.

What about Tom Jackson? Can't tell me HE hate McNabb.
And let's not even go into how Kornheiser and (especially) Wilbon think of him.

KornHieser and TJ don't like the Eagles, Wilboun and Berman does

I just meant that those guys love McNabb...that was not a comment on whether they liked the Eagles... I know Wilbon's a Bears fan, I'm not sure if Tony K or Berman are "fans" of any particular team at this point in their lives.

Honestly Brian I am not sure THat sal pal " likes the eagles" He is from the area & covers them quite a bit but I am not sure I would put him in the class with the swam & jaws.
Michael Irvin, Merril Hodge, Sean Salisbury, they are more who I was reffering too. Salisbury is very wishy washy though, One moment he says something good, then 5 minutes later he contradicts himself.
mriggles 02-08-2007, 12:36 PM KornHieser and TJ don't like the Eagles, Wilboun and Berman does
Kornheiser has said on more than one occassion that he dislikes the eagles.

I was able to tell beccause he picked against them every week the last 7 weeks of the season-lol

That worked out really well for him eh? LOL

If I worked for ESPN and as much as I hate the Eagles, I would have not picked the Giants in the Wildcard Game. I would have to seperate my feelings and pick the BETTER team
