Not sure if you mean the #1 single at the end of the (calendar) year or the #1 single of the year. When Doves Cry by Prince was Billboard's #1 single of 1984

No matter how hard I try, I can't do anything right. :lol: A poll featuring just the number one song at the end of each year would be rather ridiculous but after reading my initial post again, I can see where there might be some confusion. I got the info from what I thought was a very reliable source who also has recordings of the top 100 year-end countdowns.

I also checked Billboard's site and they back you up. The problem though is that when the AT 40 Top 100 of 1984 show aired, I listened to it and Casey Kasem introduced "Say Say Say" as the number one song of 1984. I have no idea why Billboard claims "Purple Rain" was #1 for that year yet the countdown says differently. The only thing I can figure is that when the countdown was produced, A mistake was made and by the time it reached the stations, It was too late to correct it.
