that episode also served as Harry Morgans audition to replace McLean Stevenson; since shortly before it aired McLean announced he was leaving.
That scene where the two of them are talking about a tounge depressor is the scene where they decided on Harry to replace him.

Yep. The character of Sherman Potter was created expressly with Harry Morgan in mind. No other actors were considered or auditioned for the part, unlike B.J., who other actors did try out for.

McLean Stevenson's career blunder ended up being a boon for Harry Morgan, who knew a good thing when he had it.

I never knew about that episode until the other night. It was weird seeing "Col. Potter" as someone else, and a crazy person no less, lol!!! It was also weird seeing Harry Morgan and McLean Stevenson together.

The General Flipped At Dawn came a few years after Morgan did a film for Disney called Snowball Express. In that film was actress kathy Cody who had been on Dark Shadows. The movie had bits written around her (like a bat coming out of a trunk!). it's possible Morgan freaked after meeting her and suffered crazy trauma for several years and was really off his rocker when he played Steele in this ep. Remember what Conrad Bain (also of Dark Shadows) did to Maclean Stevenson.
