Rowell Asks to Be Released From Y&R
Posted Friday, February 02, 2007 2:31:31 PM

Though the actress is in the midst of a front burner storyline, soapcentral.com has learned that Victoria Rowell (http://www.soapcentral.com/yr/theactors/rowell.php) (Drucilla Winters (http://www.soapcentral.com/yr/whoswho/drucilla.php)) will exit The Young and the Restless this spring.

According to a spokesperson for the award-winning actress, Rowell asked to be let out of her contract early and the show accommodated that request. To some, Rowell's desire to exit might seem oddly timed. Fans may recall that contract negotiations between the actress and network execs went down to the wire just a little over a year ago (http://www.soapcentral.com/yr/news/2005/0829-rowell.php). The terms of that contract were not released.

It is unclear at this time if Rowell is dissatisfied with the direction of her character and storyline or if the actress received an outside offer to work on another project. Rowell's spokesperson declined to comment.

In a poll conducted by soapcentral.com during Rowell's contract talks, nearly two-thirds of respondents indicated that they would not mind if Drucilla was written out.

This is not the first time that Rowell has parted ways with The Young and the Restless. Rowell joined the Y&R cast in March 1990 and remained with the show through 1998. After a brief run in 2000 (http://www.soapcentral.com/yr/news/2000/0918-rowell.php), Rowell left again before returning as a contract player in July 2002 (http://www.soapcentral.com/yr/news/2002/0701-rowell.php).

In addition to her work on The Young and the Restless, Rowell has appeared in the primetime drama series "Diagnosis Murder." She has also graced the silver screen, including the critically acclaimed "Eve's Bayou."

With Rowell's exit confirmed, Y&R viewers have begun to speculate that Drucilla might be behind the death of Carmen Mesta. A CBS spokesperson declined to comment on Rowell's impending exit and gave no indication of the show would attempt to recast the role of Dru.

Rowell will last air in April.

Her acting is definitely over-the-top at times, but enough with the main characters leaving already.

I can't believe Victoria is leaving... Dru has become such an important part of the storyline, I'll definitely miss her... :(

I am completely shocked!

Okay so now we know who killed Carmen, it's Dru!

I have to admit I will miss her over the top acting, she really was funny sometimes.

I also agree enough of characters leaving the show.

Another reason for Victoria's departure may have to do with the upcoming release of her autobiography, The Women Who Raised Me, which will be published in May. Perhaps she wishes to concentrate on publicizing the book and making it a bestseller.
