View Full Version : Favorite Waltons episode (minor spoilers)
catlover79 01-31-2007, 07:33 PM Mine is from season 1, "The Gypsies". Gregory Sierra (Barney Miller, Sanford & Son, Soap) guest stars as the leader of a gyspy family whose caravan breaks down. John-Boy offers to let them stay on their land while they fix the wagon. The family's baby becomes seriously ill but they won't let Grandma help. Of course everything turns out all right in the end. Interesting note: Gregory Sierra and Richard Thomas co-starred in the 1971 film Red Sky at Morning.

catlover79 04-27-2008, 10:32 AM I also enjoyed "The Lie", which featured Hersha Parady (Alice Garvey of LHOP) in a guest role.
Leigh Ann 05-14-2008, 01:44 PM One of my favorites is "The Changeling" from Season 7. I love the effects, and I kind of know how Elizabeth feels in that episode.
cyrus 06-24-2008, 11:52 AM My favorite episodes are The Sinner and The dust bowl cousins.
Torgo 03-16-2009, 01:20 PM A few-
The Dust Bowl Cousins
The Theft
The Braggart(Michael McGreevey who played one of Kurt Russell's friends in the Disney Dexter Riley films plays Hobie)
The Ghost Story
The First Day(Probably my favorite)
The Conflict(parts 1 and 2)
John's Crossroad
The Return(parts 1 and 2, Some useless trivia- these two episodes center around the reopening of a mine then a cave-in resulting in some of the characters getting trapped-- John Crawford who plays Sheriff Bridges co-starred in the horror film The Severed Arm, where he and other friends get trapped in a mine after a cave-in at the beginning. He also appeared in the horror film The Boogens where he and some colleagues are trying to reopen a mine)
Marvo301 03-15-2010, 08:29 PM I have been watching season one of The Waltons on DVD. This morning I watched episode 19, the Gypsies. I noticed this is Monika's favorite episode. (Gee, I wonder why?!?) Actually I like this episode too. It gave the Waltons an opportunity to interact with "outsiders" (i.e. people not from Waltons Mountain). Although the Gypsies seemed unfriendly at first the Waltons generosity and friendly ways did eventually break through the cultural barrier. The actors who played the Gypsies did an excellent job of portraying these proud people. Especially a fellow named Sierra who played the head of the Gypsy family.

Speaking of which, there's an interesting connection. Barry Miller played Gregory Sierra's elder son in this episode (and later went on to star in Saturday Night Fever and Fame). Barry's real-life father Sidney acted opposite Gregory in the S2 episode of Barney Miller, "Rain". Sidney played the awful standup comic who spent the evening in "the cage".

Talk about a small world! I didn't know about this connection. Thanks for pointing it out!
Bonniegirl 09-14-2014, 12:38 AM I had quite a few favorites that I liked , but off hand, any ep. that featured John Boy.;)
Loved the two with Sissy Spacek! OMG the ep where he delivered her baby was awesome. And when he was in love with Jenny and they were on the mountain together pretending they were married and he was singing to her.:) So romantic! ;) John Boy was cute in a way, he had a way with the ladies! :)
And pretty much the early episodes were all really good. I loved the one with the Gypsies. ( Gregory Sierra was great in that) !;)
I also have a special place in my heart for the ep when Chance the cow had a calf, and they had to sell it. Turned out the man who bought it was going to slaughter him for beef, and Jim-Bob and Elizabeth stole the calf . It was so cute and heartwarming, and the calf ended up not getting slaughtered . WAY COOL!!!! ;)
And when Mary Ellen was at the lake and met that older boy and he kissed her, it was her first kiss! :) He thought she was older than she was and came to the house and Grand ma said she was at school with the other children. :( Poor grand ma, she was getting old and didn't mean any harm!
Bonniegirl 09-14-2014, 12:51 AM Oh and the Dust Bowl cousins was Awesome too!!!
Bonniegirl 10-16-2014, 12:06 AM A really weird ep but it was entertaining and a little scary . It was a two parter. Mary Ellen was pregnant and she was already a nurse. A hillbilly girl up in the mountains also was pregnant. The baby was born in the cabin and didn't survive! Mary Ellen was there at the birth. The poor hillbilly girl didn't even realize the baby wasn't alive , than when she was told she was chanting to Mary Ellen . "Look into the eyes of death , and never feel your baby's breath". Over and over again, and TOTALLY freaked Mary Ellen out of course! Than Mary Ellen gave birth to John Curtis soon after, and the hillbilly girl kidnapped him!!!!
Very crazy, intense , cool episode!!!!!!
