In my opinion, no. They were garnering decent ratings, and that is why the show remained on the air.
I have another thing to say. I am so sick of every post you make being about The Jeffersons, or The Jeffersons compared to another show. The Jeffersons wasn't a bad show, and I enjoy watching it today, but does every post have to be about it?

I think they were cashing in on the popularity. Networks are only going to keep the shows on while they are popular unless the show wants to end itself. The Cosby Show and Golden Girls are examples of cases where the network wanted another season but the show opted out to go out strong.
Remember Family Matters was cancelled by ABC in 1997 and the only reason why the diasterous and forgettable 10th season happened is CBS thought they could take over TGIF as the Friday Night Block Party. Notice how short lived that was.

The whole ninth season should never have happened. CBS should have just left the show alone instead of trying to do it there own way. The ratings were beginning to fall since the sixth season. By season 7, the show was out of the top 50, and was even worse the eighth season. Instead of going out strong, they messed up the entire storyline, and took Laura's and Steve's relationship way too far.
The Cosby Show was a great example. By the eighth season, the show fell from #5 to #18. If was givena ninth season, it would have left its entire audience behind, which is what Family Matters did.

Some shows just don't know when to end. FM was a good show but it was never as popular as The Jeffersons were.
