View Full Version : When handing money over to a cashier do you...
Ireneparalegal 01-30-2007, 02:42 PM tend to just give the money over or do you do what I do, fix it and arrange it so the bills are all facing the same direction?
Having been a cashier in my past life, it was annoying to have to fix the bills in an orderly fashion prior to putting them in the cash register. When the drawer needed to be counted at the end of the day, it made it easier to have the money all organized, ready to be counted. So, to make things easier for the cashier I give my money to, I always do that.
Brieannas21 01-30-2007, 03:18 PM When I was in high school I use to work at a clothing store, and I would HATE IT when customers handed me money that was all crinkled and balled up. How do people keep track of money that's balled up in their pockets???? Also I hated when people would throw their money down on the counter.
Anyway to answer your question LOL, I use debit or credit I never carry cash on me anymore. I've gotten to where I hardly write checks anymore.

I think you need to change your screenname to Debit-or-Credit...
Seriously, yeah, those folks that would have this money all bunched up and folded, crinkled, etc. is so unorganized. I mean, I have money (usually dollar bills) like that in my purse, but I don't use those to give to a cashier. I tend to clean out my purse and organize any money that isn't in my wallet.
Chocoholic 01-30-2007, 04:19 PM I tend to use checks or my debit card. I hardly use cash anymore. I find it so cumbersome to handle a lot of cash. Plus, I find it so much easier to keep track of what I spend when I use checks or a debit card.
When I do use cash, I always hand it to the cashier in an orderly fashion. I also worked as a cashier and it really disgusted me when people handed me money that was balled up or even in their shoes or mouth :barf: It also annoyed me when a customer would throw their money at me or put it down on the counter right under my outstretched hand  I think people who do that are usually control freaks or germophobes.

EXACTLY!!!! That was a pet peeve of mine. Who wants to touch money that's been in your nasty sweaty shoe??
80sTrivia 01-30-2007, 05:05 PM Well, I keep all of my bills in sequential order and facing the same direction in my wallet, so that's how I hand them to the cashier. :)
Courtnee 01-30-2007, 05:10 PM I just hand the cashier my money. He/She can fix it if she needs to. That's his/her job.
In the rare instances i do pay cash (my debit card gets quite a workout nowadays) I try to arrange the bills.
I too used to work a register when I was younger, so I remember how important it is to keep the cash in order.
Janice 01-30-2007, 06:11 PM When I do pay with cash, which is almost never these days, I hand it all neat and going in one direction. Most cashiers don't even raise an eyebrow when I pull the bills out of my bra. Kidding.
I hate when they put the money on the counter, especially coins. I've seen both customers and cashiers do this. Just rude.

I know what you mean. It is always courtesy and proper manners to hand cash over in one's hand. When a cashier starts to put it on the counter, I extend my hand so the cashier can't miss it and they get the message that I PREFER THE MONEY BE PUT IN MY HAND, while it gets counted.
That's another thing, I always counted money back to the customers, so they didn't think they were being short-changed and also, so I knew that I was giving back the correct amount. Most cashiers just give bills and coins all bungled up without ever counting it back. How do they know they gave me the proper change?

Tease.

AllIWantIsYourClutch 01-30-2007, 06:35 PM I used to be a cashier and I never put my money in my register facing the same direction. Mainly because I never really understood why that was such a big deal, so I kind of boycotted the act of actually doing it.
Yooch 01-30-2007, 08:04 PM I arrange the bills.
KissMyGrits 01-30-2007, 08:13 PM I always arrange the bills! That is my biggest pet peeve. I too was a cashier and always made sure they were facing the same way.
My husband never puts his money facing the same way! Drives me crazy!! LOL!!
Mr. Television 01-30-2007, 08:55 PM I just hand the cashier my money. He/She can fix it if she needs to. That's his/her job.
That's what I do too.

Me, too!
I was the supervisor of the gift shops at the zoo in town, and I would HATE when the school kids came in and they'd hand me WET balls of money....it'd be all sticky and crumbly. And half the time, they wouldn't know how to count it, so they'd give me way too little and not understand that.
Or, better yet, they'd hand me hand fulls of pennies! Yikes!
Michael [hXc] 01-30-2007, 10:22 PM I have helped my mom work at craft fairs and events like that, and she had this safe full of money. There was a place for dollar bills, pennies, nickles, etc. I was in charge of handling the money and making change, while my mom sold her products. I made sure the bills were arranged in sequential order, all facing the same way. My mom just likes to throw the money into the bin, but I fixed it.
My wallet went through the wash, and got messed up. It was a Boston Red Sox wallet. I always kept my money in order, facing the same direction. I hand the money to a cashier that way, and when playing Monopoly or Life, I STILL have to face all the play money in one direction.
I am obsessed.
dawsongirl 01-30-2007, 10:39 PM Just hand it to them. Most of them have no concept of the money facing the same way, etc anyway. They don't even have a clue of what change should be given. I mean, I don't do math in my head well either, but I can at least get close. Some of these people....eek.
swedeace 01-30-2007, 11:07 PM I am so lazy at this. I am always hastily stashing my bills and change in my purse coin pocket. I hate pulling out my bills and arranging them in front of other people. I never know who's watching me and grab my money or purse. I am always paranoid.
Ooops....my bad.... I misunderstood the question....
Anyway... as far as handing the cashier the money goes, I do straighten the bills for them and place the change above the bills.

When one has to count their own drawer, it saves time and you get to leave faster. Also, when a supervisor had to the count the drawer, the more organized it was, the faster they got done counting it.
I was never short/over in my drawer, part of keeping one's cash drawer organized and making sure you count change helps to keep that in check.
Already Gone 01-30-2007, 11:16 PM I don't like to hand money over when it's all balled up, so I straighten it before I go to the store, counting it as well to make sure I have enough. I hand over the bills and then the change.
Karen* 01-31-2007, 03:52 AM Nope. I never did that either when I was a cashier at the theater.
Dude111 05-13-2026, 07:40 PM I just hand it to them.... They dont even put it in all one way... (I dont think, ill have to look cl0ser next time!)
