Rob Zombie has tapped a relative unknown to take the lead role in his reboot of the "Halloween" franchise.

The "Devil's Rejects" director used the film's official MySpace blog as a forum to announce that Scout Taylor-Compton will play Laurie Strode in his version of "Halloween."

Even casual genre fans will recall that Jamie Lee Curtis played Laurie Strode, the innocent babysitter tormented by Michael Myers, in John Carpenter's 1978 slasher classic. Laurie's exact relationship with the hulking, unkillable Myers was elaborated on throughout the franchise.

The rather quirky cast for Zombie's "Halloween" also includes Malcolm McDowell, Brad Dourif, Udo Keir, William Forsythe, Sheri Moon Zombie, Dee Wallace Stone, Ken Foree and Adrienne Barbeau.

Although her credits include "Sleepover" and "Gilmore Girls," Taylor-Compton is probably better known for her well-publicized disappearance in the summer of 2006. The then-16-year-old actress was reported missing after a fight with her father and stepmother, but turned up two weeks later at a friend's house.

Taylor-Compton also appears in "An American Crime," which recently played at the Sundance Film Festival.

It's a good idea to cast a relative unknown for the role.
These days it's like every horror movie stars some girl from a CW or FOX teen drama.
