i think diver down is probably my favorite album. it wasn't all nosebleed hard rock stuff, it had a good mix of different moods, but valerie bertinelli hadn't totally yokoed the band yet. people don't appreciate diver down enough.

I really like Diver Down too. I know that Eddie, Alex and Mike don't much care for it, but I like it. "Where Have All the Good Times Gone", "Pretty Woman" and "Dancing In the Streets" are three of my favorite cover songs. I think that it is an underrated album. I hate the album cover though. :lol:

man, wish i could applaud on this message board.

the cover was weak -- wasn't it, like, a semiphore flag or something? -- but i remember i had the vinyl back in the day and it had a cool foldout, a bunch of b&w concert pix. you know, dave doing his jumping splits and eddie van with that custom guitar and that ugly drummer dude. i used to sit there in teen heaven, flippin' through the little foldout and listening to the album over and over. good times.

it's weird how artists hardly ever like their own most interesting albums. i think i read somewhere metallica hates "and justice for all"... what the heck! that's their pinnacle! after that they sorta sucked.

oops, hijack alert. never mind, forget i brought that up, cuz the metallica sellout controversy is a whole nother can of worms. but my point is, artists a lot of times hate their own best albums. it's a weird phenomenon.

I didn't get into Van Halen until 1984 came out (when their videos made them MTV royalty) so when Diamond Dave left the band I probably wasn't as broken up as fans from the beginning were.

I probably had more "Van Hagar" albums in my cassette collection then DLR era albums, but IMO both eras of Van Halen had some great music.

"Up for Breakfast" is an unusual choice, Monika, but a good one. "Dreams" is a great song. I think that is Sammy at his all time best. He put so much emotion and feeling into his vocal. Also, did you know that the accustic guitar on "Ice Cream Man" is played by Dave and not Eddie? When I saw the band live last October and last May, Dave played the accustic guitar on that song and when he was warming up he was telling us in the audiance how his mom was from Chicago. :) He played the accusitc guitar on the album version of the song as well.
