The fill in squares were gone!
(Or at the very least, my station went to a commercial just before they would have appeared had they been included!) Barry's ad-libbed lines, "Won't be eating this tonight, and he was in 34th place too." were included. As you know, TV Land omits those final lines.
Let me just answer what I know:
1.) For years, syndication showed fill-in squares for this episode. The Brady Bunch has been a nationally syndicated property since the early 70's even when the last two seasons were still going through their original run.
2.) When TV Land acquired the rights to the show in the Summer of 1998, they got the show from Paramount and Paramount did their own edits to fill a syndicated under 22 minute slot. The episode (along with Love and the Older Man) had the squares so:
What happened to the squares? Paramount obviously had them archived because they gave the rights to TV Land. They would also have the 16mm/35mm back up prints so if they got damaged (very unlikely) Paramount could have used the back up fill-in squares.
