View Full Version : Keeping Up Appearances...one of the best!!! bettypat 01-28-2001, 06:13 PM I absolutly love this show, just wish they had done more of them, I have watched everyone of them on PBS and cant get enough of it!!! Devastation26 01-28-2001, 10:52 PM I agree ------------------ Andy: C'Mon Ms. Garrett, throw us a song. Ms. G.: Born in the U.S.S.R. Onefocus 02-06-2001, 04:47 AM It's okay. Hyacinth reminds me so much of my landlady. Looks like her, acts like her, is as punctual as her, goes overboard on etiquette and is NOSY! Just take away the British accent, and you'd swear it was my landlady! And yes, I've watched all the episodes, and yes so has my landlady. She thinks it's the greatest! AGREE 02-22-2001, 11:22 PM It really is such a great show. I use to watch it with my grandmother when she was alive because she liked it, and I got hooked! I watch it every nite! The actress who plays Hyacinth is SO good. I saw her on some mystery show too. I love how they call each other Our Rose, Our Hyacinth, etc. cdance 04-07-2001, 08:31 AM I agree. One of my all-time favorite series! I did discover that "Our Rose" died a couple of years ago. I was very sad to learn that. I saw an interview with Patricia Routledge {Hyacinth} and she indicated no more would be made, as she didn't want people growing tired of the characters and the show, and saying "Oh, is THAT still on??!!" She is very good as Hetty Wainthroppe, but she will really always be Hyacinth to me. She is such an accomplished actress, which I also learned from the interview, and WHAT a GREAT singing voice she actually has!! TVLanFan 06-05-2001, 07:13 PM Totally agree! Keeping Up Appearances is ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!! KUA is, IMHO, totally the funniest show on TV today by far. And Mary Millar (Rose) did pass away in November of 1998... Here's a website about this fabulous show http://britcoms.com/kua/ QueenBee 07-26-2001, 11:23 AM Hi, I let you, all KUA fans..The KUA bulletion boards just moved to another new BB's site. http://pcmedicnet.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi Have a nice day! wren 08-02-2001, 07:11 PM I love Hyacinthe, she makes me laugh every single time!!! One of my favorites is when she 'sings at' her male neighbor; I also love it when people see her coming they hide! LOL [This message has been edited by wren (edited 08-02-2001).] JoPol_wannabe 08-22-2001, 01:00 AM I just love this show it's awsome! I love it when Hyacinth has people over and then her fmaily comes over in that car oh that car I love it when they turn off the car and it makes that loud bang that is so funny and then Hyacinth tryes to get them to leave that is halirious. But I really do feel sorry for poor old Richard all that he has to put up with. My favorite ep is when Hyacinth goes to this auction and has some goosberry wine and gets drunks and says The Dauga ladies homemade Goosberry mine, that line gets me every time. Jesse from S.F. 08-26-2001, 04:18 AM K.U.A. is one the funniest Sitcoms I have ever seen! It always has me in stiches laughing! When I went to England a couple of months ago, I popped on the T.V., and saw American T.V. shows on Brit channels! Here in the U.S., we get Brit comedies on the PBS stations only---too bad, were missing on a lot of great stuff. We need a British channel added to our cable. Why are British T.V. shows only shown in PBS and not anywhere else? 17Mar59 01-17-2002, 09:08 PM That is a good question, why are Britcoms shown only on PBS? brypie 01-21-2002, 03:32 PM I recently got the BBA America on cable and they show different Britcoms on there, including KUA. It's weird though beacuse they have commericals. Anyway, some of my favorite Hyacinth moments are when she is being chased by something or someone. wren 01-21-2002, 10:44 PM I always laughed whenever she went to visit Onslow because there was a dog in the car outside that always barked at her and did she ever jump and look with such disgust. It was hilarious! Blair85 04-07-2002, 01:11 AM I love this show too. I think it's very sad that the lady who played rose died! They are all good actors/actresses! I think I've seen all the episodes on PBS & now I've got BBC America & it's on there too. Always remember Hiacynth, Hyicinth (sp?) answering the phone & yelling, "Bucket residence, lady of the house speaking!!!!!" 17Mar59 04-07-2002, 10:29 PM My parents like this show.I perfer Are You Being Served? btw:Has anyone heard of a show called Barbara? They are showing it now on Saturdays after Keeping Up Appearances in Spokane. 80sTrivia 05-23-2002, 11:14 PM Oh my gawd!!! I love Keeping Up Appearances!!! Hyacinth Bucket is such a hoot!!! My fave characters after Hyacinth are Daisy and Onslow... such dead beat slobs!!! And I feel so sorry for Richard for having to put up with it all. Not to mention poor Elizabeth from next door... will she ever be able to finish a cup of coffee without spilling it all over Hyancinth's rug or dropping her Royal Doulton with the handpainted periwinkles? Blair85 05-24-2002, 06:24 PM Originally posted by 80sTrivia Oh my gawd!!! Daisy & Onslow are like British rednecks he,he! I haven't seen this show on BBC America for a long time. Will it be on again sometime? 80sTrivia 05-24-2002, 08:28 PM Hi Blair!!! I don't know if KUA will be rerun on BBC/America or not. It is currently running on PBS. My local PBS affiliate runs the show on Saturday nights, at 9:00PM, Eastern time. I'd check my local PBS listings to see if it is shown in your area!!! Blair85 05-24-2002, 10:27 PM Originally posted by 80sTrivia Hi Blair!!! I don't know if KUA will be rerun on BBC/America or not. Well hey there 80sTrivia! I hope KUA returns to BBC America cause I don't have PBS anymore. On our local PBS channel it came on Saturdays I think @ 9:30 AM. 80sTrivia 06-05-2002, 01:58 PM My fave episode of KUA is when Richard and Hyacinth go to the golf resort where "Dicky" is supposed to play a round with the Colonel. Of course, Rose just so happens to be staying at the lodge, entertaining a gentlemen friend of hers and rather noisely at that! The Colonel takes Hyacinth on a ride in the country in his roadster where he can't keep his hands off her. Hyacinth finally manages to escape from his embrace and hops over a fence into a pasture, as a flock of sheep start fleeing from her in fear!!! Classic... Tweety 06-09-2002, 11:48 AM I think that KUA is as good as ANY show that's ever been on TV. The characters are amazing. And so many great running gags...my two favorite running gags are: (1) Hyacynth having Elizabeth over for coffee...Poor Elizabeth is always either spilling the coffee, dropping her cup, or dropping her "biscuit" into her cup, and then trying to pick it out with her fingers...IMHO, the scenes in which these two get together for coffe is as good as anything Lucy and Ethel ever did, and I love I.L.Lucy. My other favorite running gag takes place whenever Hyacynth and Richard visit Onslow and Daisy's place...I LOL whenever Hyacynth walks up to the house and that dog sticks its head out of the car window and starts barking at Hyacynth, forcing her to fall back into the hedge... And, of course, there's always Hyacynth lecturing Richard when he drives ("mind the pedestrian, Richard"...Richard: "Minding the Pedestrian".) And the poor "postman"...the dread he feels every time he approchase the Bucket's house...like going to his own execution. The episodes with Mary Millar playing Rose are better then the episodes with that other actress playing Rose... Never miss this show on Sat. night!! wren 06-29-2002, 06:51 PM Originally posted by 80sTrivia My fave episode of KUA is when Richard and Hyacinth go to the golf resort where "Dicky" is supposed to play a round with the Colonel. I couldn't stop laughing!!!   jmy9595 08-08-2002, 11:42 AM Ugh, I absolutely cannot stand this show. It's such a one-joke show (gee, this old bat is trying to pretend she's someone she's not and she's mortified by everyone around her) and frankly not even a funny joke at that. Why so many station shifted away from Are You Being Served? to put this rubbish on is beyond my comprehension. At least AYBS? had multiple characters and areas of plotlines. Also, no, it's not only PBS that ever airs Britcoms. I remember WPIX (Ch. 11 in NYC) airing 'Allo 'Allo! for a while back in the 80's, but it was with commercials, of course, and 'Allo 'Allo!'s not meant to have commercials, so they were awkward. I imagine that also required editing, which is a problem in a series with 'Allo 'Allo!'s plot twists and turns. I don't know why (call it intuition) but when I saw your user name, I knew you'd be dissing this show. Since you're new here, maybe you haven't noticed that these are "fan" boards, and people were talking about how they like KUA... IMO, I don't like Are you Being Served, and on the local PBS here AYBS is about all they air & I'm sick of it. jmy9595 08-12-2002, 01:23 PM > I don't know why (call it intuition) but when I saw your user name, I knew you'd be dissing this show. Since you're new here, maybe you haven't noticed that these are "fan" boards, and people were talking about how they like KUA They are fan boards and, yes, I am a fan of several Britcoms. I don't see what prohibits me from posting a dissenting view re: one particular Britcom. 80sTrivia 10-31-2002, 07:58 PM Unfortunately, now I have a conflict in watching my beloved KUA. I've become addicted to Trading Spaces and it comes on at the same time as KUA on Saturday nights! ;) Sitcoms of the 90s 12-04-2002, 08:49 PM Oh I do love Keeping Up Appearances! It's deffinately one of the best. I also really love AYBS? KUA had such great characters, actors, and stories, that it all just came together perfectly. My backgrounds Portugues, and I have a satalite that picks up a channel that only shows Portugues shows, did you know there was a Portugues Remake of KUA. Yeah, the was good, but not as the original. A lot of the episode plots were the same, but there were also new concepts to the show, and worked. A lot of the same running gags(Hyacinth answering the phone, Sheridan, Elizabeth breaking the cups, ect.) The only thing I really didn't like was that it didn't have a laugh soundtrack, it was too wacky, and the actors. Not that the actors weren't good, but they just didn't look the part. Richard was like 20 years younger, Rose seemed a little too old, and Daisy was really thin and younger(not good looking though.) My mother loved watching that show, too bad it doesn't give anymore. Speaking of which, I almost never get to see KUA in English because the station I watch it on gives it at 12:35am on weekdays, and once on sunday evenings. Does anyone know how the actress who played Rose die? And about what Patricia Rouglett said in an interview, I'd never get tired of watching this show. Jason16 01-30-2006, 01:52 PM I like this show. We're currently watching reruns of series 5 on a sunday afternoon in the UK and yesterday they showed the episode where Hyacinth bought skies for Richard on his birthday and Violet dumped Bruce!. 80sTrivia 02-02-2006, 07:46 PM Violet and Bruce are another one of my favorite running gags on the show... they are always fighting and Bruce is always trying on women's clothing!!! I always wondered why they didn't show Violet as often as they did Rose and Daisy? I also enjoyed it whenever Hyacinth was forced to go over to Daisy and Onslow's house, which was always so filthy!!! Jason16 04-15-2006, 12:57 PM I also like how Hyacinth brags about each relative whenever they phone up like "Its my sister Violet, you know the one with a mercedes, swimming pool, sauna and room for a pony" hopeandfaith06 05-03-2006, 03:04 PM Love this show so much, fantastic everytime. Does anyone know if you can buy it on DVD, i have looked but can't seem to find it but i'm sure you can get it somewhere. Love it so much. hopeandfaith06 05-28-2006, 05:35 AM I have just got season 1 & 2 on DVD and i have not seen alll the episodes from them seasons until now and they just get better and better. Did anyone else notice that the Rose in season 1 is the person who plays Edna in Emmerdale. Its funny how Onslo always says 'Oh Nice' and Hyacinth always takes the tea, coffee, toast etc of the person when they are not done with it and Elizabeth always drops the coffee or biscuits. So funny. British comedies are much better than american comedies. They are all very original and very different. American comedies are all samey if you know what i mean. Tweety 05-28-2006, 09:00 AM I have just got season 1 & 2 on DVD and i have not seen alll the episodes from them seasons until now and they just get better and better. So funny. British comedies are much better than american comedies. They are all very original and very different. American comedies are all samey if you know what i mean. Yes, I agree with you about the "Britcoms" being better than most of the stuff produced here in America... In the case of KUA, the characters seem to be fully developed from the first episode onward... even in some of the best U.S. comedies, it takes some characters a while to 'develop' into the characters we like... I knew that they had a different woman playing "Rose" in the first season (Stella something or other), but I always liked Mary Millar's Rose much, much better... and those legs of hers were apparently legendary in that town they lived in... And you're right about a lot of the running gags they have on KUA. You mentioned Onslow's "Oh Nice", and the hilarious coffee get-togethers with Hyacynth and poor Elizabeth... those coffee breaks with Elizabeth are the equal of anything Lucy and Ethel ever did... and no matter how many times they do that, it's hysterical... all they do is change the dialog slightly, but each and every time those two get together for coffee is classic.. One of my favorite running gags involves that dog that lives in the car at Onslow and Daisy's (and Rose's) place ... people can walk by that car all day and the dog doesn't do anything... then when Hyacinth tries to walk by, it jumps up and sticks his head out of the car window and starts barking at Hyacinth, and it startles her to the point that she falls backwards into the bushes... even when you KNOW it's going to happen, it's just as funny the 50th time as it is the first... And the running gags about the "postman" and the paperboys being terrified of delivering the mail / newspaper the the "Bucket's" home... fantastic... the Milkman is also terrified of the "Bucket Woman" And poor Emmett can't leave his house without Hyacinth "singing at him". That show is on Saturday nights on our local PBS station, they put it into a half hour time slot with no commercials... it's a fantastic show... And yet, on another thread in the "Britcoms" forums, one poster ran a poll to find the best Britcom, and didn't even have KUA on the list of candidates... I was surprised by that, but was told that, over in Britain, KUA is not quite considered the 'classic' that a lot of these other Britcoms are... which shows the general quality of these types of shows... KUA is really the only Britcom I watch regularly, but sometimes I'll catch one of the others (I watched "My Hero" for the first time the other afternoon on BBC America, and that show is hysterical too), and I like just about everything I've seen coming out of there... "The New Adventures of Old Christiine" is the only currently running network sitcom I watch regularly right now, because I like Julia Louis-Dreyfus... but most of the sitcoms running now are just total crap...and certainly are not appropriate for family viewing. hopeandfaith06 05-30-2006, 01:46 PM Tweety is right about everything. Everything is so funny over and over again. I love the bit at daisy and onslo's house with the dog in the car. One episode was funny where she thinks the dog is in the car but shes gets past without it being in so she thinks she is ok then the dog barks out of the front windows and she still falls into the bush. Brilliant. Harold Snoad and Roy Clarke are brilliant for making such a brilliant show and i just wish they made as many as Friends made. How come Friends made 10 seasons and KUA only made 5 and the 5th season is very rare to get in this country. I love all the extended episodes like the one where they go on the QE2 and Onslo and Daisy come as well and they get to meet the captain. Brilliant episode. JoPol_wannabe 08-19-2006, 01:52 AM This is one of my favorite Britcoms I just love the way Mrs. Bucket sorry Bouquet annoys everyone including her husband. I just feel really sorry for her neighbors espcially Elisabeth how she gets caught going to coffee at Hyacinth everyday and she is so scared that she might drop her cup and Hyacinth will yell at her. But I just love how Hyacinth family emberasses her espcially when they come over in that car and everytime they turn off the car it pops and smoke comes out of the muffler that is just to funny. My favorite episode is when Hyacinth goes to this auction and buys 8 bottles of wine, drinks a couple bottles, gets drunk and they take some of the wine over for her dad and when they get to her sisters place they come up to the gate and Hyacinth wants to grawl at the dog since it always does that to her but shen she grawls at the dog this lady that won't leave till her dad gives in to marrying her pops her head out of the car and grawls at her its just to funny. But my favorite line is when Hyacinth's sister Violet calls and Hyacinth tells Elisabeth its her sister Violet the one with the Mercades Suna and a musical Beday (not sure on spelling) that just cracked me up. I hope PBS keeps this show for a long time. todd00 09-14-2006, 03:40 PM if you have seen one you have seen them all. Furienna 04-21-2007, 06:21 PM Aaaaah, another thread about this show. Yeah, it's great. wickedmountain 05-03-2015, 11:42 PM Great show :) LeeBlue 05-04-2015, 09:20 AM This show is one of my family's favorites. Our PBS station has been showing it for awhile. And our library has a copy of it. So I am happily "keeping up". ;) |
