I am a huge fan of "Roseanne," but now that the marathon has aired season one again, I am noticing something. Roseanne was not that great of an actress in the beginning. She smiles when she says her lines, broadcasting that a joke is coming. The rest of the cast seem more natural. I do like the fact that she laughs at Dan's sense of humor and he can really crack her up. Later in the series she responds more with sarcasm rather than laughing. Rosie's acting definitely improved over the years.
It was interesting to see her in stand-up recently on HBO. She is a different person and seems more comforable doing that.

I have always noticed that. I had wondered who else saw this. Thanx Madame for again bringing up something that I too have seen.
It's almost weird seeing her smile when something is supposed to be serious. You can easily tell she wasn't comfortable in front of the camera. She must be one of those people (back then) who when they were shy or uncomfortable, they would smile or laugh. I know that I used to do that A LOT when I was young. It was something I had to work hard at stop doing. My face hurt too much with all that damn smiling.
Looking back, I liked that Roseanne than the one we came to know in the later seasons when she did all that bad plastic surgery, she was divorced from Tom Arnold and she always seemed to have an angry look on her face ALL THE TIME. The Roseanne character seemed so darn sarcastic and rude most of the time...not much laughter or happiness came out of her.

I've been noticing the same thing watching the marathon. Her acting was awful in the early days, and improved dramatically as time went on.

In the early seasons, she was a horrible actress, but she seemed and looked like a real housewive and mother. In the later seasons, her acting was great, but predictable, but she looked much better. It's really hard to tell which Roseanne i like better.

She did become a better actress during Season 3, but she seemed to barely smile after Season 6, even as a character trait, I mean. Maybe her plastic surgery damaged her funny bone.

She was particularily good in her scenes with Laurie as the show progressed. Especially the one where their father died and when Fisher was beating Jackie.
