It's a very tough call, but for some reason I give the edge to Pink Floyd. Of course, my opinion might change an hour from now.

I just can't decide because they're two very unique bands with very unique styles. I love them both.

Led Zeppelin

I've never been a big Pink Floyd fan. The only Floyd album I ever had was The Wall. I had it on cassette back in high school but I got rid of it years ago. Led Zeppelin, on the other hand, is one of my all time favorite bands. With the exception of The Beatles, no other band has had a bigger influence on popular music. You can hear the influence of Led Zeppelin on everything from hard core heavy metal to pop music. From the heavy rock of Led Zeppelin and Led Zeppelin II (both 1969) to the more mellow sounds of Led Zeppelin III (1970) and Hoses of the Holy (1973), they were a band that was unique.

You've never had The Dark Side Of The Moon, Mike? I can't get enough of that album.

And don't feel too bad for not liking The Wall. I actually got rid of my copy a few years ago. I find it boring and pretentious.

No, I have to admit that I never had The Dark Side of the Moon. I've heard it though. My older sister loves Pink Floyd, so I heard their music all the time when I was growing up. I also had a really good friend in high school who loved Pink Floyd. So I've heard quite a bit of their music, but I've never been able to get into it.

I've always liked Pink Floyd and my husband prefers Led Zepplin.

I find it neither.

There are really great songs that outweigh any of those notions.

Self-indulgent? Yes.
Throwaway tunes only there due to ego? Sure.

But that is a lot of brilliant albums and artists.
I love OK Computer by Radiohead but it has its throwaways and hints of pretentiousness as well. I mean really, Thom Yorke isn't a self-possesed whiner?

A very valid point about Thom Yorke, who, admittedly, is one of my favorites.

To be totally honest (I'm throwing myself to the wolves here), I only listened to The Wall in its entirety once, so maybe I didn't give it the chance it deserved. It just didn't grab me instantly, like Dark Side, Wish You Were Here and Animals did. I even liked The Division Bell better than The Wall.

Maybe the next time I'm out shopping, I'll pick up a used copy of The Wall and give it another chance.

Led Zeppelin was straight up rock and roll. But they did practically everything, and did it well. "Our mediocre was better than everyone else's best", said Jimmy Page.

Pink Floyd was a prog band, and were into creating lengthy concept albums which either told a story or carried a theme. For many in the 70's, prog rock was the coolest, radical thing in the world, or for others, it was the most inane, bloated bunch of indulgence. I'm certainly not saying that, but for many music fans, prog rock had its limitations and drawbacks. You had Led Zeppelin, which was awesome, celebratory, and decadent, and you could digest it, and with Pink Floyd, you had to be ready to be immersed into the total experience. They had a way of reeling you right in, on albums like "Wish You Were Here", which had song cycles revolving around fallen member Syd Barrett and the machinery of the music industry, and sounding breathtaking while doing it. It was a total sonic experience.

Meanwhile, in concert, this approach to music was not lost on Led Zeppelin. They could play an extended version of "Dazed And Confused" live for 25+ minutes--with Jimmy Page playing electric guitar with a violin bow!--and have an encore with John Bonham's 45-minute drum solo.

Not me, I strongly dislike both bands. For the most part, I tend to dislike bands/musicians that are promoted by the media and popular with the masses. Some of the best albums in my record collection are by obscure artists/bands that are not well known and underappreciated.

Led Zeppelin!!! One of my all time favorite groups!! They ROCK!! ;) ;) Pink Floyd has some good songs, but they were a lot of times a wee bit too abstract and "out there" for me!!

One good song by Pink Floyd is Money. That's a pretty good tune. Aside from Stairway To Heaven, I can't think of any other Zeppelin songs that I like except for maybe D'yer Mak'er.
