View Full Version : How do you meet people? (warning: lots of whining)
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 01-20-2007, 12:30 AM I'm socially ********. I have no life, I never do anything and I've never had a boyfriend because I don't know how to meet or talk to people. I never do anything with my friends because I don't know how to ask people to do things. How do you meet people? I can't just go up to someone randomly. That's out of the question, that makes people think you're weird especially in highschool. They give you that God damn look. How do you talk to people? Wtf do you say? How you make people like you? How do you get people to tell you their ****ing numbers like my dumbass little sister? How do you even live a life? Is it because I'm in front of this damn computer? How do you fix your social skills? Seriously. Because I know people will respond and be like oh well all you do is go up to people and say hi I'm so and so. Yeah ****ing right. It's not that easy. Obviously I might as well just kill myself if this is the damn sad, lonely life I'm going to be living because I'm sick and tired of not being able to do stuff like other people. There's no way I'll ever have anyone. ANd don't anyone say you're here to talk to me because it's not the same. This is the internet you can't be happy with people solely off the internet. I have no one. If I weren't such a chicken I'd probably have killed myself by now. Thanks bye.
EmoJoe 01-20-2007, 12:36 AM im kind of having the same probelm as you...but i dont know, i would just try to like...i know it sounds cheesy, but just be yourself, you dont have to go and approach someone with random babell, just say things you normally would...and chances are SOMEONE out there will like it, and phuc the people who dont.
but yeah you dont go to random people and say hi, doesnt work, you just have to kind of make yourself noticed instead of just...hiding.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 01-20-2007, 12:37 AM Thanks, but that doesn't work. I am myself. Everyone thinks I'm weird obviously no one cares enough to talk to me more.
EmoJoe 01-20-2007, 12:38 AM Thanks, but that doesn't work. I am myself. Everyone thinks I'm weird obviously no one cares enough to talk to me more.
well i dont know, all i can say is that in a year you'll be in college and it's a fresh start, by senior year of high school everyone already has their friends. but yeah soon you'll be in college and it might be different. so if it doesnt work now..it might in college. cause no one knows anyone there and people don't have friends or cliques already.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 01-20-2007, 12:39 AM well i dont know, all i can say is that in a year you'll be in college and it's a fresh start, by senior year of high school everyone already has their friends. but yeah soon you'll be in college and it might be different. so if it doesnt work now..it might in college. cause no one knows anyone there and people don't have friends or cliques already.
obviously not because my sister talks to guys all the time and shes 15, fact she's on the phone doing it right now. I hate her.
MaydayMalonesGirl 01-20-2007, 12:40 AM i'm sorry, ashlee. me and you are riding along in similar little boats. unfornately i don't have any productive answers to your questions because i've got a nice batch of social problems myself.
but yeah - high school is bull****. just find a couple people you can semi-relate with and be yourself around them. **** everyone else.
EmoJoe 01-20-2007, 12:42 AM obviously not because my sister talks to guys all the time and shes 15, fact she's on the phone doing it right now. I hate her.
she's just a different kind of person, and in a few years it'll probably be a BAD thing. fact is, the clique your in during high school isnt ever going to make a difference.
and as for having a boyfriend, 17 is still kind of too young for that. you shouldnt just be like "OMG LOOK AT THIS GUY HES MY BOYFRIEND CAUSE I RANDOMY FOUND HIM AND I WANNA LOOK COOL LZOZLZL :D :D :D !!!!!!" it should be someone you REALLY love. im not saying you cant be in love at 17 but if your not in love at 17 you shouldnt really be worried.
still, i feel your pain, im kind of going through the same thing right now. it sucks, but eh :/ like i said, maybe college will be better.

I'm sick of what I have, though. It's ****.

 you just need 1 or 2 good friends. cliques are stupid.

I disagree. 17 is definately not too young. That's the age you're supposed to be dating. It's not young at all. 14 is young. 17 isn't. It's just a big age gap for three years. I'm so ****ed up seriously. I can't see that changing because it's not a highschool problems, it's my own personal problems.
MaydayMalonesGirl 01-20-2007, 12:45 AM I'm sick of what I have, though. It's ****.
yeah, i got you. everynight i come home and im like, "i'm going to act differently tomorrow" and then i mess it up. but yeah, i'm just a failure like that..

im not saying 17 is too young but if you havent found someone then its not something to worry about.

good friends? they're nothing like me, I get miserable around them because I feel so awkward. They're these nerdy little over achievers who hang out with nerdy guys I have no interest in whatsoever. I don't care if that makes me sound like a bitch. I'm not happy with what I have and I'm miserable whether or not its for a good reason.

If I don't start practicing now I'm going to have major issues later. That's why kids date, it's basically practice. They might think its love but its just practice. I'll never have that. I'll be so lost when I finally do find someone that it'll just get all screwed up.

well then those arent your friends then.

I'll never change and neither will people. Life is life and obviously I don't know how to live it. That's why i say I might as well die. But I can't do that either. So I'm just stuck. I think this might be what hell is like so even if I do horrible **** for the rest of my life it's gonna be no different when I die.

*Pleasant Tomorrow* 01-20-2007, 12:53 AM well then those arent your friends then.

yah, no one likes me on this board besides you guys either. that REALLY doesn't matter. people suck. all of them. its in human nature to be a complete ******* to everyone.
Johnny Five 01-20-2007, 12:56 AM I know exactly what you mean. And people try to help by saying things like: "Don't even try and people will gravitate to you."
That doesn't work. -_-

It's crap. You know who says that? People who don't have social problems. So seriously why am I even asking for advice? No one knows. I'm basically just ranting so everyone can see how miserable I am.
Johnny Five 01-20-2007, 01:00 AM It's crap. You know who says that? People who don't have social problems.
Exactly. Which is why I never talk about it. You just end up getting blank stares or pity. And that doesn't help.

I usually don't but sometimes I snap like right now.
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 01-20-2007, 01:40 PM Its not easy making friends in HS espcially if youre shy. I was the same way in school, though I did have my small group of friends. They were great and stuff and we'd hang out outside of school occassionaly, but honestly most of my time was spent at home because I never went out. Amanda was my best friend though and we hung out constantly, and really thats all I needed. Just having one person to do everything with is all you need. Then I moved up here and I felt like the new kid at school all over again even though I was 20 and only working. All my friends were 90 min. away so its not like I go down everyday. I had people up here at work I talked to, but outside of work I was always home or if I went out shopping etc., it was alone. I didnt start to make friends up here and actually hang out with them til last summer - a little over 2 years from being up here!! It took a really long time, but Im happy now that I have friends and am making more. Yeah Im not going out everynite to the bar, but I do get out of the house. The only thing that disappoints me and it will probably make me sound like a bitch, is that theyre not the kind of friends I wanted. Theyre great and all, but theyre not like my friends back home. There is def. a cultural diferrence between northern NH and southern NH - majority of people up here are into the outdoorsy stuff and all my old friends prefer indoor activities [shopping!!!], so thats something I have to deal with. Not to mention, 2 of my friends up here are already married and have kid[s]!! so its complicated when it comes to calling them up and seeing if they wanna go shopping, as opposed to my mothers where I can just call and we go. Ugh sorry that was really long.

No because that's like me. My friends aren't the kind I want either...but because I have so many social issues that's all I have. I can't just go and make new friends that easily.
tdf4077 01-20-2007, 04:29 PM Ok....here's my story (though I'm not sure where it's going):
Junior high: I was super outgoing and bubbly...had tons of friends; always talked on the phone or went out with friends. It was great! Had some really good boyfriends...
Moved summer before my sophomore year: I became shy. Had a few close friends and one great friend...dated losers here and there, but never anything super serious or for real.
College: best friend from high school ditched me b/c I was active in band and a sorority and she wasn't. Friendships I bought by joining the sorority sucked and weren't worth it. Met my husband in band. Didn't make any lasting friends.
Post-College: Now, I've been teaching high school at the same place for 4 years. I'm getting a divorce. One of my slight friends in high school has become my best friend, and we hang out and all, but he's the ONLY person I count as a good friend. I have several other friends, and I appreciate them, but I'm getting really scared that as I start this divorce and my best friend goes off to med school, I'm going to be all alone...part of me is thinking of sticking w/my loser husband I don't even like because I'm so scared of being alone. I have NO idea how to meet people..., so I understand. Really.

Czas na Zywiec 01-20-2007, 04:53 PM you know what, they say high school is best time of your life, to that i say bullll****. high school is nothing but a social jungle and if you don't form into the right groups, you're pretty much destined to be ignored by everyone. it sucks but its a fact of life. i transfered to a new high school in the middle of sophmore year and I hated it. absolutely hated it because its bad enough i transfered, I went out of the state to a part of the country where I am a total stranger to. it was like moving to a foreign country. so i was pretty much a loner for about a year or two. i had a small groups of friends, but of course, i never saw them gain after high school. not that i really care, i had to do anything and everything to get out of that town and start anew. next comes college. anyone can vouge for this, but college is like a total 180 from high school. no cliques, no groups, none of that stupid drama **** that high school carried with it, and its sooooo much easier to meet people. when you are a freshman and lost on campus, there are thousands other freshman like you, so everyone is on equal footing, scared ****less because they were so used to their cushy lives at home and seeing the same people for 13 years and now that's all gone. so i know it probably doesn't help much to say just "wait," but I promise you 100% that in college the "be yourself" thing actually works. you'll meet people just like you, in class, in your dorm, maybe even your roomate will be your best friend. me and my roomates were total opposites, someone i thought id never get along with, but we clicked like that right on the start. I also never did anything in high school (dated, drank, had sex) the people who do that do it solely for status and that's it. i bet you some of them even regret doing all that **** just for that reason.
basically, I know how you feel, I was you so hang in there is really all that you can do. seemed to take forever to get to where I am now when I was your age, but the wait is soooo worth it.
Ravey 01-20-2007, 05:14 PM You already know I'm in the same situation. Funny how we all are. I have nothing in common with my offline friends. And I don't know if anything is going to change in college either. It doesn't look like it will. I'm too shy to make friends. People have to come to me. When we had to introduce ourselves I was the most nervous in the entire class. I'm such a ****ing loser. Everyone else did it with ease and I was a nervous wreck. Why am I so ****ed up? And you already know i've never been on a date and I'm almost 19. :) I'm in my "I might as well die.' mode again lately too. One day I'm gonna go crazy and really kill myself. So I don't have any advice. -_-

Yup! This is pretty much right on point.
When I was younger, I made friends just through clubs and groups and stuff like that...we had so many classes together, it was kinda just something that happened.
I don't know...I'd like more friends...but I'm becoming more and more of a recluse of late. People always say, "You've just got to get out more." When you're younger, the mall and the movies and restaurants work...but I'm in my mid-20's now. What am I supposed to do? go to these places...hope someone interesting-looking comes in, and walk over and greet them? That's strange to me!

That's why I can't wait for college. Next fall. But at the saime time I have anxiety issues so I don't know how that'll work out either.

That's why we're all here on the internet. It's all we can do. Ugh but seriously I just hope we all get over it one day. Holy **** there's nothing I want more.

Yeah, I pretty much figured that's why we're all on the internet when I realized we're all in the same situation. It really sucks to be so anti-social. It makes almost everything in life 10 times harder.
