Guys,

Do you believe that the parenting and discipline of Cliff and Claire was relatively fair and balanced? What times do you think they were either too strict or lenient?

For example, I think that they were a little too hard on Theo in "Theo's Dirty Laundry." This is the episode where they learned that he has moved in with his girlfriend Justine and is using their money that they gave him for College to open up a back account and help her pay her rent. Yes, there is no question that what Theo did was wrong and he gets a real "tough love" lecture from both Cliff and Clair. Even if you can accept the fact that they don't let him back into the house to live after Theo and Justice realize that they made a foolish decision, I can live with that I guess. Their main issue for being angry was Theo doing dishonest things with their money and being evasive about it.

But than, why do they welcome Denise with open arms back into the house when she screwed up just as badly by not mailing in she and Martin's military housing application? Denise could be even more whiny than Theo ever was. Maybe they just felt badly because of her raising her new stepdaughter. But the fact is, she DID screw up many times and they appeared to give her more freedom and leeway as opposed to the other kids. I think Theo got the short end of the stick on some of the discipline.

Claire also making a big deal about Vanessa wearing make-up was overdone. I can understand that if the kids disobeyed they were justifiably punished. BUT some of the punishments did not match up to the severity of the offenses (or lack of severity) that some of the kids had to face.

The order that I would put the Parenting Favoritism would go like this:

Denise

Rudy

Vanessa

Theo.

Although you could interchange Vanessa and Theo. Note that I did not include Sondra, because she was away at college most of the time and did not really become a major part of story-lines until she married Elvin. Her character was not seen often enough to judge how Cliff and Claire handled disciplining her.
