There are so many great shows out there. They don't make them like they used to. All in the Family, M*A*S*H, Seinfeld, Barney Miller and The Jeffersons, just to name a few.
But there are the shows that never made it. Archie Bunker's Place only lasted four seasons. Stark Raving Mad only lasted 18 episodes. The Weber Show lasted only 15 episodes. And The Michael Richards Show only lasted eight episodes. What other great shows only lasted a short life?

What about Bobby Sherman's early '70's sitcom, "Getting Together"? I never saw that show because I was just three years old when it aired, and no reruns have been shown! LOL! I understand it was a spinoff of "The Partridge Family." Maybe TVLand or Nick At Nite Will air reruns of "Getting Together" someday. That would be neat!

"All Is Forgiven" lasted only about a month on NBC in the mid 1980s, but had what I still consider the best first episode of any series I have ever seen. Well-written, character-based humor was present after only 22 minutes. "Flying Blind" on FOX in the early '90s, with Tea Leoni, was also very funny at times.

Guys, you are all forgetting the extremely short lived series' Mary (1985-1986) and Annie McGuire (1986). Mary starred Mary Tyler Moore, Addams Family's John Austin and before Married With Children, Katey Segal. That show only lasted 13 episodes. The same as the biggest TV veteran Lucille Ball in that same time region. Also Annie Mc Guire lasted only 7 shows.

i also enjoyed high incident, i remember when vanessa marcil was on.. as for hill street blues it can harldy be considered short lived, as it lasted like ten years and won like 100 emmys i believe they had the record for most emmy wins until last year when ER broke it.

"Archie Bunker's Place" actually shouldn't be considred a failure for only lasting 4 seasons as this was a continuation from "All in the Family".

Remember back in the day if a show lasted 4 seasons it was considred a success because it would enable the producers to sell it to syndication. In some cases 3 seasons are a success.

Recently CBS cancelled "What about Joan" Joan Cusak's series which I think only came out mid season last year - that is a disppointment. Also the new series "Danny" starring Daniel Stern was cancelled after only 2 episodes! There's no such thing as developing a show anymore I guess.

If that had been the case "All in the Family", "Cheers", "Family Ties", and countless others would have bit the dust in the early going as well.

I will post again later when I develop my listing of shows that shouldn't have been cancelled!

"Just the Ten of Us" lasted three seasons-it was a mid season replacement in 1988.

And I don't think "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" would count-it was more 'specials' and went under diff'rent names during it's run due to changing sponsers. And the fact that it wasn't really much a series since by that time space of three seasons most shows would have upwards of 80 episodes!

My favorite obscure program was "Get a Life" with Chris Elliott, in the early 90's. Chris was a 30 yr. old paper boy who lived with his parents, and the first season was great! The second was a bit out-there and was soon cancelled. I still have several taped episodes of this show.
Early this year, "The Lone Gunman" was a great spin-off of "X-Files" but didn't last more than a few episodes

Didn't "Good Morning Miss Bliss" move from the Disney Channel to NBC and then became "Saved by the Bell"? Speaking of the Disney Channel, one show I remember they used to have was the 80's spin off of "Leave It To Beaver" which was called "Still The Beaver". It moved over to TBS in the late 80's and was renamed "The New Leave It To Beaver".

To refresh your memory, the show's plot was about Beaver moving back in with his mom after a divorce. He moves his two boys (Kipp and Oliver) with him. Ward passed away (it never really said how, but I think the guy who played him in the original actually died). Wally married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ellen Rogers and they have two kids (Kelly and Kevin). They live right next door to June and Beaver.

Eddie Haskell is still around. He owns his own construction company and he has two boys, Freddie and Bomber (which were actually played by his two sons). Lumpy still comes around from time to time.

I liked the show, but it just went off the air with no final episode or anything. I still have a few episodes on tape. Do any of you remember watching this show?

Well I really liked The Fighting Fitzgeralds, it was laugh out loud kind of comedy, but unfortunaly it couldn't hold an audience. It was a mid season replacement last season.

Oh Grow Up, that was a funny show to I beleive it only lasted 6 episodes on ABC. But I think if they would have kept it they wouldn't be in the runt they are now. It was the kind of show that would grow on you.

There was an old the WB sitcom called Kirk starring Kirk Cameron, the was a pretty good show.

I actually found some info on "Oh, Grow Up". It wasn't actually cancelled do to ratings. The creater of that show is also the man behind HBO hit drama "Six Feet Under". Any ways OGU was cancelled because the creater Alan Ball was having creative difficulites with ABC. That's why it was cancelled.

Faulty Towers....hahah remember the sign out front the letters were always messed up and it would say Farty towels or something like that? hah

One very short lived show I remember was Second Noah, I never watched it but remember it well because it was filmed in Tampa, FL in a suburban neighborhood, I drive past everyday. The family that owned the house won a contest or something and they used their house, the gazebo and all. Funny its just in the middle of a neighborhood in central florida.

Someone said Street Hawk... yes! I cant believe that was so short, i thought it was on for years, now I know why it seemed like every episode was the same!

;) anyone remember "After M*A*S*H"? That show was good but it failed in the ratings and with critics who tuned in hoping to see the same nuttiness like on "M*A*S*H". what about "The Tortellies" spin-off from "Cheers" dealing with the life of Carla's ex-husband, Nick? Bob Newhart has been getting it rough lately by a generation too consumed with shock humor. I loved both versions of "Bob"- the comic book version and the greeting card version with Betty White. I also loved "George and Leo" but they made a fatal mistake when they tried to mix the sharp tongue Judd Hirsch with the low key Bob Newhart. it might have looked good on paper seeing another variation on the "Odd Couple" concept but it didn't play out well. one of the funniest and most watched episode to my knowledge was when Bob and Judd's former guest stars from all of their previous shows made cameo roles. another short-lived program was "Heaven Help Us" in which Ricardo Montalban plays a God-type character looking over a newly dead couple. the star was John Schneider and it was on from 1996-1997 in syndication. what about the short-lived programs that many people assume ran for years and years: "Batman" actually ran from 1966-1968 but back in those days more episodes were produced during a single season. "Star Trek" ran from 1966-1969 but we all know the popularity that show has attained!

These are the best shows that were pulled within one year

Drexell's Class
Dabney Coleman teaching fifth graders - trust me it was funnier than it looks on paper!

The Powers That Be
David Hyde Pierce and Peter MacNicol before they hit big.

Boston Common
Lasted for just over a year but was funny as hell, typical of these sort of firecracker shows both the star and the girl turned up later in Mediocre sitcoms (Yes Dear and 2 Guys + a Girl)

Hudson Street
A really, really good Tony Danza vehicle, very popular in Australia too, top ten every week it was on!

The Michael Richards Show
Sure - he was playing Kramer as a PI, but that's a good thing!

Me & the Boys
I loved this show, screened during one summer here in Australia, My Wife and Kids owes a debt to this show.

Wasn't that the one with Bronson Pinchot where that same woman would guest star as a different character every week?

That got a pitiful weekday afternoon timeslot for a few weeks in Australia so I didn't get to see much of it.

Hmm...here's the ones I can think of right now:

Saved by the Bell: the College Years
Kirk
Lois & Clark: the New Adventures of Superman
Our House

I would not exactly call either of those shows forgotten. Saved By The Bell: The College Years will forever be remember as part of the SBTB franchise. And Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman lasted for, what, four seasons? Dean Cain and that series are intertwined and always will be.

I am not sure what is more frightening: the fact that the list above is so very long or the fact that I recognize most of the titles.

My vote goes to Mary (13 episodes, 1985-86), starring Mary Tyler Moore and James Farentino.

Dear John (1988-1992), despite his four-year run, also deserved a longer life.

I never got to see The Tortellis and All is forgiven, but something tells me they also deserved a second chance.

Someone in a previous post mentioned Alf, which I wouldn't include in this category for obvious reasons --it was a BIG hit.

On the other hand, Fawlty Towers had only 12 episodes, but I wouldn't consider this a "forgotten" show, either --besides the fact that it became extremely popular, John Cleese has always credited the show's short number of episodes as the key of its success.

Just my thoughts. :) Cheers!

Remember that Three's company spin-off called "The Ropers"? It featured that old couple the original landlords of Jack, Chrissy, and Janet' it only lasted one season in 1980, but it was a pretty worth while show.
I saw an interview once with Norman Fell and he was talking about that and said that he left "THREE'S COMPANY" with the understanding that if "THE ROPERS" didn't work out, he could return to "TC". So after it was cancelled he said "All right, now I can return to TC right"? But they said "Oh, no; you can't return now. We recast your part. Sorry"!

But ther must be another side to that or something. They wouldn't be that mean to an actor.

remember Mary Tyler Moores short-lived shows after her sucessful sitcom? "MARY"-a comedy-variety show, "THE MARY TYLER MOORE HOUR"-a sitcom/variety show which showed her life both at home and at work as the star of a variety show, an office sitcom (I forget the name of it) which was similar to "THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW" and "ANNIE McGUIRE" another sitcom; where she played a social worker.

Mary Tyler Moore's Mary Tyler Moore clone was Mary :D

I don't think anybody was worried about confusing it with her Mary variety show from 1978.

Would love to see GRINDL with Imogene Coca. From the synopsis I've read, it sounds like such a fun show. Wish there was a way to get these shows on dvd somehow. Sony really needs to start an MOD program like Warner and get some of these short-lived shows out there for public consumption. :)

^ I don't remember this, but I do remember Bosley in a series called Father Dowling Mysteries as a minister who solved crimes.

A couple I don't think anyone came up with:

No Soap, Radio (1982)- ABC aired this in spring 1982 after Police Squad! got canceled. It was rather weird, a sitcom that took place at a posh hotel that would cut into vignettes that had nothing to do with the plot.

Matt Houston (1982-1985)- Crime drama about a wealthy Texan living in California. Somewhat similar to Magnum PI but it was good. First season recently came out on DVD.

the Tom Bosley show was called "THE FATHER DOWLING MYSTERIES". It also starred Tracy Nelson (Rick Nelsons wife) as a nun.

Does anyone remember a short-lived sitcom that stared Dick Van Dyke (right before he did "DIAGNOSIS: MURDER") and his son Barry, where they played a father & son who ran a small dinner theater in upstate Pennsylvania? I forget the name of it, I think it was on CBS.
I remember they aired it right before (or after, I forget) a short-lived sicom that starred Mary Tyler Moore called "ANNIE McGUIRE" where she played a counselor. It was about 1990.

Anyone remember Aliens In The Family? This show (which involved aliens living with a family of humans) only lasted two weeks on ABC's primetime schedule in March 1996, even though ABC chose to air the remaining episodes on their Saturday morning schedule the following summer. Personally, I have this sitcom at the top of my list of "Sitcoms that lasted less than a year."

...I had to- I had a friend whose cable service was cut off. He'd taped the first two episodes on Friday nights that March; after his service was yanked from him, he had me tape the remaining episodes that were scheduled on Saturday mornings during the summer of '96 [11:30am-12noon(et)]. I saw them, and I realized the series belonged on Saturday mornings; "ALIENS IN THE FAMILY" was basically an exaggerated live-action cartoon, with life-sized Muppets. I kept thinking, for this John Bedford Lloyd ("Doug Brody") left AMC's "REMEMBER WENN"?? Fortunately, after "ALIENS" was cancelled, he was able to rejoin "REMEMBER WENN" for its final season of episodes. I was later surprised to learn that co-star Margaret ("Cookie") Trigg committed suicide seven years later, in 2003. Very few people remember this series today...I don't believe ABC/Disney would even offer this on DVD, that's how obscure it is.

....it wasn't "pretty stupid"; "FEAR FACTOR", was "pretty stupid". "FIND MY FAMILY"...was maudlin and "pretty stupid". And compared to "ALIENS IN THE FAMILY", even "THE BACHELOR/BACHELORETTE" is "pretty stupid". Understand the thread now? If I had to choose between almost all of today's "reality shows" and "ALIENS"....

the Tom Bosley show was called "THE FATHER DOWLING MYSTERIES". It also starred Tracy Nelson (Rick Nelsons wife) as a nun.

Tracy Nelson is Rick Nelson's daughter with his ex-wife Kristin Harmon, not his wife. Her younger twin brothers Matthew & Gunnar formed a band called Nelson, and her even younger brother Sam was involved in a custody battle, after Rick's death, between the Nelsons (her ex-in-laws who were supporting her) and her brother Mark Harmon and his wife Pam Dawber, who wanted custody of him.

Two:

1) Lotsa Luck, with Dom DeLuise and Kathleen Freeman. It's about this guy who lives in Brooklyn with his mom, his sister, and brother-in-law, and works for the bus company in the lost and found (I think). Dom's brother-in-law was played by Wynn Irwin, who, recently, could be seen in a recurring role as a defense lawyer on Law And Order. The character didn't have a job; he lollygagged around the house all day in a smelly, crusty bathrobe. The best line uttered for the length of the series involved the brother-in-law having a head cold, and his head being stuffed up. "I can't smell anything, Stanley!", he said to Dom DeLuise. "Don't worry Arthur," he replied. "No matter where you go in the world, no matter where life takes you, you'll smell."

2) The Paul Lynde Show. This one was great- hilarious lines, hilarious performances. Like the one above, it only lasted a season...way too short. Paul Lynde was a treasure.

Both were from 1973.

Sam Waters starring Montell Williams aired on CBS in 1996. It aired for about 6 weeks.

There was a show called Kate Brasher that aired on CBS for about 6 weeks in 2001. It starred Mary Stuart Masterson as a social worker.

The People Next Door- Co-created by Wes Craven, and starring Jeffrey Jones.

The Steven Banks Show- A PBS sitcom, it was a semi-spinoff of Steven Banks' hilarious one man show Steven Banks: Home Entertainment Center.

Free Spirit- It was a Bewitched-style sitcom. I remember watching it because it had Frank Luz from the horror flick Ghost Town, and Corinne Bohrer.

Easy Street- Loni Anderson, Jack Elam, and James Cromwell

Brothers- Showtime sitcom, about 3 brothers- one is an ex-football player who opens a restaurant, the younger brother who is gay works for him, and their older brother is a construction worker.

Normal Life- Starring the Zappa siblings Moon Unit and Dweezil.

Nearly Departed- Eric Idle and Caroline McWilliams play husband and wife who die and come back as ghosts to haunt the new family that moved into their home.

That's Life- 1968 hour long musical/comedy series with Robert Morse and E.J. Peaker, it lasted one season of 26 episodes, originally aired on ABC. Very classy show, I'd love for the complete series to come out on DVD, but music costs would probably be too expensive because several songs were performed in each episode.

*"FREE SPIRIT" featured Corinne Bohrer as "Winnie Goodwinn", a nanny who also happened to be a witch. It lasted a few episodes on ABC's fall 1989 schedule.
*'NORMAL LIFE" was supposed to be more "unconventional" than most sitcoms, but CBS insisted it was to be a "straight" family sitcom. Maxwell Gail, who played the father, was so incensed at the changes, he left the series before they had a chance to tape more episodes. It was just as well- it lasted a short time in the spring of 1990.
*"THE PEOPLE NEXT DOOR"- now that was too weird for most viewers (Jeffrey Jones as a cartoonist whose creations and ideas literally come to life, with several guest star cameos), and that's why it lasted just five episodes on CBS in the fall of '89.
*'EASY STREET"- Brandon Tartikoff's second attempt to make Loni Anderson an NBC star (her first, "PARTNERS IN CRIME" with Lynda Carter, lasted about 13 episodes in the fall of '84). And it flopped almost as fast.
*'NEARLY DEPARTED"- Brandon Tartikoff's attempt to create an updated "TOPPER" for the '80s. Four episodes, in the spring of '89. Not even its lead-in, "ALF", could help make it more popular with viewers. Poor Eric Idle!

'THAT'S LIFE", the 1968-'69 musical comedy "sitcom", was from the same team that had created the hour-long musical "Honeymooners" episodes for Jackie Gleason in the mid-'60s: Lyn Duddy, Jerry Bresler, and writer/producer Marvin Marx. It was unusual for a weekly comedy series to have production numbers- and guest stars- in its storyline. But ABC wasn't as "strong" as it is these days, and they'd often throw anything different on their schedules at the time to attract and audience.

...I'd like to offer MY contribution to the list of "forgotten shows":

"SYDNEY", a Valerie Bertinelli comedy that briefly aired on CBS in the spring of 1990. She played a private detective- and her boss (and potential lover) didn't take her too seriously because she was a "woman" [and too cute!]. Eddie Van Halen wrote and performed the theme. Barbara Feldon was asked to play Sydney's mother, and she passed on the role. {A wise move!} It would be completely forgotten today if Matthew Perry hadn't been part of the cast.

TerrorVision (Not to be confused with Ted Nicolaou's film of the same name from 1986)

A few others from LIFETIME since Torgo mentioned Lifetime:

"What Should You Do?"--- 2003-2004--- Hosted by Leeza Gibbons this show told viewers what to do in emergency situations. It was very good.

"Beyond chance" was an early 2000's reality show on LIFETIME hosted by Melissa Ehteridge that chronicled stories of paranormal activity.

"Attitudes" was a early 80's talk show on LIFETIME hosted by soap star Linda Dano (and various others). It aired from 1985-1991. it was the first cable series to be nominated as "Best Talk Show" at the Daytime Emmy Awards and was also the first American talk show to be hosted by two females. A new version called "New Attitudes" (with a very different format) was launched in 1999 and hosted by Kim Coles, it didn't last long.

--------------

Also, i just remembered a sitcom from 1990 I LOVED as a child, called "New Attitudes" starring Sheryl Lee Ralph (and others), set in a hair salon. It was a funny sitcom that last all of 8 episodes on Friday nights on ABC.

1st & Ten was an HBO sitcom about a football team that ran for believe it or not 6 seasons (1984-1991) and starred Delta Burke, Jason Beghe and OJ Simpson (before he became a murderer). Delta Burke left this series in it's third season to work full-time on the network series "Designing Women" (for CBS) which was becoming a huge success.

Despite airing in syndication early in the 90's during the now-infamous OJ Simpson trial, this show is virtually forgotten today, and I doubt even anybody at HBO remembers it. The on-going joke is that the football team is owned by a female. Shanna Reed filled this void for a period of time after Burke left the show.

Shanna Reed filled this void for a period of time after Burke left the show.

imdb says 1st & 10 ran for 7 seasons (but that's cable-TV seasons) which = 10 to 12 episodes a season. The series had 80 episodes.

Anyway, I think 1st & 10: The Complete Series, was the first complete tv series box set I ever saw thrown in the "bargain" bin at Walmart! Was it that bad a show, that nobody wants?

there was a show on ABC in the 90s-it was a western called THE YOUNG OUTLAWS or something. It was another failed attempt to revive the western.

And CBS had a western in the 90s that ran for 2 seasons called PARADISE then in the second season the name was changed to THE GUNS OF PARADISE and I readd at the time they were gonna put in more action; but they never did.

In the early 90's Ann Margaret starred in a series called "Four Corners" that was heavily promoted as one of the most anticipated new shows of the season on CBS, but by the time it got to air it was a huge disaster, ratings were poor and it was canceled after about two episodes.

It was a soap opera produced by David Jacobs (Knot's Landing) and focused on Margret's character trying to save her family ranch from developers.

I guess the series later aired on LIFETIME under a different name as a mini-series. I recall watching this and liking it, but then it just vanished.

Life With Lucy (1986) - Lucille Ball's attempt at making a comeback, I only saw one episode and that was because John Ritter was a guest star.

Spencer (1984-1985) - short lived 80's comedy initially with Chad Lowe playing the typical 80's teen who was later replaced by another actor in the latter half.

The Phoenix, Manimal, StreetHawk, The Master, Automan, The Quest(The 80's one), Macgruder & Loud, Hot Pursuit, Misfits Of Science, We Got It Made, The Wizard, Hard Time On Planet Earth, Raven, Whoops!, Deadly Games, Live Shot. And one more WEREWOLF.

I see someone already named most of the ones I would have named. I love "Automan" (I've seen the whole series) and "Manimal". (I've seen some of it- I'd love to see the rest.) Both these short-lived scifi series from the 1980s recently got released to DVD in Region 2. I'd love to see a Region 1 release. "The Wizard", "The Phoenix", "Street Hawk", "The Master", "Misfits of Science", "MacGruder & Loud" and "Werewolf" are all pretty cool too.
To those I would add a few other short-lived classics- "Otherworld", "Wizards & Warriors", "Probe", "Voyagers!", "Blacke's Magic", "Battlestar Galactica" and "Galactica 1980" (okay- I don't know if those are really forgotten or not- but they are both short-lived with only 1 season apiece- but thankfully both are on DVD now. And yes- I mean the original series from the 1970s of course. I don't really care about the 2000s remake series.)
As for sitcoms- there're "Joanie Loves Chachi", "Blansky's Beauties", "Out of the Blue", "Out of this World", "Day By Day", "Aliens in the Family", "The Boys Are Back" and one of my favorites- "Going Places".:)
And one of my favorite short-lived scifi shows that is now on DVD- "Starman". LOVE this series! Based on the great, classic 1984 movie, this series is a wonderful continuation- in some ways, it's even better than the movie.

I think the definition of forgotten shows is a show that was onthe air for atleast 4 seasons but is rarely in syndication. Example would be Chico and the Man, Alice, Mr. Belverde, and Blossom

- Gimme A Break! (excluding Nell and Addy) has:

* Katie
* Julie
* Samantha
* Carl

- Hang Time has:

* Julie
* Mary Beth
* Samantha, then Amy, and finally Kristy
* Coach Mike, who replaced Coach Bill

All actress who played their own female characters are still alive. Actors Dolph Sweet and Vic Tayback, who played Carl and Mel, are already dead. Dick Butkus, who played Coach Mike, is still alive and retired nicely from acting as rich person after his show ended its series.

No. No, no, no. I know that not to be the case. You convinced yourself with your own speculation, period. Clearly the "summer" period of the ratings in that list covered April-September. A show wouldn't have to air for the entire summer to rank within that list any more than one would have to air during an entire regular season to rank on that list. Do you think there were additional episodes of Park Place, the show that followed Checking In? If not, why would you insist Checking In had to have had an additional run to appear on the list but not Park Place? Also, Private Benjamin never aired a single repeat that summer, so the rating shown could only have come from episodes aired in April.

Sorry--myth busted.

I'm just saying the book mention checking in aired in the summer of 81 and was the highest rated show

Now the reason for that would probably be because back then there was no DVR and not many people had VCR to record another show while watching another so they had to pick what to watch.

And since checking in aired in the summer when the other shows had reruns people had a chance to check out the show

Hexum sure did. A tragic life cut short for a man in his prime. Not even his replacement could renew the show for a second season. Nowadays the show is largely forgotten by the public.
A DVD is highly unlikely. A music licensing nightmare today. From what I remember the show played a lot of 80's songs since it dealt with the fashion industry as well as the action.
