Most of the black kids at school are ignorant whether it's elementary, middle school, high school, college. I went to a all black school in high school and i must say that was the worst experience of my life because i've never seen so much ignorance. I didn't try to fit in with the ignorant kids and use slang words instead of speaking proper english so therefore i was teased and laughed at all the time. Those 4 years of high school were really bad for me and i wish i hadn't gone to that school. I went to a mixed high school for half of 9th grade and that environment was better for me because i dealt with more white kids and foreigner kids who wanted to learn. There was some black kids at the mixed school i went to but they didn't bother me that much. I had 2 black boy bullies who bothered me but that was it. I was lucky i didn't have any bullies bothering me at the all black high school i went to. Why are blacks so ignorant? What's cool about being ignorant? I don't understand my people.

Don't generalize and say that ALL black schools are terrible. My little cousin attends an all black private school and it's the best education that anyone could get. You should do your homework and stop generalizing. As for colleges, Spelman and Morehouse are fantastic all black colleges.

I wanted to go to Spelman also since it was an all girls college with a lot of history. But I chose tradition, So I went to the college that my Mom, Dad, Aunt and a few cousins went too.

That was part of the reason why I wanted to go, because I heard about it on Cosby :lol: And as I got older and entered High School I read about it and thought that it would be a wonderful school to attend. But I didn't, my own fault. But I'm happy with the college I went to and graduated from.

Our school is like 53% Black, 42% White, then other. Our school gets along well, too. We maybe have one 'fight' a year.

Last year, I worked as family specialist at an elementary school that was roughly 67% Hispanic. I do agree that the ignorance were mainly from teachers, which is just as worse then anything else. You would think being teachers their attitudes would be different or they would have a different view and actually care, but they didn't. I went to several staff meetings and all the teachers did were complain.

Recently, Oprah Winfrey was kind of in the news because she put $40 million into a school for girls in South Africa. When asked why she didn't "invest" the money into a U.S. "inner city" she replied, "The sense that you need to learn just isn't there. If you ask the (inner city) kids (in the U.S.) what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers," she said in Newsweek. "In South Africa, they don't ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so that they can go to school."

While I was a graduate student in the late '90s, I worked as substitute teacher for almost two school years at a couple of Cleveland city high schools. More importantly, though, as someone who attended one of the better public high schools in Cuyahoga County (the county Cleveland is located in, for those unfamiliar) and worked in some of the worst, I can point out major differences.

Racial background has nothing to do with academic performance. It has everything to do with a student's family circumstances and income. The best motivator of a student is his parents. Time and time again, I witnessed that when parents demand their children succeed, they do. Good parents force their children to study and do homework. They expect above average grades. If this begins early enough, a student becomes self-motivated and takes pride in doing well. A two-parent household is not required for a student to be academically successful, but at least one involved parent is, one who absolutely won't accept failure.

Poverty takes a great toll on potential dreams. By this, I mean that it is difficult to make children who are raised in poverty believe that their circumstances can be different. There are not many role models around. Drugs, crime, welfare and public housing do not foster images of personal success. Children raised in these types of environments often feel defeated, as if nothing can possibly be different for them. They simply do not believe in themselves or their ability to change things. It is at this point, young people often turn to the fast money drugs and street crime offers.

Most inner city students do not believe that college is affordable. However, between the federal Pell Grant and state aid, it is financially possible for every lower income student to go to college. A student who begins at a local community college may in fact have his or her entire tuition and books covered in full without loans. This is indeed possible. Students choosing a state university may have to take out a small loan, since aid hasn't kept pace with tuition in the last decade. It remains affordable, though. Excellent students always have chances for full scholarships. The Cleveland City School District does little to inform students and their families just how affordable college can be through state and federal financial aid programs. If a student begins high school knowing college is a real possibility, doesn’t it stand to reason that he just might work harder toward that goal?

Nearly every high-income career requires advanced education. Financial success and academic achievement usually go hand-in-hand. Too often, the only dreams I witnessed students voicing were those of superstar fame: rap star or sports star. The stark reality is, sports and entertainment fame happens only to a fortunate few; everyone else must find gainful employment in the real world.

One thing I should point out to you as well Isiah, being that I was born in the city, my mother placed me in a surburban school when I was in the 1st and 2nd grade as part of the urban-surburban program. Well, they were decent schools and the kids were as bad as city kids. BUT.....one thing they didn't have was a lunch program. We had to take our own lunch everyday. That added up because we grew up poor and lots of time I didn't have good food to take compared to what the other kids were bringing. So after two years in the surburban school, my mother put me back in the city school because they DID have a lunch program. I was qualified to eat free because my mother was a single parent getting assistance. But it seemed to me like the city schools had more money.

Oprah Winfrey shouldn't have been called a sellout for what she said regarding inner city schools. She's telling the truth. Most of the black kids at inner city schools don't wanna learn. Justwondering that's a good response you typed. I went to elementary school in Cleveland so i know what the inner city schools are like here.
