So.

I'm having my wisdom teeth surgery next Friday -- that's 19 January 2007, BTW.

I'm actually looking forward to it. I'm not nervous AT ALL. It was a very long time in coming for me, as I have been dealing with constant on-and-off pain associated with my wisdom teeth since the first pair [on my left side] started growing in, back in late 2001. The other two eventually came in, too- the third tooth finished coming in when I was 18, at the end of 2003. The final one FINALLY showed its face tooth right before I left for NYC in the spring of last year.

I was pretty fortunate - none of my wisdoms are impacted, they didn't come in sideways, etc. They *LOOK* straight if you look into my mouth, but the roots are pretty ****ed up. The root of my bottom left tooth is SEVERELY crooked (luckily, they're pointing AWAY from the molar in front of it, according to my teeth X-rays), and the other three are crooked too but not as bad as that one tooth in question. Still, though, they have to come out and I want them to come out. Stupid constant pain. Ugh.

Anyway, they will be sedating me via IV for the half-hour procedure, and I'm going to have to stay at the surgery place for a bit after the surgery to recover, get painkillers, etc. before they send me home. I'm also going to need round-the-clock supervision to make sure nothing bad happens to me.


So, I'm wondering -- for these of you who have had your wisdoms pulled, I would like to hear about it. How bad were your wisdoms before they were pulled? What method was used? How did you recover from it? (fairly painlessly- didn't need to use many painkillers... Or, BY GOD, GIVE ME THE DAMN VICODIN!!!! I'M IN PAIN!!!!! etc) Anything else? Oh yeah, and how do YOU feel now that you don't have 'em? I"m looking forward to finally having more space in my mouth again- it is too damn crowded in there and I have a hard time already opening my mouth alllll the way to brush these little buggers. Again, I'm not nervous. It's time for a half-decade of tooth trouble to come to a close. :D

I had mine individually done and only local anesthestic, it was not pleasant hearing the cracking noises but if you are out then should not be a problem.

Biggest thing is afterward no smoking or sucking through straws as it will pull out the blood clot and you will get dry socket. Dry socket is horrid, breathing cold air hurts because your nerves are exposed without the clot.

You will be a little sore and swollen but my boss just had his done (all 4) and still managed to show up that evening for a hockey game (watching). I think you will be fine, and remember that the painkillers REALLY kick in after a Guiness lol

Mine were fine, but they were sideways according to the x-rays, so my dentist just said pull them before they start coming in. My parents spent too much money on braces for those worthless teeth to come in and screw everything up.

I had all 4 yanked at the same time. I went under, and when I woke up I had no idea where I was and I cried all the way home for no reason. lol The pain was pretty annoying. 4 Advil pain (the Tylenol w/ Codiene they gave me made me sick). The worst part I think was the after...having to stick gauze and tea bags in your mouth all the time...dry sockets...rincing your mouth with some stuff that if you used it too much it turned your teeth yellow...AND NOT BEING ABLE TO EAT ANYTHING SOLID. I was so sick of milkshakes and jello.

A long time ago I had to have some teeth removed so I could fit into braces. I got the surgery done (I remember it being on October 13th..really unlucky). I also had to be put on an IV- something I have never done before. I was really nervous because I didnt like needles..I got through it, and the whole procedure actually just took about 15 minutes. They told me that I might not need to have my wisdom teeth removed, and at 19 I can feel them growing, but I don't have any pain right now.

Had it done about 5 years ago, mine was like yours roots all screwy, but I had no problems after, didn't need the codine he prescribed. Like someone said the worst part is hearing them work on it, they had to use a mallet to crack mine a little.

Only one of my wisdom teeth ever came in, it was inpacted though. I didn't have an IV just a shot of novacain, I was really sore when that wore off. They gave me codine but it made me sick and kinda loopy so after the first day I just took advil. I was lucky, both of my brothers had all 4 of their wisdom teeth impacted. They were both totally knocked out for that.

I had my out three years ago. I was in no pain at all. I took to many pain killers though and I slept for about three days after though. I would sleep for about ten hours wake up and eat soup and go back to sleep. The next week though I couldn't sleep because of how much I had the week before.

I had mine cut, not pulled, so they put me to sleep. BEST SLEEP I'VE EVER GOTTEN IN MY LIFE! I was completely drugged out, and Jonathan said when I woke up, I tried to put the moves on him right there in the recovery room. He said he had to hold my arms down, cause I kept trying to get up and "rape him" :lol:. Of course, I remember this only vaguley. It was kind of like an out-of-body experience for me. I saw myself acting like this, but couldn't stop myself. The pain medicine they gave me was fabulous too!

I sound like a druggy, :lol:

The only real pain is afterwards, like the 2nd or 3rd day was the worse. And it's more of an uncomfortable soreness. Just dope up and sleep it off. All i ate for 4 days was mash potatoes.

I have to go in at 7:30 in the morning(!), and I can not eat or drink ANYTHING AT ALL starting eight hours before the surgery. I need to brush my teeth before I go in, but no drinking water. Damn, that'll be hard for me. :(

I got some codeine when I sprained my wrist really badly in May of 2005, and the codeine didn't do jack for me (just made me sleepy, didn't kill the pain). So thank goodness I'm getting Vicodin, post-op. Maybe these damn things will ACTUALLY work for me. :lol:

I didn't get a lot of feedback regarding how you guys feel now that you don't have your wisdoms anymore. It's hard for me to remember what my mouth felt, pre-wisdoms (2001 and earlier). I do remember that I had a lot more gaps between my teeth before they came in, and the wisdoms pushed everything into place. I'm just hoping that my mouth doesn't revert back to what it looked like, pre-wisdom teeth.

It was weird, definately spent a few weeks playing with the hole in back of my mouth. Gotta be careful the first little while to keep the food clear to. A friend of mine had the shin grow over and there was food underneaeth, had to go back and get it drained.

it didn't bother me. Until the holes, i guess fill in, i did have a problem getting food stuck back there, but you adapt and get use to it. I don't have a problem at all now. I can't picture having teeth back there now!

As for feedback pre wisdoms, mine were all impacted. I actually didnt have to get them taken out since they didnt bother me, but they said better to get them removed now then later especially if it caused complications. The first few weeks though I refused to put my tongue in the holes because that freaked me out.

Good GOD. I thought you had your wisdoms pulled in 2005. I mean, yeah, I remember when you told us about getting yours pulled, but I was soooooo sure it was in '05 and not '04. Wow, everything just runs together for me now. :crazy:

I would be FREAKED if I had impacted tooth. :faint: It's bad enough that the roots of my wisdoms are ****ed up. :lol: I've NEVER needed seriously major dental work. No braces, mine came in just fine (I was the only sibling in my family that didn't need braces :lol: ). I only needed to get two fillings done, and that was a LOOOOONG time ago, when I was roughly 14 (I'm 21 now). That's it, really. So this will be the first seriously major piece of dental work I'm having done.

I was sedated throughout the surgery, I just remember waking up and having this painful feeling of my bottom lip being pulled up over my face (In reality, it was just numb). Not that I am trying to scare you, but my mouth did not stop bleeding till the next day. I remember having to cough out a lot of blood throughout the whole day. Other then that, it was a cake walk. :lol:

Mine were pretty badly compacted, but the surgery went well....just had to watch what i ate for about a week...liquids only...it was a great diet lol!

dang I was supposed to have my wisdom teeth removed last year. But i'm going to have them suckers removed this year. People say its incredibly painful. and quoting miami heat guard dwyane wade "It'll make a man tell the truth" (after getting wisdom teeth surgery)

Well, it's T-minus 15 hours until I have to go in for the big S.

Still not nervous. Well, I'm a little nervous about getting an IV put in, but that's it. I've never had an IV put in, so I'm hoping it doesn't feel too freaky for me or something. At this time tomorrow, I'll be minus four teeth. :lol:

When I feel up to it, I'll update you guys on how my surgery went. :)

Wow...I didn't get an IV; they put me out with gas. They put what I thought an oxygen tube in my nose and next thing I know I'm in another room. lol

IVs only suck if they can't find a vein and stick you multiple times looking for one. Owww.

I just got home a little while ago.

My mouth is completely numb, and I came out of the sedation pretty quickly, altho I'm still a little drowsy.

Can't feel anything. It went really smoothly. Last thing I remember is somebody taking off my glasses, and that was it.

I hope you get better real fast. My daughter had two wisdom teeth removed over a month ago. She is doing much better now. Her teeth were causing her pain. To her it was worth it.

Yeah, mine were causing me a whole bunch of trouble, and they came in just fine.

I'm bleeding a fair amount but I can't feel anything now. My teeth have no feeling right now. :lol: Waiting for my dad to come home with Vicodin for me. :banana:

The bleeding sucks, as does repeatedly having to replace the gauze, but when you wake up tomorrow, the bleeding will hopefully have slowed down enough to where you don't have to use the gauze anymore.

I got Vicodin and pencillin right after I got home, and I'm typing this with both in my system now... I've already slept for a little while.

Sounds good. Besides, I polished off the last of my stash the other day. So, no more GOOD booze for me for a while, which is just fine with me. :)

I'm not complaining, though. The discomfort is nothing compared to the half-decade of pain I have had to go through WITH them still there.

Amen, sister. I have you beat. I waited ten years to get something done about mine. I finally saw a dentist in 2001, who told me to get them taken out. But I wussed out, and didn't have the surgery until they really started hurting in 2006.

Be glad you had four teeth taken out and not eight teeth like me. ;)

Hasn't bled since... wow, sometime yesterday. The only time I have bleeding is if I do a gargle or brush my teeth, which has been a lot more frequently, due to the funky breath issue happening a lot faster. Even then, the bleeding is VERY minimal. Not like it was when I immediately got out of surgery.

I was instructed to start doing a warm saltwater gargle today, and I have to do that 3x a day for five days (until Thursday). So far, I've only done it once, and it felt soooooo good.

Seriously, Brad. It's like I never even had four teeth pulled AT ALL. All of a sudden, I'm really ****ing HUNGRY and I'm right back to eating solids again. In the morning, I get started with some soup and then by lunchtime, solid foods. I went to pick up a pint of my fave penne pasta salad from the deli here about 1 1/2 hours ago, and when I got home, I devoured it in 15 minutes. It had tomato chunks in it too, and I was diggin' the penne and tomato chunks into my mouth like I hadn't eaten in two weeks.

I'm having all these mad cravings for yummy, crunchy food right now, but I think I better take a rain check on that. :lol: In short, I went to the most amazing surgeon here in town. :) No chipmunk cheeks, either. Well, just a LITTLE. I feel totally fine. :D

I really didn't enjoy the saltwater gargling. At all. It was really nasty. I did enjoy the irrigation tool, which I got a week after my surgery, because it did a really good job cleaning out my extraction sites.

I know, it's crazy. I didn't think I was going to rebound THAT quickly. :lol: I even stocked up on soft foods, just in case.

I already have my irrigation tool, and I have to start that on Wednesday. I got sutures (AGAIN.) so I'm supposed to come in on Wednesday to have the sutures removed. From there, I can irrigate the extraction sites after every meal.

I like doing saltwater gargles, so it doesn't bother me. I do 'em a lot but I do it when I have mucus buildup in my throat (the saltwater gargle REALLY helps to dislodge the mucus... Really works when you have a cold!). So it didn't faze me at all to have to do them again now. :lol:

I had mine out many years ago. All impacted. The roots of one was tangled in a molar and I had the molar removed. I looked like a chipmunk all puffed up.Took pain pills and shortly after was working in a warm room. It was hot day and I felt awful dizzy. I told my boss I just had my wisdom teeth taken out. I guess I went back to work a little too soon. I remember I had a tough time getting my mouth wide open. The muscles were stiff. But I slowly got my jaw open and later could eat anything.

I AM GOING ****ING CRAZY HERE. Okay, I have had a SUPER EASY recovery. I mean SUPER EASY.

It's been nearly a week since I had 'em pulled, and OMG my gums are driving me crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The holes are healing, I'm doing what needs to be done (irrigating bottom extraction sites, etc) and everything looks great (I had my checkup appt yesterday). But UGH. I want to teeth on something really bad right now.

Did anybody else ever have this happen to them after they had theirs pulled? GEESH. I will be soooo happy when the holes finally completely heal, because then I can finally be done with the irrigation thing.
