went up to 7.15 for us. My Gov teacher said in order for that amount of money to be able to buy what she could buy when she was our age, it'd have to be like 8.50.

I make $12 per hour, and here in Washington State, the minimum wage is $7.93. I definitely think the national minimum wage should be raised from $5.15 to something reasonable enough to allow people to live comfortably.

But one problem may be less jobs available. Maybe employers will hire less people; in newspapers, they have heaped tons of work on the employees who weren't pink-slipped or who were bought out of their contracts.

I don't live in the states, but in Canada where I live the minimum wage is a little over $7 an hour. I wish the minimum wage was $10.00 an hour. I think that would be a more fair starting rate, considering how much everything is these days, bills, education and all.

i make $7.10 @ the pharmacy but upwards of $11.00 at the elementary school... add them together and it's good money. but then again, any money is good money for a college student.

Here in Alabama it's only $5.25 an hour, which sucks when you're a college student trying to get a job.

FWIW, and only because it's relevant. If the national minimum wage hike goes through, and it should have the support to do so, it would automatically trump any state minimum wages that are lower (but any higher state minimum wages would be left alone)

(FWIW, KY doesn't have it's own minimum wage, meaning it's $5.15 at the moment.

Living here where I live in California, the higher the minimum wage the better, although it doesn't help when the cost of living is so damn expensive here and it seems that when you buy a home here, you are really paying for the luxury of living here on the coast, by the beach, the climate, etc. Home median prices are approximately $550,000...to rent a decent one room apartment here, the prices are approximately $1200 per month.

Believe it's $5.15 here. Though the minimum wage is really pointless, as if you force a business to pay their employees more they will simply find otherways to recoup that money from the same employees - simple economics. More of a "sounds good on paper" thing than anything else.

I really hope the minimum wage rate is raised because really, $5.15 is nothing when you are a single mother with kids or even just a single person trying to make it. That's pretty much living paycheck to paycheck.

The minimum wage in Alberta is $8.10/hour Canadian, But McDonald's workers start their wages at around $12.25/hour.

Factory workers here, on average, make about $18.00/hour.:)

It overblown because there is a massive labour shortage out here. The unemplyment in Alberta is about 2.9% right now. Those wages are driving up the cost of living to ridiculous levels for rent and basic cost of living prices. Rent in Calgary, for example, is now close to $1500/month. 5 years ago it was around $800/month. So low unemplyment levels are never always all that super sweet to a certain degree. :)

There is a trick to my reply, though. The trick is if you happen to have a job in the oil feilds, you can make $200,000/year as an engineer. If both your Mother and Father make that kind of money, the banks out here in Alberta, technically, will give them a $1 Million dollar loan. But here is the catch. ; Do you think your family can handle a $1 Million loan for 10 years? What if the oil boom goes bust in 5 years, and they lose their jobs? Don't be fooled by these big fat wage offers, in other words. It's never really a "Big" dream. :)
