I don't understand it either, man, and I am black, too. I especially hate when the teenagers just drop the word like it's nothing. I hate it when we say it in front of other races, like hispanics, allowing that race to call each other that. Blacks have a long way to go, I am afraid.

A lot of African Americans says that it's a term of endearment, and that's why they use it. I'm half black and no one in my family (my mom’s side) uses the word at all. I think that it came from slavery times because back then black people use to call each other that because that's what they became accustom to. So I think that's where people now of days get it from. It call comes from our ancestors.

I bet it started out when they were making fun of the white man using it on them and it just stuck.

Being African-American myself, I have no idea why others use the word. I, personally do not use it. I think this question will be forever asked. I disagree with African-Americans using it as a term of endearment because it gives way for other people to use it freely. I guess time will tell if anything will change.

It confuses the heck out of me - I'm not black myself but I'll have black people calling me '*****' and telling me its a compliment and I'm thinking "wtf am I supposed to say back - certainly returning that isn't appropriate!"

I have to agree I don't get why there are African-American people who use the word knowing that it is something that was used to degrade and demean black people. People in my family use the word just like it is any other word. I have never used the word and I cringe when I hear it. :eek:

Okay, I remember that. I think an ex-girlfriend who was black broke his heart and he wrote a song about her by using the n-word. I don't think he ever used the word since.
