I don't think a sitcom today would show a father slapping his daughters in the face. I just watched the episode "Julie Smokes" and Chief struck her across the face because she was smoking behind his back.
I guess maybe in a way it was understandable because cigarettes killed the mother.

You're right. There was a lot more slapping on sitcoms in the 80s then there is now. It brought a serious tone to a show when they wanted to keep you watching. He slapped Katie in the first episode, didn't he?
