Signs and symptoms of a manic episode of bipolar disorder

happy, expansive, optimistic mood (feeling “high,” feeling better than ever)

alternative mood: irritable, angry, aggressive, provocative, intrusive

impaired judgment; reckless; unpredictable

excessive involvement in pleasurable or high risk activities, such as sex, drug or alcohol use, or spending sprees

high physical and mental energy; increased productivity; excited; a feeling of high intelligence and creativity

extremely talkative, rapid thoughts

decreased need for sleep, less ability to sleep

inflated self-importance; in some, delusions or hallucinations

extremely sociable

inability to concentrate; distracted; restless, impulsive

no perception that the mood and behaviors are abnormal
A person in the manic phase of bipolar disorder rarely seeks help; the person may feel good and not recognize that anything is wrong.

Signs and symptoms of a depressive episode of bipolar disorder
profound sadness, hopelessness, pessimism; crying spells

low self-esteem, worthlessness

“flat” mood: apathetic, indifferent; lack of interest or pleasure in most activities

fatigue, lethargy: decreased energy and activity; difficulty getting out of bed in the morning

decreased sexuality

restless, irritable, angry, worried, anxious, guilty

fewer thoughts and less talking; slower thinking and talking

difficulty in concentrating, making decisions, and remembering

social withdrawal; diminished ability to give and feel love

drug or alcohol use

change in appetite; weight gain or loss; loss of interest in food, even if eating more

change in sleep patterns: sleeping more or less than usual

suicidal thoughts, plans, or attempts; life seems devoid of pleasure

I was reading this and I really think I might have this. I think I'm going to make an appointment in the morning.

I hope that you don't have it, Kelly. Seeing the doctor is probably the best bet.

I hope it's not as serious as that, my thoughts are with you.

On a positive not, most people who suffer from it, didn't realize that they did until it was pointed out to them. So the fact that you suspect you might suffer from it, may mean that you don't...if you know what I mean (I hope that made sense).

Also, regardless of how severe your depression is, seeing someone about it is definitely the right step, so I'm glad you've decided to put on a appointment.

All the best, and please keep us updated, if you want to.

Thanks.

Well actually, some of this behavior my mother told me. Sometimes I just talk soo much, even while everyone else is on TV. Then sometimes I walk around, blank like. I don't talk at all. Some of it is weird. I did however ask my mom to make an appointment for me.

well if that's the case, i'm bi-polar too. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be afraid to say that going by that, over half the people here at SO are bi-polar.

In all seriousness, do NOT let this worry you to death! If you are concerned with it, see a doctor. He will be able to properly diagnose the difference between bi-polar, and typical teenage (as a matter of fact, typical woman, human, etc) behavior :) Keep us updated.

just be careful not to diagnois souly on that...

a lot of ppl read symptoms to stuff and feel they have it, however, based on the above, maybe you should talk to like a family doctor?

Personally, I have bipolar, but it's treatable (not curable as far as I know)

PM if you want more info :)
