View Full Version : Monkees or Partridge?!! hippiechick60 01-01-2007, 07:30 PM which "made up for tv show band" do you perfer the most?!! gidgetgrape 01-01-2007, 08:02 PM I LOVE both shows, but I like the Monkees' songs better. HelloLarry 01-10-2007, 02:07 PM Interesting comparison however I think the P Family is more akin to the antics of the Brady Bunch than the Monkees. The songs are more on the same level and they were family sitcoms. The Monkees is unique and in a class all by itself IMO. The music was light and poppy as some of the PFamily music but it did get a little more sophisticated (for what it was) as it went along whereas the PFamily always remained pretty gounded in its original concept. However (and people usually laugh when I say this) I think the PFamily is much better written show than the Brady Bunch. I find more adult type humor and jokes in the show and laugh at it still today becuase its funny. With the BBunch, I still appreciate the show but it is more from a nostalgic perspective. The writing is very 'safe'. I know this doesn't address your original question but I just wanted to chime in with my opinion. D Lee G 01-10-2007, 03:42 PM I never cared for The Monkees, the TV show or the music. The Partridge Family as a sitcom was awful, the music was good in the beginning but went downhill later on. The Partridge Family Album, Up To Date, and Sound Magazine are pop classics and are the only three Partridge albums worth owning. After Sound Magazine, the music got progressively worse. As a sitcom, I prefer The Brady Bunch over The Partridge Family. In my opinion, Brady Bunch is the better show. More entertaining, more fun to watch. I used to watch The Partridge Family back in the day during the first couple seasons only to find out what song they were going to sing. AB 01-10-2007, 04:44 PM I'm leaning more to the Partridge Family but I do like both. hippiechick60 01-10-2007, 07:55 PM hey i'm sorry but this is for people that love the monkees, for monkees fans! and the brady bunch lol!!! oh my God!!! people they suck they were so dumb and very very simple minded and they didn't have half of what the monkees had!! oh and the pfamily!!! lol just as bad they didn't have half of what the monkees had either!! and has much as i like hearing other peoples opion about stuff like this...i for one are such a big monkees fan that i just get really ticked off if anybody says anything bad about the monkees! i'm sorry but i just totally disagree with you all on that one a 110%!! LONG LIVE THE MONKEES!!!! HelloLarry 01-10-2007, 10:50 PM Please take a deep breath Hippiechick. Im afraid my original post may cause you to burst a vein or something. :)) I hope I didn't start anything here. What my point was (hopefully that I got across) I love the Monkees too, there are so many memories tied with the show and the music. I just think the Monkees were more of a cool concept from the perspective that they became the band that they were originally hired to play on the show. With the PFamily, they were never that daring because nobody, save for DC, could play an instrument and you couldn't really tell the difference in their music if you put a song on from say Crossword Puzzle and then Up to Date which is why I see them muscially and visually more related to the Brady Bunch, which I also like (just not as much). With the Monkees, although they were at the hands of various producers throughout their career, there is a different sound to their music as they progressed and the show is much cooler than the PFamily sitcom because its anti-sitcom. However, whichever is better is a matter of taste and how cool we can all chime in with an opinion for these shows are all still alive 30-40 years later. hippiechick60 01-11-2007, 01:46 PM yeah well i guess so! Lee G 01-12-2007, 11:08 AM The Monkees TV show is totally whacked out. A person needs to watch this in the dark with strobe lights flashing and have a good buzz on in order to get the full effect. The episodes are way over the top, and the plots make absolutely no sense whatsoever. HelloLarry 01-12-2007, 05:34 PM I don't think one would watch a Monkees episode for 'plot' much the same as they wouldn't watch an episode of ER to see the doctors do a fun romp with "Steppin' Stone" playing in the background. That's why I kinda think its 'anti' sitcom. However, on that subject, most sitcoms have pretty inane plots to begin with. I wish I could wrap an issue up in 26 minutes...even better 22 minutes if I was doing it in syndication. :) Ive never watched an episode of the Monkees under the conditions you describe Lee and it still managed to entertain me and remains one of my favorite shows to this day. It has about as much 'plot' as say, The Abbott and Costello Show or Seinfeld. It just makes me laugh but if what you are describing would enhance my viewing pleasure, then maybe Ive been missing out on something all these years. I love what you posted though! Lee G 01-12-2007, 06:45 PM I don't think one would watch a Monkees episode for 'plot' much the same as they wouldn't watch an episode of ER to see the doctors do a fun romp with "Steppin' Stone" playing in the background. I love what you posted though! Glad you enjoyed the post. One other thing I forgot to recommend for Monkees viewing is incense burning. It will enhance the experience. Hang some bead curtains as well. So flip off the lights, get the strobes flashin, burn that incense and you'll be all set for the complete Monkees experience. ;) HelloLarry 01-12-2007, 07:58 PM It would probably help to have a guitar in my hand with no strings and strum it like a madman pretending like I know how to play my own instruments. Damn! Now you got me doing it. :rotflmao: hippiechick60 01-14-2007, 01:06 PM oh what do any of you know! and if you all are unaware this is talk about the monkees not dising them! you guys know nothing about them! it just wasn't about there shows that i'm a big fan of and it isn't all just about there shows that made up the monkees either! i like the monkees cause they fought to be takeing seriously! and to be a real group and not just play one on tv! i deeply admire them for all of that! and if you guys can't see past there "burn out tv shows" or whatever the heck you call them! then you are not a monkees fan and know nothing about them! so the next time you want to talk about them like that then don't! cause it just oftens me even more! i don't care what you guys have to say about them they were great and even though there not the monkees anymore doesn't matter i mean people are still fans of the beatles even though they're a lot diffrent from the monkees but you know what i mean! so watch what you say from now on ok! cause i'm looking to attack anything unnice you all have to say about them! LONG LIVE THE MONKEES!!! AND IF YOUR NOT DOWN WITH THAT I'VE GOT TWO WORDS FOR YA SUCK IT!!!!!!! HelloLarry 01-15-2007, 01:54 AM Please don't misunderstand me, I enjoy their show and music very much and think the story of how they were a tv show and then became a band and realized they mediocre at both is fascinating. I mean, watching them 'perform' Don't Call On Me on the TV show and seeing Davy going all Jimi Hendrix with his maracas when the song is all acoustic is absolute genius. "Who writes that stuff?" - Rupert Crosse I've only been joking around, I really dig the Monkees and have for years; listening to their music makes me feel like Im 12 and have hair again. I just like to have fun with it once in a while, no offense intended. I think they're just great and actually have met all of them over the years. Cool story, Michael was at the Cubby Bear here in Chicago about 15 years ago (whenever his solo catalog was first reissued on Awareness) and the place was PACKED...and not just because its a Wrigleyville bar but because they really liked Michael. The place went nuts and I think he was even a little surprised. After he finished one of the tunes (don't recall specifically which one) he humbly said "Boy, you really are fans." Verrry cool moment. Didn't mean to raise your bp again Hippiechick (it was Lee G's bad influence and unnice comments that made me say that last remark about the instruments) See what you did Lee?? Honestly...Im just having some fun. AB 01-15-2007, 02:03 AM I thought this was a poll, so there shouldn't be a right or wrong answer. Did I misunderstand? HelloLarry 01-15-2007, 10:40 AM Yes it started out as a poll and I had some additional thoughts on the comparison that I wanted to share which started the ball rolling. hippiechick60 01-15-2007, 03:18 PM yeah well whatever i just don't like it when people say stuff like that so just watch it from now on ok! Lee G 01-15-2007, 04:26 PM Didn't mean to raise your bp again Hippiechick (it was Lee G's bad influence and unnice comments that made me say that last remark about the instruments) See what you did Lee?? Man, that chick needs to chill. At least you and I appear to have a sense of humor. We were pokin a little fun at The Monkees, I really don't give a rap whether she likes it or not. Lee G 01-15-2007, 04:47 PM yeah well whatever i just don't like it when people say stuff like that so just watch it from now on ok! LOL since when are you in charge of the board? You need to relax and take a chill pill. If I have something to say here I will post it, no harm or foul intended. Just havin a little fun. :D HelloLarry 01-15-2007, 05:28 PM I just checked and with a whopping 5 votes, I can tell that this poll weighs heavy on the minds of Americans. The Partridge Family is leading by the way 3-2 which is odd; probably because they don't require special lighting to watch or listen. Now Im from Chicago so Im pretty used to bullying to get votes but c'mon now! :) I think hippiechick could use a hug. For the record...I Wanna Be Free sounds much better with a blunt. Thanks again for the tips Lee G, you made my weekend. Im gonna go listen to my Bobby Sherman CD. Lee G 01-15-2007, 05:39 PM I just checked and with a whopping 5 votes, I can tell that this poll weighs heavy on the minds of Americans. Julie, Julie, Julie do ya love me... :barf:  HelloLarry 01-15-2007, 05:42 PM I was gonna go DeFranco Family but I thought that might have been a little obscure. Actually I brought along some episodes of David Cassidy-Man Undercover to watch before the next two episodes of 24 tonight. Lee G 01-15-2007, 06:03 PM I was gonna go DeFranco Family but I thought that might have been a little obscure. Actually I brought along some episodes of David Cassidy-Man Undercover to watch before the next two episodes of 24 tonight. DeFranco Family...one huge hit, one minor hit and then they were gone if I recall correctly. Funny that you mention David Cassidy-Man Undercover. I have those episodes, uncut and very nice quality as well. It's not that bad a show, not a classic but definitely underrated. The first five episodes are a little better than the last five. The show has a good theme song also, trendy for the time. And it's a hoot watching Cassidy getting tough with the criminals. It's such a far cry from his Partridge days, he was trying to change his image. But he played the part pretty well, the show had weak writing and that was probably the main cause for it's downfall. HelloLarry 01-17-2007, 05:42 PM So what is this? There is a poll on a Monkees message board and they lose to the P-Family (which is what they would be called if they were rappers). Whats up with that? Yooch 01-17-2007, 07:07 PM Monkees. hippiechick60 01-17-2007, 07:52 PM  ohhhhh i,i need to chill huh?!!! well you know what all?!! i don't give a fu***** (excuse me!) if you don't or do like the monkees in fact i'm sorry i post this damn thing in the frist place! cause its simple to see that you aren't taking anything i have to say about the monkees or anything like that serously! and as for YOU Lee G maybe i don't give a damn what you think either huh! God i'm so sick and tired of fighting about the most dumbest things in the world! so please just stop posting anything thing more on this board ok! if its not nice or if its just to yell at me or "talk about me" like i don't read it! then please don't post anything on this board ok! i never was the kind of person to get all un glued about this kind of stuff! but its just getting to the point now where i don't really care anymore! i love the monkees and i don't really care what you guys have to say about them or anything else for that matter! i swear sometimes i think i'm turning into someone like Paris on the Gilmore Girls! so please, please if your not tending to say anything nice or monkees related then please don't post anything on here! i'm tired of it all and if you do then you'll get so more replys from me ok! cause the poll is now closed and i quit! thank you! HelloLarry 01-25-2007, 07:28 PM so what are you trying to say? All You Need is Love hippiechick. Ooops, sorry wrong group. ;) |
