View Full Version : Shows that weren't given enough time

TVLAND's behind the scenes look at the Dick Van Dyke Show reminded us that DVD was origanally cancelled after the first season.

Many great shows didn't start out as hits. Two more great examples are All In The Family and Seinfeld. Here are two shows that I think the networks should have stuck with a little longer.

From last year, NBC's Stark Raving Mad. Anyone who loved The Odd Couple would have loved this show.

From a few years ago, Fox's Flying Blind. This show starred Tea Leone. I reminded me of something that might have come from Woody Allen.

So many shows are cancelled today after 5-6 episodes air. Why don't network programming people take a lesson from television history and give shows a little time to develop an audience?

I agree. But it was not ABC that decided to take off seinfeld, it was Jerry Seinfeld himself. he felt that the show was at it's height and he didn't want the show to go down after that as a flop and him get a bad reputation. I personally think the show could have at least gone for the longest running sitcom which is what 12 years (Happy Days)? I thin seinfeld ran for 10 right? It could have easily I beleive gone 5 more. and then some even. Other shows that weren't given chances are:

Teen Angel (Marsha on the brady bunch was also on it)
You wish
Two of a Kind
And there was this show on Tuesday nights like a year ago about this old guy that owned a book store or something and this other guy always annoyed him. Do you remember that? Does anyone? That was funny.

I was talking about Seinfeld at the beginning of its run, not the end.

My point was that Seinfeld was not immediately a top rated show. It began on NBC opposite Home Improvement when Home Improvement was at its peak. I don't mean to suggest that NBC contemplated cancelling Seinfeld at the beginning of its run. However, it was not an immediate hit.

BTW, I think the show about the bookstore owner that you're thinking of was George & Leo with Bob Newhart and Judd Hirsh.

Bob Newhart's television history further illustrates my point. His first two very successful series The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart both had minor re-toolings (cast/character changes) at the beginning of their runs. Maybe if Newhart's other series Bob and George & Leo hadn't been cancelled during their first season, they would have found an audience.

Happy Days only ran for, like, 10 1/2-11 years, not 12... Anyway, you're right with shows like You Wish and Teen Angel and Two of a Kind not getting a chance.. But personally, I don't think it would have helped Two of a Kind. The Olsen twins were cutes as kids but now they're teenagers and still doing kid shows and movies... I mean, personally, Passport to Paris was the stupidest, dumbest movie I have ever seen. And the Two of a Kind reruns on Fox Family are starting to make me sick. They air the show like, 4 times a day. I mean, they show the entire run of the show in 5 or 6 days! Once a day is enough...

And personally, I love the Odd Couple... okay, I've only seen one episode, but I loved it! I loved it a lot!! And with Stark Raving Mad... God knows how many times I tried to watch it. I hated it.

Here is my 2 cents worth...

THE CHARMINGS- Not emmy worthy material (It was produced by the same team that produced The NANNY, after all) but it was very funny and a good way to kill 30 mins.

HAIL TO THE CHIEF- A comedy serial from the creator of SOAP starring Patty Duke as the first woman President. The show had great writing but because at that time, It wasn't acceptable to show a President with flaws and a family that was less than perfect, the show was yanked.

GOLDEN PALACE- The GOLDEN GIRLS spinoff had trouble at first finding it's nich without Bea Arthur but halfway through the first season, It seemed more cohesive, certainly more entertaining than the last season of the GG had been!!

I'm sure I could think of more but i have to go to work.

I agree with "The Charmings" needing to have had a little more time... but it also needed new writers. When watching that show, you cold tell that *one* of the writers was writing for the premise "Prince Charming and Snow White, magicaly transported to modern day America), and all the other writers where writing a standard sit com. If they had concentrated more on the original premise, that show could have been great!

However, my favorite show that didn't get the proper chance was "Home Boys in Outer Space". If it had been a little less "wacky", it would have been excellent! We here in America need a good sci-fi comedy. One that's actually sci-fi, not just a science fiction element thrown in to a regular sit com (Mork & Mindy, Alf, 3rd Rock From The Sun).

I never could get into HOMEBOYS. I guess it was because I was thinking it was rip off of the Brit-com, RED DWARF but with a black cast. Since then I keep hearing that it has a cult following so If the possiblity came around I would watch it again and give it another try.

BTW, I told you I would think of more and I have...

TABITHA- The BEWITCHED spin off with Lisa Hartman.

THE POWERS THAT BE- the Norman Lear comedy with William Forthsyth (sp) as a naive senator and his crazy family.

I totally agree LS. Two of a kind was just dumb. The Olsen twins were cute in like full house but now that they are older they try to be really cool and crap like that and they date and stuff and it's a joke cause they're only like 5 feet tall! IT's actually kinda funny how much they air a show that only had like 10 episodes! And now they still want to be really "in" and popular and have everyone still love them and it's just a joke. I think we are like minded on the subject. And yes the show needed more time but it wouldn't have taken off that great anyway. I mean come on! it started out in the friday night line-up! It didn't have a chance! Speaking of which, don't you thin "sabrina the teenage witch" has aired long enough?!?! I mean come on! How long can sabrina be a teenager! she's like 25 now! a 25 year old teenager! I don't think so! And I heard somewhere she has a contract for *4 more years*!!!!!!! Can you beleive that?!?!?!? The show aint that great!
Anyway. Let me know what you think.

Odd Man Out - I mean, they have it 13 episodes! It was so funny!!!

Two of a Kind - it got annoying, but really should have been given more time

Space Cases - My all time favorite Nick show. They have to 2 seasons, 26 episodes, but a 7 season plan had been made in order for us to see the resolution of the series. It had an awful ending.

You all are raising valid points in this thread. But how can you tell if a series should have more time? Do you guys think that any series should always have, say, two years or so? Or is there any such thing as a series so bad that it should be immediately canned? I guess you can argue that some series should not have ever got on the air. But once a series is filmed, why not show a few episodes and see what happens?

I think some shows need to go immediately.

One example is "Rango". How many of you remember that? I didn't think so. On the other hand, every series always finds a few fans who love it. I'm still mad at NBC for cancelling "Occaisonal Bride".

So the networks have a tough job. Any decision thay make will irritate someone.

Yes but a sitcom should usually have at least 1 season...(Note: bit enphasis on USUALLY) some of them that really reak though are ok to ditch after a few eps.

"The Mike O'Malley Show" was not given a lot time. It only had like 2 episodes. There was this one sitcom called "Mr. Roades", which only had like 10 eps. I dont know why FFC is airing TOAK.

I'd have to say Freeks and Geeks. It is really a good show and I can still see the few episodes on Fox Family. I know that they canceled it because people were not watching it but it was definitely in the category of "Best Show That No One Watches". The network should have given it a little more time and maybe a good time slot to attract and warm up viewers. Thoughts?

The commercials didn't do justice for the show. It's actually pretty good to watch. It even got critic acclaim but it debuted on the worst night for tv, saturday night so it didn't get a strong viewership. And believe me there has been worst shows to be considered as the stupidest show ever on tv.

Does anyone remember the sitcom Guys Like Us on UPN? It was the greatest! It was funny and clever and was something everyone could enjoy. The 2 main stars were cute, too. If anyone knows why UPN pulled it off the air or where I can find more info on the show, I'd be grateful! Bring back Guys Like Us!!!!

The 1982 sitcom "Square Pegs" starring a very young Sarah Jessica Parker as a misfit highschool student, only lasted one season. I only barely remember it, but my older brother thought it was great! It is described in the Internet Movie Database as "too good for TV", and it seems to have been the inspiration for the "Revenge of the Nerds" movies.

Get A Life Died too young. Fox Had a cult hit on it's hands, and never gave the show the push it deserved. A Third season would've been better than a TV Show should be! Especially after the SPEWEY episodeat the end of season two...

Family Guy is another show Fox has been giving the shaft to. They let the Simpsons linger on and decline more and more as the episodes go on, and they show crap like Malcolm in the Middle (which is nothing but a Simpsons/Family Guy rip-off done live action in the first place), yet they never give Family Guy the chance to gain an audiance. Give FG 3 Months in the SImpsons time slot, and it'll be Fox's most popular show.

This isn't really a sitcom, but it is a comedy:

THE BEN STILLER SHOW!

One of the best attempts to take some of the audience that would watch Saturday Night Live, and FOX kills it off in mid-season! The Bastards! The last episode ran on HBO, and now if you want to see any of them, you've got to go to one of the Museums of Televison & Radio, in either New York City or LaLa Land.

I wouldn't consider it a sitcom, but defitely Freaks and Geeks was a good show that was pulled off the schedule too quickly. I know it aired on Saturday nights so I usually missed it myself but the eps I caught on cable have been hilarious.

In earlier times the networks seemed to give these promising young shows a chance to develop an audience but today they will not hesitate to yank it off immediatley if the ratings are not high. Another show that was popular in the 80's, "Facts of Life" would've been cancelled immediately today instead of given the facelift it required to make it a hit series.

Does anyone remember "Our House"? It starred Shannen Doherty, Wilfred Brimley, Chad Allan, and Deidre Hall, and it was on for only a couple of seasons in the mid-late 1980s. It was cancelled before its due IMHO.

As for the network on which it aired, I do not know. However, the Odyssey network was airing reruns of it 2-3 years ago.

OK, a few years back I was highly anticipating a new show coming out with Glenn Frey of the rock group "Eagles" starring in it. I taped the first episide and then it was cancelled. Why in the world would they do that? One SHOW? It never came on again. I thought it was a good first show. They don't give some new shows a chance at all. Stark Raving Mad was a very funny show. Freaks and Geeks was also excellent, I really looked forward to watching that show, but they kept moving it around and had it on Saturday nights, when the audience it was geared for would not be home to watch. Even though it took place in the early 80's, anyone who's gone through high school could relate to someone or something on the show.

I loved the episode where they had a party and the little brother's friend called the cops so he wouldn't have to.

Networks today never give any show "enough time". Its really all about ratings and the almighty dollar, If a show isnt doing good in the ratings, it gets cancelled (Tucker, Daddio, Bette, The Michael Richards Show), shelved (The Weber Show) or put on hiatus (Welcome to New York). There have been many shows that were hilarious but if the networks arent getting any money from the show, its gone, sometimes it comes back but other times, sadly, it does not.

THE CHARMINGS

ABC is just stupid for canceling my favorite show, The Charmings, back in 1988. I thought that the episodes started getting better once Carol Huston (you know, Jerri Stone on the last season of Matlock) became Snow White, Caitlin O'Heaney sometimes was just annoying. But, of course, the Mirror and Lillian stole the show each time. I was hyped when I saw Judy Parfitt (played Lillian) on ER a few times, she plays the mother of the doctor that just recently had a baby/got married (forget her name). I really haven't seen the rest of the cast besides Paul Winfield.

My favorite episodes are Lillian Loses Her Powers, Charmings Go Plastic, Cindy's Back In Town, Yes Lillian There Is A Santa Claus (I love when i snows in the kitchen lol), and Trading Places.

TVLAND needs to get this and air it on the weekends or something!

Overkill ran too short. So yeah it was on 10 years but the final 2 were in syndication in which NOBODY watched.Comon' "Jay-Jay Loses his Mojo","Kevin on Top" and "GOT MILK?" were the funniest Television episodes that ever were. What other show can have a "Street Smart" Talent Agent (Ken Testa) think hes "No Longer" cool which drives a store owner (Amie Hoey) into making 70s night at her store. The first 4 seasons were ehh but the final 6 were great!!! Jay-Jay,Kevin,Donna,Randuke,Rose and Steve were just some of the greatest Recurring characters that a sitcom has ever seen. The Finale was only ok and the clip show was pointless (They weren't the best clips more like the silliest moments)but the other episodes were great. The first season was the worst from the series and Linda (Kate Mustang) annoyed me.Janice was ok.Rick was blah.Kay was pointless and Randuke was brillient.Rosie O' Donell was perfect as Rose and Tara Reid gave a grand performance as Donna.David Letterman (as Kevin) gave out great one liners and Steve Martin was perfect as Fast Talking Steve Bishop.I have to admit this was a cult hit but it didn't deserve Syndication http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/frown.gif I have an Overkill Website at http://www.Geocities.com/yoyip2000/Overkill.html (http://www.Geocities,com/yoyip2000/Overkill.html)

Okay..this isn't a sitcom, but still it should've ran a bit longer. My choice would have to be "The Magnificent Seven". That show kicked ass when I caught the reruns on TNN, but now TNN has took it off. Here are the cast and characters to TM7

Anthony Starke....Ezra
Dale Midkiff......Buck
Eric Close........Vinn
Michael Biehn.....Chris
Andrew Kavoit.....JD
Ron Pearlman......Josiah
Rick Worthy......Nathan

But the show kicked ass and they took it off. Go figure..

A show that just got cancelled that should have gotten more time was the Lone Gunmen. This show was very creative, unique and most important, hysterical. You can't beat watching blind men playing football. Unfortunately the show fell into the black hole that is Fox Friday nights.

NBC should have never cancelled Jesse, Working, and Men Behaving Badley only after two sasons. They were funny shows.
The WB should have kept Smart Guy for at least two more seasons. So we could have seen T.J., Marcus, and Mo high school graduation and one year while there were in collage.

How about "Homefront", the 1991-93 ABC show about three soldiers returning to their Ohio hometown after World War II? This isnt a sitcom but I can't believe it hasn't been mentioned. I think Fox really messed up cancelling "Beyond Belief"...who's with me? That show was unbelievable. I know they brought it back for a while after cancelling it the first time..but they gave it less than a month and cancelled it again permanently..I can't uderstand decisions like these:

cancelling Family Guy..Fox's greatest error in the last ten years atleast.

cancelling Freaks and Geeks...indeed a quality show in many ways

and I know it was a little ahead of its time but if you remember the one week that John Leguizamo's "House of Buggin" was on..(and by a stroke of luck are hispanic) you probably remember how hilarious the the good skits were.

oh well. What do you guys think about these shows?

"The Ropers" (1979-1980) - It was in the Top 30 when it was cancled..... ABC was stupid!

One of CBS' sins was to cancel Valerie Harper's series "City", which was a very good show with great acting and wit. It's too bad it didn't last.

Also, CBS cancelled the show "The Five Mrs. Buchanans" which deserved to last as long as "Golden Girls" and "Designing Women". While similar to these 2 shows in format (they were women's shows), the acting was phenomenal and the writing got better and better. I think had it been given a chance it would have become a solid hit. But no, it was aired on and off on Saturday nights. I only hope that sometime in the future the show turns up again on the LIFETIME cable channel, and maybe the cable channel would have new shows made. Anyone know how to set something like that in motion?

Lastly, CBS cancelled Jason Bateman's comedy "Some of My Best Friends". While another gay comedy may seem cliché at this point of time, the show was still decent. It still made me laugh, and the acting was impeccable. But no, CBS aired it on & off Wednesday nights. It was doomed from the start...

Sigh...

"The Associates" (ABC 1979-'80) had a great cast, plus the creative team from "Taxi".
It should have been given more time, the writing was great. Another was "Good Time Harry" (NBC 1980) Starring Ted Bessell, Marcia Strassman, Eugene Roche. Again a
great cast, smart writing. NBC buried it with
a rotten time slot (Saturdays at 10PM).

Clerks: The Animated Series.

Only six episodes were produced, two were aired, and the first one was the only one I saw.

"Gloria" (1982-1983)- It was in the top 20! Just because ABP was cancelled doesn't mean they should cancel it too!

"Soap" should definitely have lasted more than four seasons, considering it was the greatest comedy show of all time.
"Gloria" should have been given more time; Sally Struthers is terrific and Gloria Stivic was such a great character that the show probably could have been very good.

Welcome to New York

All these shows, given more time could have made it. They were good. Networks dont take chances anymore, they need to understand is if they want a hit it needs to take time to become a hit. A show may be good, but people just dont have time to watch it. The word needs to get out. A few people watch, tell friends, then more people will watch. I think all shows should be given a two year contract. I remember hearing on the E network that Cheers wasnt very successful its first year. That summer, they played reruns, and went around promoting it. It did very well its next season. And look, it lasted 11 seasons. Facts of Life was the same way. When shows keep getting canceled it keeps drawing me away from watching tv, i get so sick of liking a show then seeing it cancelled. it gets annoying. It makes me want to even stop watching tv. Just watch the shows that are keeping going tell they end and then guit watching from there. But i wont. So o well.

Cybiil was only on for three years, and it was a top ten show.

Phenom wasn't given enough time.

Maybe this time should hav elasted longer.

Popular need's another season.

Five pages of replies and nobody mentioned 'It's like, you know...'???
Does nobody know this show? This show about Arthur Garment, a New Yorker who despises Los Angeles, but stays there with his LA-friend Robbie, to write a book about it: "L.A. How can you stomach it?"
This show was hilarious, and in many ways, like Seinfeld, a 'show about nothing', but this time , unlike Seinfeld, FUNNY!
I would've loved to see the series and characters to develop, cause I would like to know what became of Arthur's crush on that girl who only wanted to be friends...

Robbie..........Steven Eckholdt
Arthur...........Chris Eigeman
And Jennifer Gray as herself!

Funny Face was a 1971 TV show starring Sandy Duncan as Sandy Stockton, a UCLA student. The show was cancelled less than 3 months after its premiere, because Duncan was diagnosed with a brain tumour and had to undergo eye surgery. The show didn't even have low ratings, it was the #8 show in the 1971-72 television season.
