View Full Version : Overrated show
Lee G 12-29-2006, 11:43 AM I never did like The Andy Griffith Show. It is overly sappy and sentimental. And I always found Andy Griffith himself to be annoying, he was always preaching to people. And Don Knotts as that bug eyed buffoon of a deputy. No matter what show or movie Knotts was in, he always played a nervous type of person. That act wears thin with me real quick. And Ronny Howard is a bland actor. He was bland in Andy Griffith, and was the same way in Happy Days. I'm not surprised he ended up working behind the camera. And the dumb characters in the show like Floyd the barber and Otis the drunk. In my humble opinion- If you want to see a good rural sitcom, watch Green Acres. Great characters, humorous dialogue, and hilarious sight gags.
omg65 12-29-2006, 12:50 PM I enjoyed Andy Griffith when I was younger but as I get older I don't enjoy it as much.Maybe it's because my tastes have changed or maybe it's because TV Land overplays it wayyy to much.Lately I have enjoyed the colored episodes more than the black and white ones.I hate to say it's overrated because it's still 20 times better than anything put out the last 25 years.I think the storylines on Andy Griffith were the shows stregnth.I will say the best season of the Show IMO was the year of the Gomer Pyle character.
I agree wholeheartedly about Green Acres. That was probably the most brilliant and cleverly written sitcom of all time. The timing of the actors and the chemistry of that show will never be duplicated. It's my personal favorite show ever.It was just riotously hilarious for people like me who understood it.Couldn't you just feel for poor Mr Douglas the only sane person in a town of nut cases? What's even funnier is that his wife fit right in while he never could. That show was truly underrated and misunderstood by the so called sophisticated people that watched boring and truly wayyyyyy overrated shows like MASH.

Yep, I agree with you. Do you have seasons 1, 2, & 3 of Green Acres on DVD? I hope they will issue the other seasons also. It's been a bit of a wait for season four.

I have seasons 1 and 2 and will be getting 3 shortly.I have been recording Green Acres for the last 2 months off TV Land and will have most of the episodes from seasons 4-6.They always skip some episodes though.

That's nice. So, might I ask why are you posting this in an ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW forum??
I mean, hell, I don't like Seinfeld...I think it's perhaps the most nihilistic show in the history of television and it doesn't do a thing for me but, I don't bother bashing it in a SEINFELD forum.
What's the point? :bash:

I guess it is a good thing there are other channels for you to watch then. Please don't come on here and bash something we all so dearly love. If you have nothing nice to say then keep it to yourself.....I mean this in the kindest possible way.
Lee G 01-02-2007, 11:26 AM That's nice. So, might I ask why are you posting this in an ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW forum??
Because I felt like posting my opinion.

If you don't like Seinfeld, then go on the Seinfeld board and post your opinion. Don't be shy. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, it doesn't mean you're trying to start a dispute.

I wanted to post my opinion, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. There is nothing that says if you don't like a show, you can't post on the board. The boards are open for all comments about TV shows, both pro and con. Different opinions can make for interesting discussion.
Janice 01-11-2007, 12:17 PM There is nothing that says if you don't like a show, you can't post on the board.
Actually there is a rule against members offering only criticism about a show. Rule #8.

Right on.There is nothing wrond with your voicing your opinion. His post isn't negatve he's basically asking what other people think of the show. This mesage is not negative.
Mr. Television 01-11-2007, 02:38 PM Actually I think the AGS is one of the best sitcoms of all time. It along with The Beverly Hillbillies are my favorite sitcoms from the 60's. I agree Green Acres is good too. You should go to that board and post possitive feedback instead of coming to the AGS to bash it. Or at least post this thread on the general sitcoms board. Most of the people who post on the different sitcom boards are fans of that particular show and it causes fights when someone goes over there just to bash a show. I mean I can't stand Friends but I would never go to that Board just to bash it.
showfan 02-05-2007, 09:00 AM I don't think the entertainment industry is waving a banner saying that The Andy Griffith Show is the greatest show of all time. I think the people is what has made it so great. As I understand it, it has never been off the air in reruns. I'm sure ratings for those reruns are the reason. After a show remains so popular in the ratings for 40 years, a lot of people just have to say, WOW!! I also think the show didn't rely on actual jokes, it just drew humor from the everyday people and situations. Having grown up in a small town, I certainly relate to The Andy Griffith Show more than any other rural comedy.
I never get tired of watching Andy, Barney & the gang, its one of my favorites. There are so many good shows from the past, that there are not
enough hours in the day to watch them all. So pick your favorites and sit back and enjoy and if you don't like a show, don't watch it.
Lee G 02-05-2007, 04:44 PM I can't stand Friends but I would never go to that Board just to bash it.
Why not? Don't be shy, if you don't like Friends then log on the board and post your opinion. It doesn't have to mean you're trying to start a dispute, everyone has a right to their opinion whether it be pro or con.
Lee G 02-05-2007, 04:47 PM if you don't like a show, don't watch it.
That's right, I don't watch it. In my humble opinion, Andy Griffith is wayyyyy overrated.
dav4463 02-13-2007, 06:05 AM Andy Griffith is the greatest show on the planet ! I can watch it over and over again. Green Acres is OK, but it is like comparing high school football to the NFL, or McDonalds to a fine steakhouse...get the picture?

Yep, I got it crystal clear. Green Acres is the NFL, Andy Griffith is high school football. Green Acres is the fine steakhouse, Andy Griffith is McDonalds.
Green Acres is just plain funny and it's a lot of fun to watch. It has silly moments but the humor outweighs the silliness. Andy Griffith is too sentimental and gets overly sappy at times. It all depends what type of show you prefer.
dav4463 02-18-2007, 04:37 AM Some people think Gerry and the Pacemakers and the Dave Clark Five were better than the Beatles and The Who also!

Oh man, The Beatles and The Who are way overrated. So are The Rolling Stones. Include groups like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin in that category also, individual performers like the late Elvis Presley, and the more recent, modern groups like U2. All of them are WAY overrated. These people are over-commercialized, designed to appeal to the masses who don't have a mind of their own and will buy into anything just because the DJ on the radio tells them to.

You wrote a true statement with, "It all depends on what type of show you prefer." Therefore, the comments you wrote prior to that are 100% true according to your tastes, and 100% false according to some other's tastes.
Scoobiedoo30 03-01-2007, 06:52 PM I dont think that The Andy Griffith Show is an Overrated Show
dav4463 03-07-2007, 06:28 AM I like The Who also !
Scoobiedoo30 03-07-2007, 05:04 PM I have been Fan Of Andy Griffith Show since I first saw it on WGN-9 IN THE 80'S
Zoneboy 03-12-2007, 09:25 PM That's right, I don't watch it. In my humble opinion, Andy Griffith is wayyyyy overrated.
Then why post here and bash the show? You've mentioned more than once how much better Green Acres is than The Andy Griffith Show yet out of your current 290 posts, Not a single one is in the Green Acres forum. If you like the show as much as you claim to, Why not go over there and show your support for it?

Whichever board I decide to post in and why is none of your concern. I was voicing my opinion and making a comparison between two shows. If I have a comment for the Green Acres board, I will post it there when I choose to do so.

I didn't say it was my concern, I was simply asking you a question. If you want to have a civil discussion that's fine but don't throw your smart-aleck comments at me, They'll get you nowhere.
You've also gone to other boards and started negative threads including The Dick Van Dyke show and The Phil Silvers Show/Sgt Bilko. It was my understanding that there was rule against this but evidently it's not being enforced or else those threads and this one would probably have been locked by now.
There's plenty of shows that I don't care for but I don't go to their respective boards and bash them. You're entitled to your own opinion and you also have a right to express it but if you're going to post nothing but negative comments, I'd suggest the General Sitcoms and Discussion forum. I'm sure there's a topic there about least favorite sitcoms.

LOL you are the one who started it by having the audacity to question me. I gave you an appropriate response, you can decipher it any way you want. It has no effect on me whatsoever.
I have made many positive posts, you choose to concentrate on the few negative ones and regardless it's my opinion and within my right to express it where and when I choose and I will continue to do so. There are also negative comments on the boards from other posters. If you don't like em, tough. No one is forcing you to read them. If you don't like them, ignore it and move on.

Yes you have indeed made many positive posts but why lavish praise on Green Acres in the Andy Griffith forum? I'm not trying to tell you where you can and cannot post, I haven't got that right. It's just my personal opinion that if you're going to praise a show that you enjoy that it be done in the appropriate forum.
Mr. Television 03-13-2007, 08:04 PM I know one thing. If you went over to a more active Board just to down a show you'd be bashed a lot more than you are here. It is against the rules to go to a tv Board just to bash. That's what the General Sitcoms section is for.

That's true. The people with the negative comments are just craving attention anyway.

Sorry to disappoint you, I am alive and very well both inside and out.
I stated my opinion here. I was willing to leave it and let it go, but since there are classless individuals here who clearly don't know the meaning of respecting another persons opinion, I am more than happy to drive the point home some more.
The Andy Griffith Show is way overrated. Green Acres is the funnier show, the better show. Even the spinoffs of Andy Griffith are better shows than Andy Griffith itself. Gomer Pyle, USMC and Mayberry RFD are both better than Andy Griffith.
