View Full Version : Why do people keep talking when you say "YOU HAVE THE WRONG NUMBER!!!!!!!!!
TVFactFan 12-28-2006, 11:41 AM Damm, I hate that so much, You answer the phone and then you say-"sorry you have the wrong number, and then they say-"Is this the number...., NO it's not, and sometimes then say something else which causes me to say-"YOU HAVE THE WRONG DAMM NUMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-LOL I know some of you have been in this situation
gilligan fanatic 12-28-2006, 11:43 AM We have an answering machine that says our names. I don't know why people leave messages after it saying Hi to people not on the machine.
Brian Damage 12-28-2006, 11:47 AM Sometimes you get people that say, "Are you sure?" lol
tdf4077 12-28-2006, 11:48 AM We've had these people call the past few months looking for a "Kristie Baker." We have had this phone number for about 5 years now, and we don't know a Kristie Baker (nor do we recognize the people's voices who call), so it's really strange.
Well, anyways, almost everytime someone calls looking for her, we say you have the wrong number, and first they'll repeat the number they dialed. "Yes," I calmly respond, "this is blah blah, but no one by that name lives here." To which most of them respond something like, "Oh. Are you sure?" or "Oh, that's the number I was given."
It actually creeps me out slightly....like, how can they be smart enough to dial the phone when they can't grasp such a simple concept as someone's not here.
swedeace 12-28-2006, 11:49 AM ....because they are probably chatterboxes to begin with.
I get intimidated by total chatterboxes. I am with you. I don't like when they keep talking. Ugh.
What's also annoying is that when some unrecognizable number calls you and leaves a message for some other person. It's, like, didn't they hear the voice/name was different on the voice mail? Geez....
PZelda 12-28-2006, 01:20 PM I get that, too. I've also gotten voicemails from people who were looking for somebody else, plus occasionally people will try to call me - TWICE - and it's a number that I never recognize. So I just ignore it and let my phone ring.
MsOrange 12-28-2006, 01:22 PM One time I had a guy call, and he was trying to sell something.... anyway, he asked for some weird name, and I told him he had the wrong number, and he goes "Uh... ok... well,... let me tell you about this great deal that will help you lower your..." i hung up. Pathetic.
I realize these people have a job to do, but if I say "wrong number" move along. Your obviously not going to be able to convince me to purchase anything. Waste your breath on someone willing to listen.
Ireneparalegal 12-28-2006, 01:23 PM I like how people have been so nice to me when I accidently get the wrong number. I will call someone and I immediately realize when it's the wrong number, I will say, "Oh I am sorry, I got the wrong number." The person on the other end will always be nice and say, "No problem." or "That's ok, it happens." I have never had a person be rude to me. Maybe because I acknowledge the mistake immediately.
Janice 12-28-2006, 01:33 PM I'm very nice to people who call my home by mistake. I ask them what number they dialed. If it's not my number, I'll tell them that. If it is my number, I'll tell them that too.
If I dial a wrong number...to somewhere I usually don't call, like a company or something, I'll recite the number that I meant to dial.
That way, I'm not bothering someone a second time, and vice versa.
Hollow 12-28-2006, 02:40 PM  i get the worst cases of that with random crazy mexicans who call my house at night, i can hardly understand them because they have such strong accents and usually yell at me halfway in spanish.

me: you have the wrong number.
lady: oh! (laughs) yeah, i told her to go with mary and (blabbers on something i can't understand), so is mary there?

AllIWantIsYourClutch 12-28-2006, 02:56 PM This woman called my cell phone once and I told her she had the wrong number and shes like, "Is this Jolly-et?" (Joliet..aka: where I live) I said, "...This is a Joliet number but I'm not the person you're looking for." So she hung up and called right back. I didnt answer and she left a voicemail saying, "I think I have the wrong number, unless you know my daughter Laura."
We get tons of wrong numbers in our dorm room. My (not so) favorite was when a lady called asking for "Mr or Mrs somethingorother." When I told her she had the wrong number, she YELLED at me and was like "THIS IS THE NUMBER I WAS GIVEN SO IF I COULD TALK TO MR somethingorother---" and I said "THIS IS A DORM ROOM" and hung up.

cmcb06 12-28-2006, 03:26 PM That totally irritates me, a few weeks ago this lady called me 4 times. And on the fourth time, I said "Madam you have called me 3 times prior to this, and you have been well informed that you called the wrong number. So please STOP CALLING THIS NUMBER!!!"

That must be the same person who calls me!!!! Being hispanic, I am fluent in speaking spanish, HOWEVER, I won't speak spanish to someone who calls my home and accidently gets the wrong number and they are speaking spanish. I tell them in ENGLISH, "You got the wrong number." I keep repeating it even though they babble with something or ask if so and so lives there. I don't know why I do it, it kinda irks me that they don't understand they got the wrong number.
Brad Russ 12-28-2006, 04:09 PM I honestly believe alot of them are just lonely people, and know that they're dialing a wrong number, but they just do it so they'll have someone to talk to. I actually did that a couple times back in my pathetic days when I had no friends. I may laugh, but I'm being completely serious.
Brieannas21 12-28-2006, 04:09 PM For 2 months there's this one hispanic lady who calls my cell phone just about every other day speaking spanish looking for some man. And I've told her that she has the wrong number over and over and yet she continues to call. I've even had my husband tell her in spanish that she has the wrong number and yet she still calls.

Brieanna, is there something you want to tell me?-LOL You better be having yourself-LOL
Jo_Luvs_Ketchup 12-28-2006, 04:45 PM I never get those people. Actually, at my old house, I had a lot of elderly people call me at 6:00-7:00am because my number was the same as Medicap except for one digit. So a lot of people hit the wrong number. I would usually tell them, you meant to call Medicap, that number is....... Then they apologize for calling so early lol. And if it isn't people calling for medicap, I tell them they have the wrong number then they hang up. I always thought that was rude.
passionsfan79 12-28-2006, 06:02 PM That happend to me yesterday LOL

I agree. That happened to me a few days ago. Someone called me and left a message for someone else. I normally wouldn't think this was strange, but my name is on my voice mail greeting and this person left a message saying my name, and then they said that they were leaving a message for someone else (and said the name of the person). I guess they must have thought I knew they person they were trying to reach.
