Does anyone know why Vinton calls Naomi "Skeeter"? Was it ever mentioned in an episode I haven't seen or may have missed?

I don't think that it was ever revealed why he called her Skeeter. Is that short for mosquito? Was she a blood sucker?:eek:

I thought Skeeter was a blonde nickname.

There was never an explanation, it's just "understood" for the show's sake, lol.

I have the complete Mama's Family dvd set and there are a lot of special features. I watched them all and I don't think that "Skeeter" was ever mentioned. I would like to know too!:D

I was thinking that something WAS mentioned in the reunion clips but I can't remember what was said about this. Seems like it has something to do with someone Ken Berry used to know and he used to call him Skeeter. I'm not positive. I may go back and watch the special features again soon.

Ah, that's right! It is in the DVD features, in the round table reunion. I believe it was a short Army buddy of Ken's, and Ken called him Skeeter.

It's there, it's in one of the round table discussions. If you don't find it or if someone else doesn't post the exact location, I'll try to get to it sometime soon.

I hope someone finds this soon. I KNOW it's on the complete series set's interviews but I somehow missed it when I watched them again.

That explains the origin of where the name came from for the show, but it doesn't explain what the OP asked, which is why/how Vinton the character came up with the name. To that question, there is no answer. Vint just calls her "Skeeter" without any explanation.

Of note- in the episode where Mama tries to make over an amnesiac Naomi, Vint calls her Skeeter and she asks who that is and why he calls her the name. The latter goes unanswered, however. :lol:

I think he did from time to time, but it wasn’t as frequent as in the syndicated version where he just kept on calling her Skeeter just for the sake of it.

I was watching Mama’s Family on Sunday and an episode came on where Vint and Naomi were trying to quit sex, as it was the only way they could have a child. :lol:

I remember that episode. Those banana boxer shorts that she bought for Vint:lol:!

See, Vint does call Naomi Skeeter throughout the NBC version, as proven in the season two episode Obscene Call. I don’t remember exactly when he called her Skeeter, but I think it was sometime when Mama and Aunt Fran were hinting that Naomi’s taste in clothing, her mannerisms, the way she walks, etc., played a part in the calls she was receiving.

The name Skeeter is often used as a nickname for someone who is very active and full of energy and when I watched Mama's Family I believe Vinton often referred to Naomi as Skeeter because it sounded cute and that was his term of endearment for her much in the same way that dear darling or sweetheart are popular terms of endearment that people use today. And it's the same thing as the name sugar is often used to describe someone sweet. But I don't believe Vinton referred to Naomi as Skeeter because of Skeeter Davis
