View Full Version : Do you wear your seat belt?

I always do, even if I'm only driving around the corner. I will admit though, that I didn't start wearing it all the time until I was in my 30s.

What did it for me was Princess Diana's death. Four people in the car, and the only survivor was the only person wearing a seat belt...and he was sitting in the dangerous front passenger seat.

I always wear my seatbelt. It is just habit now. I was like you Janice, when I first started driving, I use to never wear one. However, ever since they made it a law, I never drive without strapping in.

Always have. It just feels weird not having it on, even if the car is just sitting there.

It's true. I give you a lot of credit. You're young, and you know how important it is. I don't know what I was thinking...I wasn't thinking.

Yes.

I cant even get out of the driveway without my daughter yelling- "did you put your seatbelt on?!"

God love her.

Always. My grandma and uncle would be alive today had they been wearing theirs. Something that takes 2 seconds to do can save your life, dont take it for granted.

Always have, always will. I was taught at a young age to always wear it, and now that I drive on my own, that hasn't changed.

Always, though a couple days ago, I was sitting in the back and got lazy and didn't put it on. But I always wear it in the front seats.

I always wear it, but I've got to admit, if I'm in a hurry I sometimes put it on whilest (or just after) pulling away, which I suppose is quite dangerous. I need to try and get out of that habit.

Yes, I do. I didn't when I first started driving, but when the law was passed that you can get a ticket for driving without one, I started using it.

Yep!! Can't even remember the last time I rode in a car without my seat belt. Don't think I ever have actually.

It's the law. :)
Not everywhere. Some states can issue a citation for not wearing it, but can't pull you over for just that...it has to be in conjuction with another offense...i.e. speeding, running a light or whatever.

Massachusetts is that way, unless it's changed. I know there was a bill presented last year to make it a primary offense, but I don't even know if it passed. I wear mine anyway, so I stopped paying attention.

I always wear mine. My dad used to be one that would never wear it, and I would always tell him to put it on. One day he got stopped by a cop and got a ticket for not wearing it. The cop told him that the reason he pulled him over to give him a ticket for not wearing his seatbelt is that the ticket would remind him (and teach him) to put on his seatbelt everyday, and may one day save his life. A few weeks later my dad got into a huge car accident and he was wearing his seatbelt--it saved his life. If he hadn't been wearing it, he wouldn't be alive today.

I always wear a seatbelt.

On the occasional car trip, if I'm tired and want to sleep, I'll lay down and not wear a belt. That happens very rarely though... I did that on Saturday, and I know I won't be sleeping in the car when I go back home tomorrow. That's the only time I don't wear my belt.

I bet I'm going to be one of the worst ones on here....

I don't ever wear it if I'm in the back seat.

I always put it on before even starting the car if I'm in the front UNLESS I'm driving to the end of my apartment complex just to get gas...then I'll wait until I start on the bigger trip.

I said I RARELY do that  Last time was on Saturday. I'll be damned if I can remember the last time before that, because I HATE sleeping in the car.

Always, always, always.....

It's been drilled into me about the safety of seatbelts since I was in elementary school that it feels really weird and awkward not having a seatbelt belted across me. That is the very first thing I do once I am seated in my car. It's just so subconcious for me. I also make sure everyone else is belted in before driving off. There were a couple of times where I was a passenger in someone's car whose seatbelts were not working (mainly my relatives' and friends' cars in Juarez, Mexico). It was scary! I just place the broken seatbelts across me and hold down on it. I was rather apprehensive during the car rides.

I do see that a lot of young kids don't have to wear seatbelts in Mexico (Juarez, San Luis Potosi, and Mexico City). They just sit on an adult's lap if they are really young. I think that car seats are obviously not mandatory in Mexico, but I still think it's rather unsafe.

You have to out here in California--they're very strict about it. Sometimes I do get lazy and not put it on, but I'm getting in the habit of wearing it all the time and buckling up before I even pull out of the driveway.

that is pretty amazing.

i usually forget to unless i'm driving or someone reminds me....or if my dad is driving and he's screaming at us kids and out of control. i'm being serious. he damn near got us killed at least ten times in one car ride last summer when we were in pretty heavy traffic and he was looking at back at me and screaming in my face (saying abusive things that of course started over nothing), not looking at the road, deliberately running red lights, always starting to go off the road before swerving back on, etc.

My boyfriend is a jerk when it comes to wearing his seat belt. He keeps telling me abt the possibililty of being in a crash and the belt coming loose anyways. Or, this is his favorite, what if he were in the car in some canal somewhere and strapped in and he drowns? First of all, we have no canals here that are big enough to swallow a car and they aren't even filled with water...maybe three inches, that's it. HELLLLOOOOOOOO, where do you plan on driving that you will end up in water?????? The only water around us is the ocean and you can't just drive into that!!!!!
We have the Pacific Coast Highway, if you go over that, the rocks will kill you before the water does.

I have worn my seatbelt religiously since 1989 when I happened to put mine on THREE MINUTES BEFORE SLAMMING INTO CAR five blocks from my house. The car in front of me stopped suddenly and I tried to swerve but the traffic on my right didn't allow me to get out of the way in time from hitting the car. I was 8 months pregnant. Even though I wore the seat belt, the force of the impact caused me to shatter the windshield with my head, and my stomach went into the steering wheel (I was driving 35 mph) causing me to go into labor right then and there. I thank God for giving me the sense to wear the seatbelt even though I was only going to the grocery store five minutes from my house. Up until then, I would wear it sometimes...because of what the fireman told me, I now wear it ALL THE TIME. He told me had I not been wearing the seatbelt, I would have been ejected through the windshield. I was lucky to only have my head shatter the windshield. It sounds unlucky, but thinking of being thrown from the car sounds worse to me.

I see your boyfriend suffers from the same "what if" syndrome, that my husband also suffers from, lol. He refuses to wear his seatbelt too. I've yelled, begged...even tried to ask that he start wearing it for my Christmas present. It drives me crazy.
Your story of buckling up reminds me of Barbara Mandrell's story. She and her kids had just put their seatbelts on minutes before a terrible crash, many years ago.
There are rare exceptions to the rule. My sister was in a bad crash years ago. They were actually run off the road by some nut in another car. The car she was in rolled and rolled across the median, and my sister was thrown from the car....she wasn't wearing a seatbelt. Where she was seated, front passenger, was crushed beyond recognition. Even the investigators told her that had she been wearing a seatbelt, it was unlikely that she would have survived the accident. Fortunately, her injuries weren't life threatening...a fractured pelvis, broken arm...banged up. Still, cases like that are very rare. Wearing a seatbelt is always a wise decision.

It's the first thing I do before i turn on the engine. So many deaths could have been prevented if people just two seconds to buckle up.
